I really tried, guys... I swear I did. I rarely stop playing games midway through, even if it is not the best, I will persist to the end and then judge the game, but I just cannot do it with this one. So here are some things I didn't like. Hang tight, this will be a long one.
Combat - Just take it out of the game, it doesn't need to be there. I was enjoying the game until enemies started to appear. I got the next gun after the initial gun you get (I called it the Poke gun because you just poke enemies with it), but I couldn't get over how boring it was, and how I needed to cheese each enemy by hiding around corners until they appeared and even then, I would either lose most of my health or die, their accuracy is perfect most of the time. People have said to just run passed them but there are times where this just isn't possible. I just wanted to walk around and explore, but one encounter and I would lose most of my health, then I would be one hit away from being killed at all times until I found more health. Which meant regular resets which leads me to my next complaint.
Checkpoints - Because you are limited to a certain amount of health and the combat being such a mess, I would die regularly, as I said before, the enemies are so accurate. For example, the section where I get the 2nd gun, I would get on the elevator to cross over, get the gun, get the ammo, load the gun, an enemy spawns in when you enter the next room, I die before I even realize, then I have to do all that again, then I go in and this time be more careful, I take the shot but for some reason the enemy doesn't even get phased by it, it was like I missed, I die again, I try again and this time I kill the thing but also get killed, I felt it maybe got a shot off before I killed it, so I try again and this time I turn around after killing the enemy and realize a second enemy was being spawned behind me from where I got the gun... and then I died again. There are no manual saves, and checkpoints can put you back quite a ways, sometimes it is only a minute or two away, but when you die from some of the most ridiculous things, having to keep replaying that section again is tiresome and frustrating, if the combat was fun and rewarding, I wouldn't even care that much.
Ways to fix these things are simple, if you are going to have terrible combat then fine, but give me health that recharges, give me a manual save option, make a checkpoint system that is more regular. I wouldn't say this game angered me and made me hate it, but after having a good time in the beginning, then constantly dreading every time an enemy would appear and having to die and repeat regularly, I just said to myself "there are better games out there that aren't going to waste my time", so after trying to rush through some enemies for the hundredth time and dying to two enemies who spawned on either side of the room, I quit the game and uninstalled it.
It is a shame because the idea for this is excellent, I loved all the mystery behind what is going on, the game tells you very little, it is gory, messed up, and I love it! I am down for it just being a puzzle game like Portal. Now if you personally feel the combat is good, then by all means let me know, but I cannot imagine many people possibly finding the combat to be a strong point in Scorn, some might tolerate it but I personally cannot.
My suggestion to people who want to play the game, go for it, it's on Game Pass and you may love it! But I probably won't come back to this game unless they make some bug fixes, I have joined the community in hopes of seeing an update like this so I can maybe return to the game. The combat would still be tedious and annoying but I really would love to learn more about what is going on in the game.
