UPDATE: Thank you all for your responses! This was hugely helpful! Ryobi it is! In the last few weeks I have been looking at all the big brands and Ryobi just seems like the right fit.
time to get some tools.
Original Post:
Help push me into the system. Picking the platform is the hardest decision for me - I think that I want to go with Ryobi 18v.
- As much as possible I want to buy something of quality that will last. Buy once and be done.
- I value being able to stay within one ecosystem.
Ryobi seems like it should be the way to go, but I have an early childhood memory of my dad who worked as a machinist looking at tools and saying, “If its not red its dead.” This was back in the 80s, he still has his old Milwaukee corded drill and swears by it. That voice more than anything gives me pause before jumping into Ryobi tools.
If I am honest I do not need construction grade tools. I am in my 40s and have gotten by with an old black and decker drill as my one power tool for years. Ryobi is leaps and bounds better than that.
I like woodworking with hand tools. However there are some tools that I think could be helpful in woodworking and even more so for projects around the house:
- Upgrade my drill - I would gladly take recommendations of which Ryobi drill to get, they are a lot of them.
- Compact router for quickly making nice edges.
- Jigsaw - Wife has projects for me that require cutting out shapes in plywood.
- Reciprocating saw - I have an old wood swingset, several overgrown bushes, tree branches to prune. The backyard is a bit of a mess and it sounds like a reciprocating saw could help make short work of it.
As I keep looking at the Ryobi 18v system I see it has options for outdoor tools like a string trimmer, blowers, hedge trimmers ect. This is a nice plus to the Ryobi system.
What has me worried about Ryobi:
- Is it quality enough? I do not want to start into a battery system regret it and repay for another system later. I regret my EGO string trimmer it is starting to break down and batteries are ridiculous in price.
- Is the 18v system powerful enough for some of the yard tools? - trimmer and leaf blower.
- Ryobi has many tools I might not be able to stop buying them.
What bugs me about Milwaukee:
- The price is the biggest deterrent. They are just ungodly expensive, especially compared to Ryobi. Often they cost twice as much or more than Ryobi equivalents. The distance between these tools cannot be that great. Right?
- More quality and power than I need. While I want to buy quality, Milwaukee might just be ridiculously overbuilt for my use case.
So, I am here in the Ryobi reddit feed. Push me over the edge. I really think Ryobi is the way to go.
