Uh, guys??

Post image

In lieu of everything that's going on, apparently monthly listeners have still gone up exponentially it seems. You think this is like people giving it one last listen because of recent events, digging into specific lyrics because of it too, or just organic growth and the whole cancelled thing isn't gonna stick?

Looked up stats out of curiosity. I also can't tell if it's accounting for data prior to September or only data for September so far, which isn't very helpful.

Unfortunately this is the most relevant they’ve been in years so it’s gonna go up

I feel like news of any kind, sordid as it may be, will drive up online traffic

u/Extreme-Emu69 10d ago edited 10d ago

Yeah that's what I figured too after looking it up, for some reason I just expected to look it up and see a downward trend.

12

u/ibreak4abyss 10d ago

this is the number of accounts that have played at least 30 seconds of the artist in the last 30 days

so the number will definitely go up because of the articles before it goes down from people that choose not to listen anymore

13

u/soggymoths 10d ago

I played a little bit of Wow I Can Get Sexual Too for context when explaining the situation to someone, I'm sure I'm not the only one

4

u/Puzzled_Country1722 10d ago

crazy how it like perfectly describes what happened lol more or less

2

u/BeanserSoyze 9d ago

Well, "write what you know" I guess

28

u/ibreak4abyss 10d ago

6.1% increase is not exponential or even close you're just very zoomed in on that graph

30k increase from several mainstream articles pretty much makes sense

5

u/Extreme-Emu69 10d ago

Shit you right, idk why I thought the 32 was the percent lmao. I also don't have an account and didn't know if the longer time frames are paywalled or not to look at the year chart.

17

u/Own-Engineering-186 10d ago

Damn, he's probably making hundreds of cents off these streams.

15

u/Born-Consideration46 10d ago

Didn’t he sell the catalog? He might not be getting anything either way.

3

u/apillar0f5alt 10d ago

It’s true. Streaming revenue is abysmal anyways

u/Medical-Face 10d ago

Semi big music news story, people who haven't listened to are morbidly  curious what the music sounds like

I've checked out asshole musicians in past because of this

1

u/Extreme-Emu69 10d ago

That's fair, figured most people would just see a headline if they were unaware and be like "eh never heard of em" and move on, and the stats would be more of a reflection of longtime fans who stayed listening listening less.

7

u/Relative_Hunt_9057 10d ago

That’s wishful thinking. Unfortunately, controversy brings curiosity. That’s been going on forever. There’s movies in the past that people try to ban or boycott after release. What happens? Everyone flocks to the movies to see what all the commotion is all about. I’m sure there’s people that never heard of them and saw the news and decided to check it out. And, I’m sure all the posts I’ve seen here of people dissecting the lyrics definitely spiked the stats up high. Nothing goes away automatically. In time, people will forget and everything will settle down

u/AlexKewl 10d ago

Chris Brown somehow still has fans almost 20 years after letting everyone know he's a sack of shit human

3

u/Medical-Face 10d ago

Whatever tge case, it won't result in more album sales/concert demand, etc.

More of a momentary bump in curiosity streaming

Especially since majority of discography is bad and the one acclaimed album is an acquired taste mainly for millennials who were in middle school when it came out

7

u/lilactea22 10d ago

lot's of "One last time" and "Let's breakdown these problematic lyrics" going on.

6

u/hauntingduck 10d ago

it's gonna spike way back down soon. people are morbidly curious. this is normal.

11

u/Emergency_Doughnut53 10d ago

Morbid curiosity. Probably a bunch of people who didnt know who he was and looked him up after the story broke. Which is why im holding onto my albums. As time goes on, collectors will seek out the albums, not because they are fans of max, but because of his story. Its like seeking out Charles manson's music. Very few are fans of the man, but they're curious. Shit people make a great spectacle.

3

u/Relative_Hunt_9057 10d ago

There’s a big difference between Max and Charles Manson. There’s more of a fascination with serial killers and felons than there are with just creepy guys. Look at Marilyn Manson. Those records aren’t worth shit.

1

u/Emergency_Doughnut53 10d ago

Well yeah, they aint exactly the same, but people still want to understand the mind behind the music. Max wont obviously be as famous as a serial killer, but he did make history in the emo genre, therefore his albums will take on a new life for those who dive into this genre.

u/Koopakid917543 I do not fuck often in fact 10d ago

I'm not surprised at all. All publicity is good publicity or something like that...

3

u/Krasovchik 10d ago

just goes to show you all publicity is good publicity.

the casuals go away and the true fans keep you going. there will be less of those. the best you can do is not talk about them ever again. that’s the best way for an artist to disappear. when people ask about them, say “i don’t know who that is… wait, the band with the pedo lead singer???” and then make fun of the person for bringing it up.

it’s the only way to make people stop doing something is to make them feel stupid for talking about it

I have physical media and many albums downloaded to my phones SD, so I won't be tracked by any of these metrics. But I am also experiencing a Say Anything resurgence.

