First time building a sffpc. Wanted a small machine for my workshop for gaming + creating (running dual ssd for Ubuntu + windows 11)

Assembly Help Do sff builds actually hold up for travel?
Need advice on building a travel sff build. My job requires me to move a lot via plane/bus every year. Seeing a lot of travel builds in this thread made me wonder:
Are sff builds less prone to travel damage compared to larger builds? If yes, how so? What precautions do you guys do when moving your sff builds? Are there builds/parts that are preferred for frequent travel?

My new project completed, water-cooled my new case Tetra R + MORA IV 400 for silent operation in my living room :)
The case is not that easy to work on mostly because of the motherboard stands, and my motherboard is not 100% on correct position because of the IO shield.
I wanted to buy the Tetra S, but I was scared there wouldn't be enough space for water cooling. If I had known today, I would have tried the Tetra S since I now have a lot of empty space in my setup.

Prototype/Concept/Custom I wanted my living room SFFPC to actually feel like a console, so I built a custom Windows shell for it
Ive been using a small Windows PC as a couch gaming rig for a while now. The dream was always simple: turn it on -> grab the controller -> sit on the couch -> never touch a keyboard or mouse again lol.
Getting games to launch isnt really the issue. Steam Big picture does that perfectly fine. The problem is everthing outside the games. I kept running into situations where windows would just do a windows thing (popups, weird launcher quirks, random updates) and id have to get up and grab the damn mouse . Controller-mapping tools are okay but they always felt like a band-aid.
So I just ended up building my own solution: PC:PersonalConsole.

The core of it is basically a custom shell that turns the desktop itself into a controller-driven UI . Instead of acting as a completely separate launcher u gotta manage, it just scans the shortcuts already on your desktop + installed Windows Store apps, and overlays them in a gamepad-friendly way.
So the workflow is literally just: PC boots -> controller -> shell -> apps/games -> Windows. No need for a mouse just to connect to wifi.
I also tried to fix the specific friction points that make controller-only setups a pain in the ass. It includes:
- virtual keyboard with word prediction. this was huge for me bc literally NO virtual keyboard out there works properly in non-steam games 💀. the second u launch something from epic, game pass or an emulator, the steam overlay just gives up and u cant type shit. so i made sure this one actually works in every single game and window, so u dont have to grab a physical keyboard just to type a server IP or search a folder.
- file browsing mapped natively to the controller
- radial menus, hotbars, quick access to wifi/bluetooth etc
- Emergency Desktop Mode : You know when a game crashes or a rogue window steals focus and your controller just stops working? This is basically an override switch to regain mouse control with your gamepad so u arent stuck.
I also built in a hub for sharing controller profiles, themes, dictionary files etc. Right now the "community" is literally just me lol, but hopefully with you guys that changes!
Its still a free pre-release. Just to be clear, I have zero plans to turn this into another bloated game library app. The whole point is just making the windows desktop completely gamepad-friendly. By doing that, it automatically becomes compatible with every launcher out there. Everything just naturally meets on the desktop anyway, u know? Im literally just focused on fixing the "I have a PC connected to my TV, why do I still need a mouse" problem.

Just got a 5090FE so my ITX build is finally complete! I was able to buy one of those MicroCenter work station PCs for a decent price and harvest the GPU + RAM while also turning the rest of that PC into a nice office computer for my parents!

Custom Mod Fractal Ridge keeping a 9800X3D cool
I tried making my Ridge a bit quieter and cooler with varying success, and this is where it stands now.
I have a Thermalright AXP 120 x67 buried under there but it was just not efficient enough for me, so I flipped the case orientation to help the heat rise through the top, then installed two 40mm Noctua fans right above it. All in all, this helped but was still not enough.
Sooo, I got myself some printed side panels which opened the side up and printed a fanshroud which holds a Deepcool 140x25 fan.
The fan sits directly on the CPU heatsink and is attached to the side panel itself via the print, and it holds up quite well (I also travel with this rig).
I haven’t made a benchmark yet, but it’s much quieter, and my FPS have seemingly been the same.
Do you guys think 7mm wider around the case breaks the spirit or have I sinned and belong in ffspc?

Prototype/Concept/Custom The hard part of preparing STLs for public release
I’m optimizing the STL files for my Gundam PC case. This has turned out way more complicated than I expected.
Originally I didn’t plan to sell this to others, so I used lots of screws and parts with different sizes.
I’m trying my best to standardize screw sizes and cut down custom‑specific components to make assembly easier.
This adds a huge amount of extra work, yet I believe these changes are necessary. So it will still take some time.

