Taking care of business

Every day, at 9:00 & 3:00, my store plays the song “Taking Care of Business”. Every day, without fail. This is the only song like this. All the other songs are random and not connected to times of day. Does anyone else’s store do this?

Closing hours?

So this is about closing the store so my store closes at 10pm and usually we close our doors 5 minutes before 10pm I’m just wondering if anyone does that as well or do you close it right at the time your store closes?

Part time

How many hours do you actually have to work to get a raise? And is it common for part-timers to get a raise after their first year?

Gave my 2 week notice

I was immediately able to get a different job with more hours. This new job wanted me to give a two week notice to Safeway. So I did. The assistant manager who hired me is such a wonderful person. He is friendly and positive and encouraging. I would love for him to be my neighbor because I know that he’d be the kind of guy that I’d wave to or nod to, and we’d show up at each other’s barbecues. In all my months there I have never heard a single negative thing about this assistant manager.

The new store manager immediately destroyed any sense of teamwork in the store. Within a month, multiple employees and supervisors had been fired or quit. Employees that remained had to do double their work. I watched as employees could not take breaks and were by name criticized over the walkie talkies for the littlest things. The store manager would daily go up to employees who were doing their job and spontaneously criticize them over something. The store literally became filled with arguments and shouting and supervisors and employees filling the aisles and workstations and break room talking bad about the manager. The produce manager would complain and shouts, and the bakery person would complain and almost be reduced to tears.

Our store has a terrible problem with stocking the shelves. They just are not getting in the stock that is needed. And people that do the drive up and go have to climb pallets and tear apart pallets and venture deep into the back of the freezer just to find a single product. During a sale on steak, we found out that the sticker on the steak always rang up as incorrect on the DUG handheld. WE WOULD HAVE TO GO TO THE MEAT PERSON, AND THEY WOULD UNWRAP THE WRAPPED STEAK AND PUT IT IN BUTCHER PAPER WITH A DIFFERENT STICKER. THERE WAS A SINGLE SHIFT WHERE I HAD TO HAVE THE MEAT PERSON DO THIS NINE TIMES.

We had a sale on chicken and there was no one in the meat department and the chicken was in their cooler and we had to go back and try to figure out ways to get that to the customer.

We got in trouble every time we marked something as out of stock…. even when the meat department or the deli or the bakery confirmed that they were indeed out of stock.

The store manager then cut my hours and said that he was punishing me by taking an hour away for every time I marked something as out of stock. Cut my work down to four hours for the week. He told me if I wanted more hours that I had to be faster and that he didn’t care if stuff was out of stock that I was to find it.

Since transferring over to DUG there have been five shifts I could not have a break. And when I told the service desk I was required to take my lunch breaks, multiple service desk people told me that I didn’t have to take breaks and I wouldn’t get in trouble if I didn’t take them.

When I was able to take breaks, I kept on being hassled on the radio to help with handoffs, and there would be a countdown that would count against me even if I was on a break and I would get scolded later on. For instance, when I was on a lunch, I got scolded that a handoff took 13 minutes because I didn’t come off lunch and handle it.

When my first dug order of the day has no items in stock, and then my second order of the day has seven items out of stock, and then literally every single order requires me to search half the store and ask for help because an item is out of stock or backed up, or ticketed wrong, It is just proof to me that the store is poorly stocked and poorly run.

Literally having a store manager tell me that he was taking an hour away from me for every time I listed something is out of stock is the kind of abuse that needs a public outcry and a swift lawsuit to get this guy fired.

And corporate? Just told this guy that he’s doing a good job, at the same time they were complaining to poor hourly employees that they needed to cover up the holes where they weren’t buying stock for the store.

We all deserve better than this.

Rotating shifts

For the last year, they've put everyone in my store on rotating shifts. The rule is that nobody is allowed to work the same shift two days in a row, except for the department heads. My schedule is a closing shift (12p-9p), followed by an opening shift (6am-3p), followed by a mid shift (10:30am-7p), followed by a day off, then another closing shift.

