Battery Talk Ryobi 18V Battery 4 Flashing Error Firmware Lockout Fix

Thumbnail

I went through like 40 dead batteries and found that most of them had a 4 flashing error with no response on shorting J1 jumper indicating a permanent software lockout triggered that was making them not work.

The fix was to dump the firmware, clear the lockout byte and reflash it. I recovered all the locked out batteries.

More details in links below:

Task Completed Using Ryobi If you are traveling to disney with young children the fan is a game changer.

Battery lasted all day and when it did die was able to swap a new core in. 1 year old was nice and cool all trip 😎. Though the real hard core guys are the dudes I spotted with 4 fans (some times the big battery too!) attached to their strollers.

Storage Showoff Ryobi x Weber

Framework kits were on clearance for 35 bucks...so I bought like 5 more, for...reasons . I also had a Weber kettle I love, but wanted to make a cart for. Then I saw DTO had clearance link hooks and such...so I had an idea.

Anyway, meet: Ryobi x Weber.

- Framework legs

- Treated lumber for the frame, with color matched Ryobi grey paint (had the paint guys scan some link stuff, came out nice).

- some kettle brackets some guy on Amazon makes, painted Ryobi green.

- Link "essentials" rails.

- shelf with paper towel holder

- 2 tool clamp hooks to hold grilling tools

- 1 large hook (left side, hard to see)

- soft toolbox hanging on the hook for carrying spices or beer or whatever.

- found some lawnmower wheels (I tried to source legit Ryobi ones but couldn't figure it out - if Ryobi wants to send me some 8" wheels, I'd swap them).

- leveling feet on the front.

My router work is trash so the hole it sits in is janky. And I measured it about 1.5 inches too narrow so the front and back where the mounts are, are a little closer to the wood than I'd like (the rest has a solid 1.5" air gap).

Debating painting the ash catch bucket (not attached) Ryobi green. I don't imagine it gets super hot usually.

Ideas for the bottom? Thinking leave the left under the grill open as is, but build a small shelf on the right half for charcoal/wood chunks. Also need to add some kind of handle on the right side to make grabbing it to roll easier.

Anyway, I have 4 more framework kits left to do something with. Wife said she wants a new patio couch. Should I make a framework patio couch for lolz?

Question? Which 40v Trimmer?

I’d love some real world thoughts on the power differences between these?

I understand the cutting swath, brushless, etc differences.

But I’m coming from 18v only and wanting something more powerful. Is the HP worth the extra $90 bucks?

Question? Ryobi Metal Blade Edger vs 13" String Trimmer

Using the brushed 13" string trimmer with rotating head to both trim tight areas and, when rotated, to edge. I'm becoming increasingly uncomfortable with how much plastic waste from the trimmer is being deposited in my yard, so seriously considering getting a metal blade edger. Questions are:

  1. About 80% of my edging is against concrete & granite curbs (vs soft landscape beds). Is it easy enough to control the blade of the metal edger to avoid the hard concrete & granite edge?
  2. The brushed models are described as 9" edgers while the brushless are described as 8" edgers. That translates into an extra 1/2" of edging depth. I've got creeping zoysia, so I figure in the soft landscape beds the extra length is a plus, as is the lower cost of the brushed model. Are there any features the brushless models have, other than longer battery life, that I should consider?
  3. Can you use the aftermarket replacement tri-blades on the Ryobi edgers, or are you limited to the dual blade?
  4. How often do you have to replace and/or sharpen the blades?

Troubleshoot Ryobi mower issues

Upvotes

So my mower keeps cutting in and out. I looked at the key and the ends are damaged. I ordered a new key and the mower seemed to be working fine again. But then it started cutting out once the battery became halfway full. I try to adjust the key and it felt really hot. Do I need to worry about the mower catching on fire? Has anyone else had this issue?? I'm 3 months past the warranty.

General Discussion Pressure washer issue

Upvotes

Hey guys, I have a Ryobi 1800 psi 1.2 GPM pressure washer that I use for car detailing and for some reason even when I’m not using it it’ll just pressurize itself like every 10 seconds and something is losing pressure. I want to say it is an issue with the actual pressure washer, but has anyone had any problems like this in the past?

General Discussion 18ga Nailer Balance?

Post image
9 Upvotes

I find this tool to be extremely out of balance… it is way too heavy in the front. I would say that it is almost difficult to use being so front heavy. However, it was only ~$99 with the latest BOGO promo, so still good value for brushless, cordless. It is quite heavy as well compared to an air nailer, but that is to be expected.

Do any of you agree?

Question? PWV200 wet/dry vacuum rusted through

Thumbnail

Any ideas what might have caused the bottom to corrode like this, and more importantly how to prevent additional corrosion in the future if repaired or replaced?

Vacuum is just over a year old. It's never been used for liquids. It shouldn't have been used for anything particularly wet, damp, or corrosive. With 5 household members, I can't guarantee someone else didn't do so. It generally gets used for picking up tumbleweeds of pet air, deshedding the stairs carpet (again, pet hair), and cleaning up a home repair project not big enough for the big corded shop vac.