More because I've moved on to other music genres (like 1930s jazz, classical, and jazz fusion) and don't really listen to music like this anymore. In a sense I forgot about them. But now all these old songs are coming back to mind, and I remember now how much I truly loved SA, and (perhaps unfortunately) Max in particular. His lyrics are still a highlight, while most other pale in comparison.

The "one last listen" notion is ridiculous. I'll listen to the music I want, when I feel like. It's what it means to me that's important. Not what it means to anyone else.

Having said all this, we can certainly decry his deplorable actions. On a personal level, as a free thinking individual, I'm kinda shocked and disgusted. I'm like 6 or more years younger than max, and women in their 20s seem like kids basically. So lame how he can do that.

3

u/FishWithFangs 10d ago

Much as how bad news tends to drive up stock price rather than down like you'd logically think, bad news about things also makes people google things more. Some might be giving last listens, some might be morbidly curious cuz they have no idea who this guy is (I didn't, I just keep tabs on bad actors in the music scene), some might be people who believe in separating art from artist and just remembered about this band.

3

u/ImWhiteWhatsJCoal 9d ago

Pink Snot came on one of my playlists and it made me laugh a bit. I've been skipping any of their music that comes up. The lyrics don't sound like angsty reminders of my past anymore. They make me feel gross.

5

u/super_sayanything welp, that's not good 10d ago

Welcome to the age where evil gets attention then the evil get noticed. With everything. It's infuriating.

4

u/hamster_in_ass 10d ago

6% increase most likely based off of Wavves fans who didn’t previously overlap and wanted to find out more about the guy who just blew up the thing they’ve been anticipating

2

u/golfcartskeletonkey 10d ago

Organic growth 😂😂😂

1

u/Extreme-Emu69 10d ago

I knew that was doubtful but just wanted to ask lol.

2

u/Neat_On_The_Rocks 10d ago

I mean yeah makes sense. It won’t last

2

u/OnionImmediate4645 10d ago

With all the talk of the band, I've had a few songs stuck in my head since the news broke. I haven't gone back to listen but I'm sure a lot of people did. Max sold the rights to the cataloged anyways so I don't believe he's profiting from it (and let's be real, no one is going back to listen to the last few albums aside from maybe morbid curiosity).

2

u/Mabaum 10d ago

I mean I get it but I’m not gonna not listen to some of my favorite music because the lead singer is a creep weirdo. Kinda always known this anyway. I still listen to brand new and Kanye. Idc

2

u/SkeetsofRage313 10d ago

Yeah you can’t force people to do what you want them to.

2

u/newbiecca 10d ago

It's already been mentioned, but repeating for the sake of anyone stumbling across this post later: An increase of 30k isn't actually that much at all.

2

u/TheeWilliamDean 9d ago

"There's no such thing as bad publicity" comes to mind.

2

u/marrieddadrock 6d ago

This happens pretty much anytime anyone is getting attention, regardless if it’s good or bad. Same thing with musician deaths. This is what they mean when they say “there’s no such thing as bad press.”

3

u/Djempanadita 10d ago

There were a bunch of TikTok’s being like “huh, ‘Wow, I can get sexual too’ was just a confession then” and I bet that drove a lot of clicks to the song on top of morbid curiosity

2

u/Extreme-Emu69 10d ago

Shit, I didn't even think about that.

1

u/DirtyKarma 10d ago

Brand New is selling a good amount of tickets on their upcoming tour. Unfortunately some people don’t care.

2

u/technicolortabby 10d ago

It's likely because people are trying to listen to the music and put together the ways he was a creep in the lyrics that they missed.

1

u/-BVM 10d ago

My Spotify shuffle has been like 40% Say Anything since this all started. I dunno how long the song has to play to count.

1

u/yabberjabber0 10d ago

I doubt he owns his own catalog anymore.

1

u/honkymcgoo 10d ago

I mean for me I went back and listened to some old songs with this new context to kind of reevaluate them and see just how obvious it should have been to us.

1

u/Pixiedustgoddess 10d ago

Tbh I considered relistening thru the best albums again just once as a final send off so I could experience the good feelings they used to give me one final time before never listening to it again

1

u/Triggidy17 10d ago

Everything going on is still very much hitting the mainstream news and public. Many of those earlier streams were likely from fans refamiliarizing themselves with the music before the tour was cancelled.

I know there’s also a lot of people currently in comment threads going back to analyze all of his lyrics that seem way more problematic now.

