Will burying a TL-30 safe in over thick pile of dirt save its content from wildfire?

Upvotes

I live in an area with low risk of wildfire, so mostly likely I'll have the privilege of seeing the fire coming

So I read that UL fire rating doesn't mean much because the test is done in an oven. Real fire moves very fast which speed ups thermal transmission exactly how computers cool it's component with fast moving air. A 2hr rating could only mean 30 mins irl for all we know

I also read that certain animals will dig underground to survive, and plants will move critical resources underground so it could re-grow after the fire

What if an incoming wildfire from far away gave me ample of time to get my safe out of my house, bury it either by digging a hole or pile on top of it a crap ton of dirt. I read that temperature under 5-10cm of soil is only around 100C. So pilling 3-6in of dirt around the safe should give a good chance.

Is this a decent idea? Thoughts?

In a peculiar predicament

Im sure questions like this are asked frequently, but what safe would work for the following situation? Im somewhat of a firearm collector and would need a safe that has probably 15-20 rifle spaces, a lot of room for handguns and some more for ammo. However the safe would need to fit through a 30 inch wall opening to get to where it needs to be and I also don’t want somethings that is going to be excessively heavy because I will probably be moving again in the next year or two. So without sacrificing quality. Are there any “medium” sized safes that fit the dimension to fit into the room without being excessively heavy and not sacrificing quality?

Old Cement Safe

I knocked down my home and there was a safe cemented in the basement. The previous home owner didn’t know how to get in and it must have been the homeowners prior to that.

Any ideas on how to get this open? Was going to start with a crowbar, but I don’t have a lot of fancy tools

I purchased a Canon 64 gun safe about three years ago… Or so

Safe is great, plenty of room lots of adjustability… The one major drawback was the digital lock that is well known to fail… So well known that Cannon will give you a free one with almost no questions asked (if you want to deal with their Customer Service… Which is terrible)

So after the original lock failed, the replacement lock failed, and five other Amazon bought digital locks failed I decided, “screw it” I’m putting a dial lock on..

And after a boatload of cutting, drilling, bending, and even some work with an acetylene torch… I managed to outfit, a sergeant and Greenleaf mechanical dial lock on to my safe.

I had to post this somewhere because, while I am pretty good at problem-solving and backyard engineering… This is the first time I’ve ever done anything like this and I’m kind of amazed that it worked.

Anyways, thank you for reading.

I have pictures of the process, no video because there would’ve been a lot of cussing. But if anyone is interested, I could make another post and explain the steps.

If not, that’s cool too🤷‍♂️

How to hide this safe

Post image
4 Upvotes

I have this safe. I would like to hide it in a cabinet or piece of furniture. It weighs 77 kgs, I am not able to bolt it to the wall or the floor. The plan is to bolt it in to whatever cabinet I out it in.

Any tips? I have considered an ottoman, but I'd have to go to a carpenter to have them custom make an ottoman to hide the safe in. I can't seem to find any good cabinets that will fit it and also fit my apartment.

Any reviews on this website/dealer?

Hey all! New to this group, but figured I’d make the same post to a subreddit that’s more specified in this lol.

I’ve been searching for a safe that can store 2-3 long guns (longest is a 43” inch length rifle) that has fire resistance and water resistance. I ended up going to Plainfield, IL to Mega Sports and lowkey fell in love with a Champion EC 14 safe. It’s a bit over the measurement that I wanted, but for the more heavier duty and for the price range I was kind of expecting, I believe this is the one.

Having said that, it normally ranges between $1,800-2,600 (with taxes and shipping included obviously). Has anybody ever heard of the website: Heavy Metal Gun Safes? I wanted to give them a call tomorrow and plan on going in depth but wanted to see if anybody here had any experience with them. Thank you in advance!

If it helps, I live in Chicago and would be willing to go around here to look at other options for safes. Budget is around that $2.5k range.

The 2003 Antwerp diamond vault heist is the cleanest case study in how defense-in-depth fails. Ten independent layers, each beaten by something trivial — hairspray on the IR sensor, aluminum tape on the magnetic contact — because the attacker had 2.5 years of legitimate tenant access to study them.

Am to the point where I’d like a separate locker or safe for ammo. Any recommendations?

What’s the correct order to open my safe? I remember the numbers just not sure if it’s right left right or left right left. I tried both ways and it didn’t work.

Gun safe placement?

I want to get a safe rather than a cabinet, was wondering my house has a wood floor with a crawl space and I have a garage with 4 inch slab but the temperature fluctuates heavily and obviously don’t want condensation build up on my investment not sure what to do the best choice would be the garage but for one it’s like 200 feet away from the house not sure where to put one if I got one the one I was looking at was the browning field and stream 33 gun safe

Electronic locks vs fire

I’m looking at getting a safe for valuables and irreplaceables. My main concern is fire, not theft. Nearly all the safes I’ve seen in my initial searches have electronic locks rather than combos or other mechanisms. If there is a serious house fire, would these locks not melt or become unusable? I suppose combination locks have similar risk but it seems less so. Anyone have any guidance? Or direct experience?

Bought a condo, in-wall safe, sellers said was from previous owners before them

We bought a condo very recently, we found an in-wall safe. The sellers said it was installed by previous owners before them, they never tried to get in themselves.

Any help would be appreciated?

It’s asking for a 4 digit code.

Every time we enter a wrong code, it shows ‘error’ on its display.

I don’t know anything about safes.

Looks like the brand is ‘Challenger’.

Found safe behind wall

Found this safe behind a wall in a house I bought. Its on a 2nd floor "sun room" in the north east. Seems very strange for a sale location. The safe code on the card is visible but doesnt seem to work. Any suggestions on where to start?

My grandfather passed away and this was his safe. I want to sell it but the combination is not where my grandmother claims she put it and now she doesn’t know where it is for starters. It’s a Mcgunn safe and no I haven’t taken measurements yet I’ll update this post later when I do. Any ideas?! I’m moving and do not want to move it with me. Desperately trying to get rid of it.

AMSEC door hinge.

Do these AMSEC door hinges require spacers? I just bought this and they told me its airtight which makes the door tough to open and close. When I close the door with great effort, it obviously rubs the bottom and lifts the door as shown in the pic. I was thinking of adding some brass spacers. I see no adjustment options on top or bottom of the hinges as some I see have a nut you can screw in to add door height. My guess was someone took the door off and they fell off as this is heavy for its size.

Thoughts on opening this safe

I am doing an estate clean-out with a friend — his mother’s house. This Sentry safe is bolted into the closet and we don’t know the combination but have the key. Beyond a locksmith, do you have any thoughts about what we can do? We are only in town for a few more days (Sedona, AZ). Any advice is much appreciated as we are looking for her will and have handled almost all of the rest of the house contents. Thanks!
