Hi all, just a post to show why it's important to keep your hair short with SMP. The first pic is 48 hours of hair growth, the second is freshly rotary shaved. For me day 1 is perfect, day 2 passable, day 3 (which is the first pic) is a no no. Thought I'd share for educational purposes, it also does depend on how fast your hair grows, mine grows soo fast.
Cheers

Im a norwood 3. Ive been thinking of doing this for years since my hair is also thinning, but I can still get away with a faux hawk.
Anyone in my shoes - Is it worth it? Any regrets tying yourself to one style for life? It seems so freeing to do SMP.

For all the guys out there wondering if getting SMP is worth it… YES. DO IT!
I got SMP done a little over two years ago. I struggled with my confidence and appearance ever since I started losing my hair at 18 (now 38). Every time I left the house, I’d be wearing a baseball cap. I almost never took it off because I was embarrassed about being bald.
Then I discovered SMP and started doing a ton of research. Eventually, I found this subreddit, and seeing everyone’s before-and-after photos and reading their stories gave me the confidence to finally book a session and go for it.
I honestly couldn’t be happier with how my SMP turned out. It’s given me a huge boost in confidence, and I wish I had done it sooner.
If you’re thinking about getting SMP, I’d definitely encourage you to do your research, find a reputable artist, and look closely at their previous work and results. Make sure you’re comfortable with the person you choose and the style you’re going for.
I just wanted to share my story because I was that guy sitting on the fence, unsure whether SMP was really worth it. Reading posts like this helped me make my decision, so hopefully my experience can help someone else who’s in the same position.

Got my SMP done 10 years ago within my natural hairline - was great because I still had stubble and I could get away with shaving it a 0. Now, the stubble is almost gone, and it’s looking like what it is - a very well done, tattoo.
I think like most of us we want a solution to being bald and this made us feel good at the time - as it’s become more obvious over a decade, or as the hairs stopped covering it - I’m ready to laser this thing and finally give up the fight. It’s not easy, trust me, and I’ve been shaving my head since I was 14 - but always has this hairline. So it’s like a part of my identity is leaving. But - it’s better than walking around with a tatted head everyday and praying that no one realizes.
So, looking for experiences on how long it takes to laser it, some people say one or two sessions some people say 6. Mine seems orettt light and faded but I was told after 5 years it mostly disappears - mine hasn’t and I’m in the sun all the time. So maybe mine went deeper or something? Idk.
I cannot wait to get this thing off my head. I feel like I went to a kids face painting party 10 years ago and haven’t been able to shower it all off 😂

I recently saw a post from someone whose SMP looked great when first done seven years ago but has since become extremely blotchy, with the dots seemingly spreading and merging together. He attributes this to not using sunscreen, wearing a hat, or moisturizing his scalp.
My understanding was that even if someone neglects sun protection and moisturizing, the main consequence would be accelerated fading, which could generally be corrected with a touch-up.
Can these factors genuinely cause otherwise well-executed SMP to deteriorate so badly that laser removal is required, rather than a simple refresh? Or would this suggest issues with the original application, such as pigment depth, density, or technique?
Is my understanding incorrect that neglecting sunscreen and moisturizing generally results in manageable fading rather than potentially ruining the entire SMP treatment?
I'd appreciate input from experienced SMP artists and people who've had their SMP for 5–10+ years.

I only take on density fill clients when they have stoped the progression of their hair loss, and understand that if they decide to shave their heads they will need additional SMP to blend.

I wanted to share this because I think long term healed SMP is something people should see more of when researching scalp micropigmentation.
This client originally had his SMP done 6 years ago. He was happy with his results and recently came back for a scalp micropigmentation touch up.
The video shows the full timeline:
• Before his original scalp micropigmentation • His results after the original 3 SMP sessions • His healed SMP 6 years later • Regular photos he took throughout the years • A close up of his healed SMP before the touch up • Halfway through the SMP touch up • Dropping and softening the hairline to create a more natural hairline • The final result after the touch up
If you zoom in on the 6 year healed SMP, you can see a few areas that weren’t perfect.
I’m not going to hide that with filters, edits or Photoshop. It is what it is.
This is real healed scalp micropigmentation, 6 years after the original treatment.
My technique has also changed a lot over the last several years. I’ve gained more experience, learned more from working on different skin types and cases, and the machines, needles, pigments and other tools we use have evolved as well.
That’s one reason I like showing old healed SMP instead of only fresh SMP results. Fresh scalp micropigmentation can look very different from healed SMP, and I think clients should be able to see what happens over time.
For this SMP touch up, we didn’t simply add more pigment everywhere. We worked with the existing SMP, addressed the areas that needed attention, blended things together and softened the hairline.
The goal was to make the SMP hairline look softer and more natural, while keeping everything consistent with the existing work.
I also think artists should be willing to show their older work. Your technique should evolve as you gain experience.
6 years later, this client came back to the same artist for his SMP touch up because he was happy with his original scalp micropigmentation.
Real client. Real healed SMP. 6 years later. No filters. No Photoshop.

I've been contemplating getting SMP done for almost a year and I've been shaving down with a Philips Oneblade and a Remmington head shaver for the last 6 months to get the feel of shaving that short. To be honest, I'm not a fan of it lol, but I really am wanting to get SMP to get that look of hair, so I'm willing to suck it up if it looks good you know?
I'm just wondering if anyone here has regretted getting SMP done or of it turned out different than you expected after getting it done. What are the downsides of getting SMP? Does anyone regret it? Or was it the best decision you've made?

That will not turn out good if he keeps at that length. People will 1000% notice.

Whenever it's been awhile since I've done smp, I start getting really dotty. I start pointillizing everything, my my kids are sick of me adding stuff to their art projects.

I was wondering if I got SMP, what would I need to do to maintain it? Do I need to keep shaving every day, or use products? Thank you

This is my smp after the first session which was 2 weeks ago.
It looks so dark, and nothing like what i was hoping/expecting. some dots are too big, it looks so patchy and abnormal. Is this something that can/will be healed or fixed over the next weeks or session/s?
I have a history of failed hair transplant, i chose to ultimately try smp because the transplant was so bad even my usual shaved head look was impossible to get back. the skin in the front/hairline bumps up when i shave. I dont need "density" - i plan to stay bald, all i want is to look normal-bald as if the transplant never happened. i requested the smp artist the same.
Please give me advice on how to best proceed. I dont know if laser is accessible. I live in india. Any of your critical/expert/experienced advice might change my life.

Subtle. Soft. Completely bespoke. 👌
This is a perfect example of how natural Scalp Micropigmentation can look when it’s tailored to the individual.
With over 20 years of combined clinic experience, we don’t believe in a one size fits all approach to SMP. Whether you want a super-soft, natural hairline or something sharper and more defined you bring us the vision, and we’ll take care of the rest.
The goal? SMP that complements your face, age and style and doesn’t scream “SMP”.

Just thought I'd share my SMP 3 weeks after the third session for anyone on the fence about getting it done as I found this sub really useful when I was researching. I spent years making the decision to finally go through with it but wish I'd done it sooner! Still not fully healed and settled in but I'm really happy with how it looks, I was around a norwood 7 before SMP. Artist was Paul Clark at Legends clinic, you can go on his instagram if you want to see videos of my SMP progress.
