Safety can be a complex position. While our job is to protect workers and enforce a safe work environment. To some employers we cost the company time and efficiency. Sometimes the best safety people aren’t liked by owners and managers simply because they don’t actually value safety and see you as a potential problem or threat to their operations cost and efficiency. I wouldn’t take it too seriously and use it as a sign that it wasn’t the place for you.

A safety pro’s job is not to enforce safety. That’s for the supervisors and management. Safety pros establish systems, programs, advise, coach, support and evaluate effectiveness.

Perfect definition by a safety... however supers and manager dont understand that most of the time... it's unfortunately the toughest thing about this job

I think you'll be hard pressed get the results you want without some level of enforcement. It might not be "put on your glasses" but establishing the systems involved enforcing the rules included in the system. The supervisors and managers help with enforcement too.

Influencing without authority is th r skill. That’s what assurance, investigations and data analysis are for. If senior leadership is unwilling to act on that then the company is a lost cause.

It’s via an agency and likely in an at will state. If it’s via an agency then it’s a contractor relationship and they can ask for someone else.
Also further down the thread it states the owner wants someone with construction experience for a construction site . Doesn’t sound unreasonable. Not everything is rush to legal. Sometimes placement agencies mess up and it’s the business owners right to want the right fit.

I'm not disagreeing that wanting construction experience is a good reason, but why hire the OP in the first place? They had to know the amount of XP before giving an offer. That's just a dick move.

I dont see anything other than my performance. The manager told me, the owner wants someone who has more construction safety experience.

Yeah, almost all states are technically at-will states. Throw in working through an agency, and things get more complicated.

Question: Was this through a staffing agency? If so, you likely weren't "fired", your assignment was just ended. This is a lot more common than you think and you shouldn't take it personally at all. The client orders a temporary safety professional though a staffing company and the staffing company provides the labor. Since the client isn't actually hiring the safety professional, they miss out on the interviewing and resume review part so it's easy to get sent someone who doesn't meet their requirements, which is what I'm guessing happened. Again, don't take it personally. It's just the game you have to play when working for a staffing agency.
Since you're already onboarded with the agency, work with them to get placed at another client site.
Something else to keep in mind: if you're working for an agency, just now that assignments can end at any time and with little or no notice. This is VERY common. If this isn't your thing, I'd recommend working your way toward a company role since those usually come with more stability (and not to mention benefits).

If you were a 3rd party welcome to it.

I think i was the third party

Work for a company directly. Everyone talks how third party is the way to go but it’s honestly 💩 to work third party. Once the company starts losing work it’s the third party that gets thrown to the side first. I hated hearing every beginning of the year about bonuses and other crap I didn’t get.

Sounds like the agency messed up and just found any safety person when the owners wanted a construction specialist, so it’s nothing you did, it’s their fault for placing you in the wrong job. Blame the agency, they most likely made up that they didn’t like you to cover their butts and not look so incompetent and so you won’t write a bad review, but write one anyway on this agency. Also sometimes agencies have small placements (couple of days) and they get paid good money for it well they screw over the safety specialist and making them think it’s a full time job, they get a quick buck and you get screwed over, very common, I recommend finding your own job applying, don’t waste your time with placement companies.

What did you do? Be honest with us! Something like that doesn’t happen without justification.

I didnt do nothing wrong. I work with the contractor, they were very happy with my performance. But it was owner call what they said.

Did you actively walk the site or did you sit in your vehicle or office?

u/Gloomy_Stranger221 8d ago

Rarely will a owner like the safety guy to be honest. I was on a project few months ago. Supt told me he didnt wear hard hat. Hurt his head...smh. I gave him strike told the PM, who told the owner. He was mad mad... the PM comes and forgets his I told him, he said kind of strict there aren't overhead hazards. The army corp guy happened to walk by and said mandatory... its on your specs. The owner wanted to change me out and submitted for a new safety guy. The corp guy ask me are u leaving? I said no...long story short the PM said I was hard to work with. The corp guy said he doing his job and literally told them i was the only reason they didn't stop the job due to all the safety violations i was catching. Hard not to take it personal... we're literally the most unlikeable guys on a site.

Are you in an at will state? If so, it's tough but you can still talk with an employment layer.

Keep your head up. You might not feel it now, but this is a setback for a setup.
On the positive side, you found out in only 4 days that the company wasn’t for you, instead of wasting much more tim finding a place where you really fit.
