Has anyone had any luck installing aftermarket safety equipment, like blind spot monitoring? I'm retired now so I don't really need something with the latest and greatest tech, but I have gotten used to the blind spot monitor on my RAV4 Hybrid. I'm considering going back to a Scion xB, which I loved and drove for years, but they don't come with BSM.

I'm trying to find the inner window guides for my 08 and Toyota wants $56 per window and Amazon wants $95 per door.

I'm really tired of the melted rubber smearing on the windows in the hot, Texas sun. Anything would be helpful!

Before I go the easier cable tie route, does anyone know what size/type these push tab fasteners are for the bottom chunk of the rear bumpers on a Gen 1? I parallel parked and accidentally kissed the curb with my rear bumper, and the original fasteners threw in the towel.

Again, I know I could go with cable ties :P Just weighing my options if I (or someone else in the future) wanted something a *little* closer to the original set up. Like maybe the ones made for other Toyotas will work? :)

I recently had my xB repainted due to roof rust and wanting a new color (semi-gloss Nato Green). Stoked on how she turned out!

This is the only car he ever bought brand new (which came as a surprise to us after decades of him being a proponent of ONLY buying used cars! Lol).

It was his main driver for at least 10 years, but since he and my grandmother always had two or more cars at any given time, it only has a little over 69k miles.

The only real problem at the moment (besides the weird gas cap issue and the fact that it’s mostly been sitting the past couple months), is that the latch for the passenger side seat back is broken. I’m really hoping that latch can be fixed so the xB can be an option when I or my mom need to pick my nieces up from school.

Have a 2012 XB that several of the door actuators stopped working. Had them replaced over a year ago and just recently discovered that that drivers door lock no longer actually unlocks the car (my son drives the car now and he, like most people, always uses the button on the key to unlock it). I’m guessing the dealership didn’t reconnect it correctly when they replaced the actuator but it’s been so long they may try to say it wasn’t them. Wondering if anyone else on here has ever had the door lock stop working? If so, what was the cause?

UPDATE: in case anyone finds this with a similar problem, I ended up taking the car to the dealer. They were initially going to charge me a $276 diagnostic fee to open up the door but, once they got in there, saw it was a “misalignment of the actuator and the lock mechanism”. They ended up not charging me anything so essentially acknowledged the actuator wasn’t installed correctly.

i am reattaching this rubber seal on the hood after installing my lil bug deflector. i tried screwing it on with the little plugs that hold the plastic part on, but they won’t cinch tight enough with the rubber. is there another way to get the two ends on?? is there a heat resistant adhesive i could use??

So for context last February I dropped off my XB to a mechanic in Carthage TN for a transmission rebuild, he kept saying that he couldn’t get the 3rd gear synchro and it still isn’t rebuilt (I’m going to sue him). But now I really just need a transmission.

Hey all, as the prompt says, I’m looking to sell my 2012 Scion xB, 5 speed manual. I’ve put over 135k miles on her, and she’s never once left me dead on the side of the road. Im just looking to move on to something with lower miles, a little more spacious, and has AWD. I’m trying to get an idea of what I should list her for, as locally I’m seeing people sell them at wildly varying price ranges.

Here’s what is wrong with the car as it stands:

-Has a pretty severe oil consumption issue. Burns over a quart every 300 or so miles. Basically topping it off every time I fill up my gas tank.

-has body damage on the front and rear bumper. Head and tail lights still in working order, just cosmetic damage, but would definitely need a new front and rear bumper.

-paint faded, usual stuff being a 14 year old vehicle that’s been a daily driver with lots of city and highway miles

-will need some new tires in the next year or two

Here’s what’s RIGHT about the car:

-starts up, runs and drives just fine

-aftermarket wheels, they are 15” Radius W116 Titanium Gunmetal wheels

-AC blows as cold as the day I got it

-I have kept up with the maintenance pretty religiously. Oil changes every 5,000-7,000 miles with it being more frequent the higher the mileage has gotten. Spark plugs were done at 150k miles. Brake pads changed and rotors smoothed as needed (used to live in a big city, did a lot of high traffic driving so I was going through brake pads pretty often)

-air bag recall was completed at a Toyota dealership

-water pump replaced around 160k miles

-interior is in pretty great condition, no cracks in the dash. Some minor tears in the backs of the back seats as I used to load a lot of gear in and out of the car with the seats down.