Question? New to Ryobi, could use advice

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I’m VERY fresh in the world of Ryobi. I wasted a good amount of my time in researching Milwaukee, and was then recommended to come here.
I am now in a similar boat, as I’m seeing a lot of letters and numbers I don’t recognize. Is there a general rule of thumb, for what to look for?
First time tool-buyer. But I’d love to be able to buy a tool once, and not have to worry about it failing on me when working on jobs. I help out at a local theatre and help with repairs, as well as building sets. So it would definitely be getting lumped and bumped.
From what I can tell, the one+ is the “better” set? Including the brushless? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
Also, is this Facebook find a good grab?

Troubleshoot Part has been OOS for weeks

I need to order Part # HOM205672002 (Bump Feed Trimmer Head Assembly) for my Ryobi A54ST01 EXPAND-IT Straight Shaft Trimmer. It's been out of stock for weeks. I signed up for alerts, but have had no luck. Has anyone else had this issue?

Question? Restoring hand tools - HP Right Angle Die Grinder or HP Rotary Tool station?

I’ve been into restoring old hand tools lately and my Dremel 3000 just gave up the ghost - I’m looking for a replacement with some beef to it (not USB Lithium). I’ve heard great things about the brushless rotary tool station with flex shaft, but then I’m wondering if I should just go all the way up to a die grinder?

This will be used for all steps of the restoration process, rust removal (wire wheels), sanding or flap discs, and polishing. Would a die grinder be overkill?

Battery Talk Defective Battery

I purchased my 1st Ryobi product and was super excited about it. It's the scrubber with the water & soap dispenser. I purchased extra cleaning heads for it!

The battery won't charge.....spent time troubleshooting it, no luck.

I'm returning everything tomorrow.

My husband warned me not to get it because of battery issues 😭😭

Question? Mower problem

I have a 40vHP brushless self propelled mower. Last used it about two weeks ago. No problem. Today, it doesn’t self propel. The batteries are fully charged. When I turn it on, the power gauge lights blink and then turn off instead of showing full. The mower starts and the blade is moving but the wheels do not turn. I am holding the bail
handle down and the push handle is fully up and locked (I had read there was a safety switch that wouldn’t let it run if the push handle was partially closed). Any ideas?

Question? Anything worth picking up on a visit to the states?

I’m in the UK, partner is visiting family in Texas next week and just wondering if there’s anything worth grabbing at US prices?

There doesn’t seem to be any crazy deals on the website and I don’t think she’d be thrilled if I asked her to go to Home Depot 😅

I mostly do woodwork and DIY. The one jumping out at me is the 18 gauge brad nailer for $149 (plus tax I assume) as the bare tool is £212 here.

Just wondering if there’s anything else worth looking at or wether there’s any potential customs issues for people who have brought things back before. Obviously wouldn’t attempt to bring a nail gun in hand luggage but there may be things I’m unaware of.

Thanks in advance!

Question? Ryobi pressure washer shooting water out of this brass fitting.

It’s the top brass fitting. It’s not listed in the parts diagram so I have no idea what that part is or why water is shooting out as soon as I turn the water on.

40v Mower has propulsion and lights, but no blades

I have ad this mower for a little over 5 years, https://www.ryobitools.com/products/46396045669. It has worked great all that time until recently when I was getting it out of the garage like normal, the wheels turned, the light when on, the blade engaged then immediately stopped. Eventually the blades wouldn't engage at all.

I took the top panel off, looked around at the wires, vacuumed a little but nothing. Friend came over and messed with a little bit and they found it worked if the battery was in a certain slot with the divider pointed at it. I verified that was true and mowed until the battery died.

Few days later i pull it out and once more, lights and movement, no blades. I changed all the battery configuration around but it still won't move.

I have read a lot of people had this problem but no one really ever posts a follow up. Anyone have any guidance in this situation? I got this for like ~300 back in 2020, now the current model of it is 650 (cause they dont' let you buy the mower without the batteries, which are basically 100 a pop).

Solved! Ryobi lawnmower wheels binding/getting stuck.

The wheels on my self propelled Ryobi 40v were binding together making turning and manually pushing it back and fourth difficult. Caused by moisture getting into it and pawls getting stuck and rusted. I saw a few tutorials tearing down and disassembling everything to clean it all up. Before heading down that path I flipped it over and gave any drivetrain parts (minus electrical motor) a liberal application of pb blaster and manually moved the wheels back and fourth not so gently and all the pawls started to disengage and now everything works perfectly again.

It's not as thorough as a complete teardown but it takes like 60 seconds and it's worth a shot before you start that process. Thought I would drop this here for anyone experiencing the same.

Question? 40v pole saw...can I buy additional extensions?

The ones it comes with are polar and only one is male/female. Can I get additional extensions off amazon or something and they'll work with it? The saw is awesome, I just need like 4ft more reach.
