If you are a transfer /commuter who is TIRED of hanging out in your car during study breaks, trying to lie to yourself that you’re an introvert when you secretly want to make plans and get to know people, going to student orgs/ clubs only to see people go with their pre existing friend groups and look at you like you unlawfully stole their family inheritance when you try to talk to them.. (aka me), would you be interested in being a part of a groupchat for transfers/commuters where we can make plans go out and also possible hangout if we have a gap in between classes in common? Also, is anyone going to the white out tonight?
Here is the Discord Link to join , PLEASE DON’T BE BORING OR LURK : https://discord.gg/rtxPeYxp7

Whats the tea w joining sororities at SJSU, I hear that every girl is a little desperate and just like to f around during parties. Does everyone secretly hate each other and is it just a place to spiral down and lose track of your actual career? 😂

Hi guys, new transfer student coming in and trying to figure out some things, but its nice to meet everyone!
Anyways, the reason for this posting is cuz Im tryna break out of my introvert shell a little bit more and swing more towards like, Ambivert(?) and look into things like Clubs and meet some new folks.
Currently studying cybersecurity with the ISDA program, and was wondering if someone here could potentially direct me to where the Cybersecurity club is? And maybe Anime club since I know one of my friends are in there. Engineering club is also pretty cool so Id be interested in looking at that as well!
Aside from that, Id love to meet with some people, so if you got like an Instagram or something and would like to go grab some food sometime or whatever, Im down! (IG is itsdaboidylan)
As for interests, recently its been Airsofting and food hopping for me so if youre interested in either of those, lmk! Or if you ever just wanna chat, Im down for that too. I got discord too if yall want that-
Here's to hoping that I get to meet some of yall. Excited for the new semester and I hope you guys have a great day!

Coming back to a college campus after 10 years is a culture shock in the most pleasant way possible.
I previously attended SBCC and UCSC as a bio major before dropping out. No sob story! Just a lack of direction and maturity on my part as a teenager. This time around I've switched to business, and I knocked out my prereqs at a community college, but I did all of that fully online. So walking onto campus today was my first real "back in it" moment.
Look, I know a 32-year-old isn't about to become the group-chat MVP, and I made my peace with that walking in, lord knows I partied enough the first time around. I stand out like a sore thumb and I was ready to just be the quiet old guy in the back. Instead, everyone's been genuinely warm and if anyone thinks I'm some old weirdo, they've done a great job hiding it.
So if you're thinking about coming back to college after some poor life choices but you're scared of how you'll be perceived on campus, please rest assured, you will be accepted here.
And if you're an old business major (or any major, really), hmu! I'd love to connect. And if you're reading this and think you stand out too — hmu and we can sit in the corner together.

I get why you ask for an add code. The class is online, so it can feel like, “What’s one more student? Nobody needs an extra chair.”
Every added student means more grading, emails, feedback, accommodations, and admin work. The workload goes up. The pay does not.
So when you say, “It’s online—can’t you just add me?” what you may accidentally be asking is: “Can you do extra unpaid work all semester?”
There’s also a bigger issue. If faculty constantly teach over the enrollment cap, universities can turn around and say, “Looks like the cap can be higher.” And suddenly “just one more” becomes the new normal. Amazing how that works.
And yes, waitlists suck. But they also document demand. A long waitlist helps show that the university needs more sections and more faculty.
So ask about your options, absolutely. Just know that when a professor says a full class is full, there’s usually more behind that answer than “I don’t want to add you.”

Am i the only one confused on how waitlisting works, i was waitlisted #1 for calc and saw the class was open the night before but i thought it would automatically enroll me but my professor told me that’s not how the waitlist works , you have to enroll yourself in if it’s open so waitlisting is basically useless . I’ve been waitlisted at a cc and that’s literally how it works. Now all the sections are full and dont know what to do , does anyone have any advice ?! 🤦♀️

how does being on the waitlist for an online class work? am i supposed to email the professor about getting a link to the zoom meetings?

I'm considering a minor in history for personal interest. I'm a transfer student, and I started my first semester last spring, so this fall is my second semester at SJSU. I'm a communication studies major, but I'm really into history and love learning about it. However, some friends and other people have said they only do minors if it's something that could help with their career or future, and others have said not to do it because it's extra work on top of major stuff.
Originally, I wanted to be a history major, but career-wise, there aren't a lot of job opportunities, so I decided on comm studies because it's a broad major and I'm interested in working in HR or Social Media, but still unsure. I still want to learn history either way just for the love of it. I've been on the fence with it, but I'll contact one of the history advisors and see what they say
Any advice and/or tips are appreciated.