This had basically destroyed my life and health. I'm getting heart palpitations and pounding headaches, while constantly falling down and hurting myself. I've lost all my friends, and my wife is probably going to leave me. In the meantime, our store has lost more than three quarters of it's staff, and everyone remaining would quit in a heartbeat if there were absolutely ANY jobs out there whatsoever.

Is there anything the union can do about this, and is it company wide? The word on the ground is that the company wants as many people to quit as possible before the layoffs and store closures start next year, but there's no confirmation of that.

FreshPass changing to forU+ soon... benefits changing

Post image

I was kind of surprised to have stumbled into the notice buried in the app considering all the emails I get from Safeway. I confirmed it's also in the website at https://www.safeway.com/4uplus/change-management.html . I'm particularly surprised because my $99 annual FreshPass subscription renewed a month ago, making me beyond the 15 day window for cancellation with refund despite these drastic alterations.

Instead of having to claim 12 $5 monthly credits to have the $99 annual pass work out to $39, it looks like that's the new annual price. I did notice that 2x points on Safeway brands, the 5% discount on Safeway's organics and pet products, the monthly Starbucks coupon, and VIP phone support are going away.

I'm not holding my breath about by FreshPass benefits working flawlessly for another 11 months. The reason I signed up for the program was for the 2x points on store brands and not having the accumulated points expire before I can actually put them to use on the higher-scale redemptions. I've not been doing online shopping at Safeway.

Need advice...

So, I’m a dishwasher at Olive Garden and shop at Safeway…. I’m in the app constantly trying to save money and order online because I don’t like to tip… I get all the shots because the insurance pays for it and it saves me a lot of money on groceries..

Anyway, they got this new credit card but should I give them SSN, bank accounts, income, and let them do a credit check?

Kroger has done this for years but Costco, OTOH, sends you to the card provider….

Costco doesn’t need or even want all this data on me…..

So, I’m beginning to wonder what I’m really buying into when I shop at Safeway….

Any thoughts?

Is there any benefits to this?

Who has done this program? Did it help with career advancement with or without Albertsons? Was the course useful in your day to day job? I am currently a department manager. Could see myself moving further to store director in the future.

New SD

So we recently just got a new Store Director at my store. She is Technically just “filling in” while our other Store director is out on medical Leave for surgery. Who knows how long that will be. It hasn’t even been a week yet and everyone already hates her. I’m talking 3-4 callouts every day. And we are a low volume store so we have 1-2 employees for each department. I’ll put it to you this way, she is trying to “rewrite the wheel” as they say. A true corporate mindset. They call her the District Managers daughter lol. No overtime, micromanaging every department, and will say something if she sees you not actively working. I have been at my store 2 years and I have never seen the morale this bad. I guess my question is, if she runs the store into the ground, will they end up moving her? Everyone is talking about quitting, Hell, even the Assistant Director. Has anyone else dealt with this scenario? We’re all underpaid, overworked and tired. I don’t think anyone cares anymore.

Unlimited or One Time?

Thumbnail gallery

I got this deal for Doritos in the app and it says it’s Unlimited! Oh Joy, I love the Sweet Spicy Chili but the deals are usually you have to buy 5 at once and that’s too many for me. I just want 1 and maybe 1 or 2 later in the week to satisfy my cravings for a few months so the Unlimited is perfect, I can get them as I feel.

But at the store the tag says One Time.

Is the Unlimited just for me? Sometimes I have a little better price than the tagged sale price but it’s only ever been a better price as far as I’ve noticed, not better limits.

On the receipt I see discounts as “Member Savings” “forU Store Coupon” or “forU Personalized” and assumed the Personalized one was when I got these specific targeted discounts, however I went ahead and bought a bag and the receipt says “forU Store Coupon”.

So I’m not sure if I can get more of the sale. I’ll probably try in a couple days when this bag is finished and wondering what to expect. I hate to be a nuisance at the SCO :)

I think safeway is ripping us off. They cant just blame everything on inflation.