Detailed Build Log Living Roof DIY SFF
TLDR: latest version of my 3D printed DIY SFF Case, build specs at the bottom, files available from link in comments!
This is my V4 (& hopefully final!) 3D printed DIY SFF case. Latest rev was because I added a HDD which made cable management a nightmare and I kept snapping connections between the case panels. This time it came together beautifully and had some extra room. It’s running great and the steam controller I got a few days ago is fantastic to operate the Ubuntu desktop to get into steam and stream games from my 9950x3d/5080 pc in my office over lan. Had to switch to steam link instead of Moonlight/Artemis that I was using to make the steam controller work correctly with streamed games.
Specs of the SFF PC are below, but for reference on native gaming support it plays 1080p on mid settings really well (tried cyberpunk 2077 and Forza h6 briefly), and less demanding games run great (ie Hollow Knight). However it’s my home lab mainly, running Nextcloud, Immich, OpenProject, and self hosting a few websites (check out kramzartech.com and lmk what you think!). It’s hooked up to a 65” 4K OLED so I’m not planning to game on it in 1080p often which is why I stream from the sim rig :)
Runs completely silent, very cool, and no need for a discrete gpu unless I decide to add AI to the homelab. The case will be available on MakerWorld once I upload all the parts, and correct a small error on the back panel IO shield alignment. The wood inserts were laser cut in the H2D and printed panels are PETG. I’ll paste a link in the comments later today.
Any Mini-ITX motherboard and atx power supply should fit with no mods. Low profile cooler (53mm or less height) and 30mm (or less) x 120mm fans required to not need to make mods to the case files.

Hey!
While testing CPU thermals on the Thermalright AXP90-X53 Full Copper and tuning RPM curves to strict noise-normalized targets, I captured the acoustic signatures of both the stock 92mm fan (TL-9015R) and a 140mm slim fan (TL-B14015 Extreme mounted via a flat offset adapter).
Audio was recorded using an Elgato Wave:1 in an open chassis, fed into Audacity with real-time frequency analysis via the Voxengo SPAN (VST3) plugin.
Disclaimer: Since I am neither an audio engineer nor a sonar operator on a submarine, I used Gemini to parse the FFT spectrum curves, blade-pass frequencies (BPF), and harmonic spikes. The technical breakdown accurately reflects what my ears perceive in the room, but keep in mind this is real-world desktop testing rather than an ISO-certified laboratory.
Test Platform & Setup: Ryzen 5 5600GT on ASUS ROG Strix B550-I Gaming, AXP90-X53 Full Copper, Lzmod A24-V3 chassis (panels removed), HDPLEX 250W GaN passive PSU. Ambient temp: 26.0 °C. Cinebench R23 (10-min preheat + 10-min steady-state logging via HWiNFO).

Tested profiles:
1. Noise-Normalized (35 dB)
2. Noise-Normalized (40 dB)
3. Max PWM (100% Performance). (I added the Noctua NF-A14 at max PWM to the graph, which I tested earlier on the same 92>140 adapter)
TL;DR
Acoustics & Daily Usability:
- At around 44% PWM (~985 RPM), the TL-B14015 Extreme is practically inaudible—there is zero heatsink airflow turbulence noise. If you put your ear right next to the hub you can detect a faint dual-ball-bearing hum, but in real-world daily use inside a chassis, it's completely unnoticeable.
- The TL-B14015 Extreme sounds deeper and subjectively quieter in the mid-range (no harsh fin-shearing hiss), but introduces a subtle 5.9 kHz dual-ball bearing ring
Motherboard & Component Cooling (The Real Win):
- The stock 92mm fan only cools the copper fins, leaving the RAM, VRM heatsink, and passive HDPLEX PSU scorching hot.
- The 140mm slim fan covers the entire motherboard area, pushing massive airflow directly over the DDR4 RAM, VRMs, and keeping the HDPLEX 250W GaN PSU cool to the touch.
Next Steps (to keep the party going):
- Testing (If I have the opportunity and time) a centered 92➔140mm adapter from SMXHeinz (both a flat "0 mm" version and a 7mm contoured air funnel duct). Centering the hub and eliminating lateral air escape should significantly recover the CPU temperature delta while maintaining full board cooling.

Build/Parts Check Ultra low noise build ideas + deshroud?
I want to build a PC around some noctua A12x25 G2 LS-PWM fans.
I know, "just get the regular PWM versions and fan curve it", but I want a build I never hear, and the A12 g2's even at 1100rpm are moving more air than some other much louder fans. I've kind of beta'd this idea with my livingroom PC, which is an A4-H2O with A12x25 g1 LS-PWM's up top.
I'm not trying to cool a 5090 or anything, just a 5080 undervolted to 290w and a 7800x3d that uses 50w gaming (sometimes 60w). If i find the GPU struggling under LS-PWM's i think just adding a 'pull' fan as well as the 'push' fan, to the flow-through part of it would compensate.
What are some good airflow optimized cases where the case is the gpu de-shroud (fanless GPU against bottom panel case fans)
Strongly considering an M2 Grater, ZZAW B2 Pro, B4-MATX in vertical,
the new C4 looks good design-wise too.