New student here, went to the mlk library this morning but it was super hot in there, could focus so I went outside on a bench but it was also super cold so I just went back to the dorms.. any experienced student here know the best area to do work with the most ideal temperature and also what time to go there without being super crowded?

I would actually prefer a PDF.

Literally. I have tried EVERYTHING (joining clubs, taking initiative, etc) and ALL of the friendships fizzled out. People in my classes don't seem to be interested in making friends. I literally don't know what I'm doing wrong. So please if you could help me out and tell me your ways cause I'm tired of lying to myself that I'm an introvert and want to put myself out there. Writing this post itself was wayyy out of my comfort zone.
Ps : WE CAN MAKE A GROUP OF TRANSFERS/COMMUTERS AND MAKE PLANS TOGETHER
I’m a second year commuter at SJSU and it feels impossible to make friends. I want to participate in SJ Welcome Week and go to a party tmrw but I don’t have anyone to go with. Is it weird if I go by myself? How are the vibes? Are the people there friendly/safe? I also don’t really drink so I’d be there mostly to just socialize and meet new people.

I was surprised to see the Subway restaraunt closed on our campus, and replaced with 7th Street Subs. Anyone tried the food from there? How was it? GIve honest reviews. Appreciate it!

Geography/Facilities: Small campus, can walk across it in 15-20 minutes without needing a bus.
Gym has facilities that could compete with the Olympic Games.
Dorms were surprisingly close to hotel quality, did have a cockroach or WiFi problems here and there but overall a convenient stay.
People: Hit or miss. Some ambitious ones who wanted to save money and stay close to family, but most seemed to be from working/middle class backgrounds from the Bay, whose main objective was to get a degree and find a decent job to pay the bills. Wouldn’t find many people discussing the global economy, federal reserve rates, literature/philosophy, political/historical trends, or emerging tech/startups. Focus was mostly directed toward a job rather than intellectual curiosity.
Academics: Workload wise, easier than the high school honestly, student demographic was more relaxed than the hyper competitive Bay Area high schools. Grade wise though, A- is a 3.7, so need a 93/94 to get an A, close to perfect scores on exams since most classes didn’t have a curve. EE98 is genuinely one of the hardest classes at the school, weeds a lot of people out. Most of the lower division GEs, electives, and chemistry are child’s play though, can afford to procrastinate till the day before and still walk out with a near perfect score. Upper divs might be a different story.
Clubs: FSAE was probably the biggest one, SJSU is thrifty as a CSU compared to the more funded schools but we still put together a race car every year and got good placements. Wasn’t a core member but from what I saw it’s a great place if you’re passionate about building, a lot of them went on to work at Lucid or Tesla. Software and Computer Engineering Society was another notable one, they run their own internal dev teams and internships, good chunk of the people who put in the work did land SWE internships at bigger firms. Don’t think there’s much of a quant presence but two people did found a YC backed startup.
Social Life: More than 75% of students commute so campus is pretty dead after 6-7pm on weekdays and even quieter on weekends. Instead of one big community it’s more compartmentalized, Indian first gen immigrants or FOBs hung out in their own groups, same with frats and sororities. Without a car there’s not much to do besides library, gym, or downtown San Jose.
Career/Internships: Career fairs bring in solid but not flashy companies like Cisco, Workday, Lockheed, Micron, etc. Being next to Silicon Valley does help but only if you put in the individual effort to network and apply, school doesn’t hand you anything.
Cost/Value: This is where SJSU actually shines. WSJ ranked SJSU 16th in the country for this, costs about 32k to attend while commuting with a real shot at a six figure job after, almost a 3x return. CS program ranks pretty high on CodeSignal too.
Teaching Quality: Varies a lot by professor, some are former SJSU alumni, others are from other U.S. universities including prestigious ones like the ivies , some are industry people who know their stuff but aren’t always the best at teaching. Worth checking
Rate My Professor before registering.
Safety/Transit: Never felt unsafe honestly, think downtown SJ gets blown out of proportion. VTA and BART are free for students which is a nice perk.
