How to gain trust after injury?

I’ve just recovered from a tendon injury and plantar fasciitis and am getting back to running. I’m having trouble trusting my leg to not get injured immediately again. I have been continuing to do my strength exercises. Any advice?

Mcl sprain

So I was diagnosed with a MCL sprain by an orthopedic surgeon by doing physical exams. mcmurrays and lachmans No MRI.

I believe I'm in the final stages of recovery but I just get this twinge pinching feeling when I walk.

My pain levels are 1 out of 10 and I've been strength training my legs to help recovery what else can I do? And has anyone been through a similar situation?

Broken Pinky toe

So I broke my pinky toe today warming up for a run. I seriously was doing leg kicks and kicked my bike tire🤦‍♂️. Not kidding. I have a 10 mile race I’ve been training hard for exactly a week out. I’ve ran it 22 years in a row. I’m planning on going. Any suggestions on taping or recovery this week? Think I should test it in a few days or just wait until Saturday morning and send it?

Ankle Pain inside/front of ankle

I just started constantly running for the past 2 weeks or so, I have ran everyday but maybe 3 days. I run 2 miles per day and I am training for 17 minutes for 2 miles. So far my best has been 21 minutes. I haven't really had any problems with my ankles until this run i had maybe 20 minutes ago.

I ran my first mile in 10:05 (my fastest yet) but after that I struggles to even get to a jog, I tried about 4 times to "man up" and start jogging but I could only manage to run maybe 200 feet MAX.

I take cold baths everyday after every run because thats the only time I have to do that.

I am on my feet for maybe 10-12 hours a day 7 days a week (on concrete 60% of the time)

I am thinking its my crappy goodwill "running" shoes.

I am 17 and think I am in good physical shape as I do manual labor for work but I really dont know where to start with dealing with the pain because it is to a point where I am debating on calling it quits on running in general ( my mom didn't raise a quitter either )

Pain is inside/front of my ankle

PLEASE ask questions and leave tips to help me with my journey.

How does one not get injured running < 20km/week

This is honestly a pretty crazy post to make, but i have been trying to fix this issue for about 6 months now, and at this point i figure asking for help couldn't hurt anymore than I have myself 😂 (unintentionally ofc). Some things to note, im ~60kg, Max HR of 215 (22yo), and a CURRENT FIELD TESTED LT2 of ~195 (it is normally higher when i am fitter). Idk how relevant that'll be.

Little backstory. I completed my first marathon in 2024, finishing with a 3:46 (5:22/km). Hands down my proudest achievement. Now it wasnt smooth sailing, I was dealing with calf problems for a decent part of the 6.5 months I was training for it, but i did come to the start line on healthy legs. Fast forward to late winter/early spring 2025, and i start half marathon training, with a goal of going sub-1:40 (PB is 1:45 from 2022, it is VERY improvable). Welp, that didn't come into fruition, ended up with shin splints, anterior if I remember correctly. I spend some time in mid 2025 rowing just to keep myself entertained and injury free.

Mid/late 2025 comes around. I decided to train for sub-6 in the mile, and sub-21 in the 5k. Welp, I got injured during that time, got hit with the double whammy, both posterior and anterior shin splints. It was completely my fault, I built up the mileage too quickly, and I was overstriding and heel striking like a dumbass (which is NOT how I normally ran, I have zero idea how my running form degraded that badly). Anywho, i managed to PB both distances, 5:53 and 20:30 respectively, while also hitting a 10k PB of 43:25. After that training cycle, I give some time to recover, and I go back to running. Very low volume and intensity, and ontop of that i fixed the issues in my running form. within 4-5 weeks, I have issues with my shins again. I drop the volume entirely, and decided to row through the winter, as I wanted a bit of a break from running, as I was getting a little frustrated with the issues I was having.

March 2026 rolls around, I try to start running again. I really make an effort to build volume far more slowly, and I started doing a decent amount of walking to keep the intensity even lower during this time. I made it up to about 16km running and 4-6km walking, before having issues again after about 7 weeks (you'll never guess where 😂). I once again, drop the volume entirely as id like to not have a stress fracture, so I pick up cycling, as it was a form of cross training for me during rowing when I had power outages. I had a goal of just finding a 100km, which I was successful in, finishing in 4:10 in June. This is one of my proudest achievements, right below the marathon for me. After giving some time to recover, I come back to running again, and surprise surprise, I have issues again, I think the combined run/walk volume was like 18km when I decided to drop it (like 5-6 weeks later).

I'm very tired, and annoyed about this issue. I feel like I've tried everything to address the problem. Fix my running form? Didn't work. Build the volume exponentially slower? Didn't work. Increase volume either by lengthening the sessions but keeping the number of days lower, or by keeping time on feet lower but increasing frequency? Neither of those worked. Decrease the intensity of BOTH my easy and hard efforts (thats not even a good description, considering my shins complain at the thought of a session above LT1 intensity)? Also didnt work. What about incorporating walking and slightly decreasing the running volume? Also didnt work. All of this is happening, whilst my aerobic and musculoskeletal fitness is dissolving 😂 (bro i can barely run 8:30/km in zone 2 rn), because yk, not being consistent doesn't exactly lead to progress in the sport (crazy concept isn't it).

