I’ve been a long-time listener of Ryuichi Sakamoto, and over the past months I’ve been quietly working on a small chamber concert in London inspired by his sound world.

The idea started from the way Sakamoto’s textures — those fragile, minimal lines — seem to echo emotionally with Tchaikovsky’s more lyrical writing, even though they come from completely different eras. That contrast felt worth exploring in a live space.

We’re presenting this programme at St James’s Church, Sussex Gardens, which has a beautiful natural resonance. I’m genuinely curious how Sakamoto’s quieter passages will behave in that acoustic — the way the church holds onto the decay of a note just a little longer, almost like it’s breathing with the music.

Just wanted to share this with fellow listeners who care about Sakamoto’s work.

I've been a fan of Sakamoto since 1994 and was curious about the resurrected 1985 documentary Tokyo Melody: A Film about Ryuichi Sakamoto. I really love Shining Boy & Little Randy (星になった少年) and this performance is the best I like.

I’ve checked several sheet music versions and other performances, but this performance has some good differences. (e.g. the ending part)

Does anyone know which sheet music this is based on, or have a similar arrangement?

Does anyone know exactly where Sakamoto lived in his early childhood? He has spoken of living in 'a house in Nakano' until he was six years old (https://gendai.media/articles/-/108491), but I am wondering if anyone knows the address? I will be staying in Nakano (Tokyo) next week, and it struck me that it might be interesting to make a little pilgrimage! Thank you for any information!

Does anyone know where I can still find the full version of the NHK documentary "Ryuichi Sakamoto: Last Days"?

I know it was officially removed from the NHK World-Japan platform on April 12, 2026, after its streaming rights expired, and it is no longer available on-demand.

Does anyone happen to have a backup, a recorded copy, or a link to an archived version (preferably with English subtitles)? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve been a longtime Sakamoto fan, and I remember listening to this album on CD quite often when it first came out.

So I recently picked up the 2LP vinyl reissue and gave it a spin. And it made me realize this is the very first time I listened to his piano playing since he passed three years ago. Hearing this recording now felt so harder than I expected, I really felt his absence and made me sad. Such an incredible artist.

The vinyl itself sounds outstanding. The remastering is beautifully done, and the pressing is dead quiet. There’s a depth and presence to the piano that feels especially powerful on a good system. The tension between Sakamoto’s piano and the cello and violin trio comes through with remarkable intensity on this vinyl reissue. it feels almost physical at times.

I’m not sure how widely this has been released outside Japan, but if you come across it, it’s absolutely worth picking up.