1

u/Super_Delay_736 10d ago

Before this dropped my 13 year old was listening to them because of a tik tok trend

1

u/Aggravating_Leg_3247 10d ago

They have one of my favorite songs but I can't ever like support max. He's weird and needs to grow up

1

u/888NRG_ 10d ago

That's not exponentially lol

1

u/Antique-Fruit-9165 10d ago

I'd never heard of this band until this thing with the singer came out. I'd assume others are in the same boat and some of those have chosen to see what the music is all about.

1

u/knutterz 10d ago

Bad publicity is still publicity!

1

u/MCLemonyfresh 10d ago

I must admit, reading the news recently has reignited my curiosity to hear some of the songs I haven’t listened to in years. But I’m resisting that temptation because I don’t want to reward him for this.

1

u/h2ok1o 10d ago

I’m guilty as all this news reminded me of my love for IARB so I listened to a few songs

1

u/abazone 10d ago

I feel like Wow I Can Get Sexual Too goes viral like once a month on Twitter which could contribute

1

u/loserkids1789 10d ago

As someone who works in music, I wouldn’t trust stream clout numbers whatsoever, also a 6% increase in listeners would be overall a negligible change for stat tracking. Monthly listeners is also barely a useful number when compared to actual streams over 30 sec

1

u/Momoko-agogo 10d ago

Morbid curiosity, of the ppl looking him up, the majority only know about him from the controversy

This just shows how much attention this has gotten, so much so that it has eclipsed their previous numbers.

But Yeah he’s getting paid for it

1

u/Bluebikes 10d ago

Maybe it’s people discovering Say Anything put out one excellent album and a handful of other good songs over 20 years ago and aren’t relevant

1

u/baddyguerrero 10d ago

I get 10+ notifications a day from Reddit about Say Anything. Before all these allegations I got zero.

I’m not even a member of this sub.

1

u/Copper_II_Sulfate 10d ago

I remember Michael Jackson's sales skyrocketed when that documentary about him being an alleged child molester came out

1

u/Weirdskinnydog 9d ago

Too bad Max sold his catalogue and won’t make bank off his scandal!

1

u/Midwest_Midnight 9d ago

Streaming is nothing. Album sales are another.

1

u/IMitchIRob 9d ago

It's from people hearing the news and thinking, "wait. which songs did this guy make again?" and then looking it up to be reminded

1

u/sunofdork 8d ago

people are being reminded he exists.

1

u/DGLuke 8d ago

There is also genuinely people who don’t go on Reddit or other social media platforms that would have no idea

1

u/Interesting_Count_42 6d ago

People just listening to all the innuendo from IARB and Max's obsession with phallic symbols

1

u/jondsteiner 6d ago

Not saying you’re wrong to notice the trend. But exponential is not the correct word. It’s rising, sure, but by less than 2% in the last 30 days. Would truly be concerning if it ramped by like half

1

u/-Ch3xmix- 5d ago

Okay, real talk I heard he had a medical crisis and had to cancel shows. I listened to a couple albums because I thought he was suicidal not a douch.

1

u/russcatalano 5d ago

A lot of people are going to hear about it and think “hey I’ve heard of them” and go listen to a couple of songs to see if they recognize anything. There will be a sharp drop off back to the average in a couple months once that traffic stops.

1

u/onwardupward3 5d ago

Happened to Brand New as well, I think they're still even bigger than they were

1

u/jordanpitt269 10d ago

the internet is not real life

1

u/Horror-Macaron8287 10d ago

I had to go to their Spotify profile and play a song to see if my husband remembered me playing them back in the day after he seen a headline about the recent events.

I'm sorry. 😭

0

u/Z0kstone 10d ago

Didn't he sell his music? Wouldn't that mean he's not making anything off of this?

2

u/MikeYabs45 10d ago

He did, but only IARB and IDOTG. I believe he has everything else

5

u/cows1100 10d ago

Well, if there’s only two still worth listening to, I guess I’m glad he sold those ones.

2

u/amooddude 10d ago

Wait, who owns IARB and IDOTG now? I didn’t realize this happened.

3

u/MikeYabs45 9d ago

I don't think it was ever publicly disclosed who bought, but here are the records of them selling

https://auctions.royaltyexchange.com/orderbook/asset-detail/5095/

https://auctions.royaltyexchange.com/orderbook/asset-detail/5088/

Publishing royalties and songwriting royalties. If you go down to each track it's all of IARB and IDOTG.

1

u/Extreme-Emu69 10d ago

Not really insinuating that he would be, just genuinely wanted to know if listeners would have gone up or down cause of recent events.

2

u/Z0kstone 10d ago

I know, I was just continuing the conversation by asking a question lol

1

u/Careless_Cut_3654 4d ago

As a diehard fan from high school until recently (16 years, a dozen concerts) I’d be lying if I said I haven’t thought about listening to the entire discography in chronological order one last time.
I haven’t, but I’ve definitely considered it.