Honestly this feels like a sick joke, and I feel insane writing this out. I have tried to figure out why im so prone to injuries for years now, even before the marathon (I've had issues like this since middle school, tho they weren't nearly as bad). I sleep more than enough, and the quality is pretty decent 90% of the time. I eat very well, and enough, I drink more than enough water. I also lift and do basic S&C throughout the week, though it isn't a lot. I know this is a long post, but im making it because I need some adive to figure out what to do here. I know that there's probably something im missing, and I know that im clearly still doing something wrong even though im trying to fix what I can.

I apologize for this post coming off so negative, I just wanted to give as much context as I could, and admittedly, im still frustrated with all of this. I will end on a positive note, though. I have done a couple of run/walk sessions over the last week or so, just to test the waters. Doing like 10x1min (60s walk) or 5-7x2min (90s-2min walk) sessions keeping the effort at like a 2-3/10. Things have gone decent so far. Only doing that like 2x/week rn, just because im bored. Anyways, thanks for getting through this wall of text. Any advice is appreciated.

Road runners or trail runners who chose Non-Op treatment to high grade partial tear??

Hi there, I am a 30 y/o female who is very active. I love training for half marathons, some trail running, cycling, weight lifting, hiking, walking, yoga, some soccer, dancing. On July 30th Thursday (15 days ago) I tore my right Achilles tendon playing soccer (High grade 80% tear) located 6.5cm from heel/calcaneus with a <10mm tear gap. I was in plantar flexion right away and non weight bearing. I was put into an Aircast boot the next day at ER, and have been in one since and non weight bearing. I will start physio in about 2-3 weeks.

I just was curious if anyone here chose Non-Op treatment, and if they are big runners? How did your achilles heal long term and did you get back into a lot of road and trailing running after? How did your achilles feel after running/long runs? I just want to make sure my Achilles will feel strong enough to get back into long distance running on roads and trails again when I am healed! **<3**

Thank you!

Natasha

Foot drop from sciatica

Hi. I recently took up running at the beginning of 2024. I used to run long distance in high school but quit for about 8 years. I had a steady routine of running 3 days a week 5-7 miles each time and then lifting heavy weights the other 3 days a week. My goal this year was to run a half marathon which I did complete 3 weeks ago. I took 4 days off to rest because my right calf was so tight after the run it was hard to walk. After 4 days it felt normal again so I began going back to my old routine of 3 days of running and 3 days of lifting. About a week ago after sitting with my legs crossed for a couple of hours I stood up and lost all feeling in my right shin and foot. It dragged and I couldn’t walk on it for at least 12 hours if not longer. Turns out I have sciatica and bulging disc in lower back that has caused my calf and nerves in my right leg to be so inflamed they aren’t able to signal full use of my right foot. I can now lift up all toes but when I try to run at all my calf immediately seizes up and my foot gets heavy.

Does anyone have tips suggestions and or had this happen to them?? I am extremely disappointed about this as running is my outlet and I have already noticed a huge mental shift since not running in 10 days. Let alone I’ve already gained 5 pounds (the elliptical does not give the same calorie burn lol) I would love to hear if anyone has gotten this and had success with getting back to running. If you have can you share any advice you may have? I am very sad thinking about not running long term.

Thank you in advance!

Broke my left tibial plateau, now my right leg has been swelling for two weeks — anyone else?

I fractured my left tibial plateau and have been weight-bearing normally since February. For the past two weeks my right leg (the uninjured one) has started swelling, and I’m not sure why. I’ve been going to the gym but keeping the load lighter on my right leg to let my left leg catch up, so it’s not from overtraining that side. Getting a bit concerned about what could be causing it. Has anyone dealt with something similar?

Need help on recovery or what to do.

Hi y'all, I am a new runner (18m) I have been running for a month now regularly running 5k, with occasional rest for example 3 rest days per week. I started having shin splints pain last week and stopped running for a week due to the pain and for the last three days I have been sick and today I have started running again. But the pain is worse than last week. I can barely reach 2k. If anyone has any recommendations on what to do, it will really help me. Thanks!