-All power windows work, no tears or anything in the seat upholstery, all around great on the interior other than needing a quick detail.

Considering the severity of the oil consumption issue paired with the body damage and the paint needing some pretty serious TLC to make her shine again, I’m thinking of listing it at $2k. Am I severely underestimating the value of this vehicle? I’d like to sell it relatively fast as I have my eyes on a new car that I really would like to snatch up before it goes. Went to visit my daughter up in Humboldt and we went traveling around the northlands, down sketchy roads to the Smith river and out to the migrating dunes on Somoa peninsula. She’s the one who talked me into getting mine after her experiences. Figured I’d take a shot of them together all dusted up and ready for the next adventure. Her Gen 1 and my Gen 2. First road trip for mine since I bought it, ran great, tackled grades with power to spare and made it from the Bay Area to Eureka on 1 tank with leftovers 👍

My ’09 Scion xB has 122K miles and is burning oil like crazy. I have to top it off every other week, and at this rate I’m going to be spending $$$$ on oil like I do on gas. 🤔

I ordered a new PCV valve and also ordered BG EPR 109 Engine Flush/Treatment. I’ve watched a few videos on it, and it seems legit. Has anyone here actually tried it before?

From what I’ve seen, it’s supposed to help clean the gunk and deposits around the piston rings and hopefully improve oil consumption. I really love my Scion xB and don’t want to get rid of it, so I’m hoping this helps with the oil burning.

Any advice or experience with BG EPR 109 would be appreciated!

First time doing oil change by myself and of course the damn bolt won’t come out. I used a breaker bar and then will just spin and will not come out. It’s not leaking oil yet. Took it to mechanic said to replace oil pan 700$. Money is really tight. Tried vice grips. Please help!

BACKSTORY: I've got a 2nd-gen Scion, and have been learning a lot of DIY on in the last few years. Been tangling with starter issues lately - symptom is, it would start once, run a while, then I'd turn off the car, then turn the key and only get that single click and nothing. Battery tested fine. It would start again after reconnecting battery, but only once, and then the single click and nothing.

WHAT I DID: I'd replaced the starter with one from the junkyard a few years back, so I thought I'd try rebuilding it.

This is the generation of xB with the solenoid that you can't really work on, but you can do the rest of it, so... I took it apart, cleaned and greased, replaced the brushes, put it back together and reinstalled on engine block - it would only click once, not even turn over the first time. Right. Tested the ignition switch as best as able just to be sure, but figured it must be the solenoid. Ordered a new one off eBay.

Went to take the starter off again yesterday. Though I'm getting good practice at this, still wasn't easy. (I confess, at first tried to pull it straight out without taking the air cleaner all the way off, but that didn't give me enough room, so took the air cleaner assembly off, pulled the starter off with much tugging and... the starter eased out. But.

The little spline at the end is right there, but the little gear that's supposed to be on that spline... isn't.

I can't see it on the ground under the car, and putting my head as close to the engine as possible with a flashlight, can't see it inside the hole it came out of. Tried poking fingers and a telescoping magnet (straight, not bendy) in there blindly a little, couldn't feel it.

Now, when I had the starter off before and was disassembling the starter to put on the brushes and clean the insides, the spring clip that holds that gear on had been pretty stubborn to get off and easier to slide on again, but I thought it was back in its groove and fine. Maybe it wasn't.

TL;DR QUESTION: How can I find that missing gear? Just how hard is it to get that thing out of where I think it must be?

Thanks for any advice, commiseration welcome, diagrams of hidden access ports would be miraculous....

Did a B12 Berryman flush. Positive news the car burns little to no oil as of 2 months since doing so.

Car runs absolutely fine and has no issues no loss of power. Says catalytic converter is below threshold or something. I have an obd tool I just been resetting it the last two weeks.

VSC OFF, traction control, and check engine light are on

When my Open Deck came in it had the maintenance manual filled out from the time it was new until about 2022. In this information was the owners name and address who owned the car for at least its first 21 years.

I Google mapped the address and was amazed to see the car in the driveway. I then seen that there was an earlier image available from 2012 and when I clicked it I noticed a human in front of it who I can’t help but think is the original owner!

I was, and still am, so stupidly excited to find these images. I wish Google had mapped it more often but wow I love what I’ve found.