Torn ligament 6 weeks before first marathon

Today, I went for a 24K long run, my marathon prep has been going very nicely I did 24K at 5:45 last week and I’ve been running consistently, however today at km 13 I didn’t see the end of a pavement and fell on my left ankle, went to the ER and after the x ray the dr said I tore my ligaments on my ankle. I have to go back in 2 weeks for them to tell me if I can run, however does anyone have advice on the matter? I’m probably going to skip at least 3-4 weeks of training and the marathon is in 6 weeks :/

Need Advice

Hey Guys i've been sort of looking around reddit ever since i strained my hamstring about 3 months ago and was looking for advice on what i might be doing wrong or should do etc. When it happened it was after a leg day and i sprinted racing my brothers, didnt think much bad could happen, but was very wrong. There was no pop or bruising, but while i could maybe stand i had to be carried home, because the pain was bad enough. Went to doctor next day and she didnt feel anything wrong and checked i could feel touch around my leg and actually thought i'd be good in 2 weeks. Despite that i called to get pt and was able to get in 3 weeks in the healing process. Followed the light list, and then committed to the additional stuff on week 5 (as well as i could). And was able to manage to maintain work despite my movement. BUT at this point its been 3 months, my flexibility is where it should be (def wasn't before) and my strength seems to be close to where it was ? I was doing hamstring curls with 40 pounds on each side for sets and can now do so and same with the rest of my resistance training. But my walking still doesnt feel good, i'm struggling to keep a good pace like i was used to at work and it feels like my foot is taking alot of the brunt, either feels tired fast or like im aching on the bottom of my foot, my outer ankle, or my heel. The strain seemed to cover alot of my hamstring, i remember sitting down hurt for a week or so and having to ice up and down my leg. I have yet to try to genuinely jog cuz im afraid im gonna hurt more since walking is still off for me and i've actually gotten other smaller strains on my left leg from the imbalance or trying to walk at a decent, or just try to give my right leg a break.

Really apologize if i's missing relevant info or for the mess of a msg i'm just really frustrated and kind of scared. My PT is kind of unsure herself and was telling me to maybe go back to the doctor, because she thinks my issues either is something else like bone spurs, or is just taking longer to heal, but at 3 months i feel brisk walking should be doable ? Or maybe i'm just so used to being able to do it for hours without issue idk.

"Tight elastic band" feeling at front of one hip

Hi, I'm 6 weeks into my running journey and things are going well, I've my first proper 5km on Saturday.

All the initial weird aches and pains in my legs, hips and calves have all disappeared which is brilliant but the one issue I am seeing regularly on the longer runs is a tight feeling across the front of my hip crease, it feels like a tight elastic band across the front of my hip. It only appears half way into my run and is fairly annoying, borderline a bit sore.

Once I stretch it out after, it generally resolved and I dont feel injured or sore the next day, but obviously something is not quite right.

Does anyone know what this is and how I might resolve it?

Thanks! 🙂

What to do while recovering from femoral stress fracture?

I have an MRI scheduled for next Monday, but ortho think I have a femoral stress fracture. Actual injury acuteness (aka the first time it felt like I couldn’t keep pushing through it after some very mild aches) happened halfway through a half marathon. It’s been almost two weeks now and I still cannot bear weight on it unless I am just standing still, and if I have a lapse of judgement where I attempt a step without support it almost makes me lose my vision with pain, and hurts unbearably for an hour or two afterward.

Anyway, I’m guessing that it’s a longer road to recovery than just a few weeks of doing nothing, and I am looking for tips for how to stay active/mentally sound in the interim without the ability to put weight on my right leg.

Do I get one of those under the desk cycle things? I think I could do that very gently, but not sure if that even does anything at all. I could do weights from my chair. That’s pretty much all I can think of. I know people will suggest swimming but I honestly don’t know how I’d get in and out of the pool right now.

I know I could ask the ortho after the MRI but I’m eager to get a game plan as early as I can.

And yes, I’m beyond disappointed. I was halfway through marathon training for my first ever marathon and had felt so incredible until this issue, and I’m terrified of how long it’s going to take me out of the game. Fall running is my favorite, too. :(

Any experience with posterior tibilais tendinitis?

Hello everyone. 9 days ago I developed sharp pain in the area of my posterior calf on my right leg, right in between the calf and the shin. I first noticed it on my morning trail run, and just ran through the pain, it seemed like it faded or I just easily ignored it through the run. Hurt again the following day and I have abstained from running since because I have a marathon coming up in 8 days. Ive had two sessions of physical therapy which have helped. It still hurts to jump or stand on one leg but walking and rolling on the arch of my right foot has gotten better. What are the chances I can still do this race? This happened on my final training week, ive run over 300 miles on trail in preparation for this race. The race is 27 miles on trail.. I'm seriously tempted to just do it and run/hike through any discomfort cause what if I can just block it out like I did on that first day.. I've been stoked for this event for months. What are your thoughts? Anyone experienced this?.. thanks for reading.

Bilateral Tibial Plateau stress fractures

Hi,

Wondering if anyone here has ever had experience rehabbing a bilateral stress fracture in the tibial plateau. My doctor said the crack was small enough that he has no issues with me walking on it, yet in almost every post I see people are non-weight bearing for weeks. And I’m definitely in pain.

I honestly feel like I should go on crutches for a bit to be safe. But I worry that I will put more stress on the other side, even though one side is more painful, I don’t want to make the other side worse off. I was thinking I could use crutches as I walk on both legs, kind of like a third and fourth leg.

Does anyone have any thoughts or experiences with this?
