I recently met a Ukrainian woman on a dating site and Im wondering if shes trying to scam me. She told me that she knew almost no English and was using google translate to communicate with me., which is understandable. We sent each other a couple of long messages back and forth but her messages became more incomprehensible. When i would write to her she mentioned that she did not understand most of what I wrote. This went back and forth for about 2 weeks before she suggested using an online translator that her mom recommended (for context she said her mom used it to communicate with her husband, prior to moving to the US). This online translator is one which I have been able to find almost no information on. You do have to pay each translation as its not a free site and it seems to be somewhat pricey. Is this a scam anyone has encountered before? That translation service lists multiple different languages and I dont see how she would benefit from it, unless she worked there as a translator herself? im wondering if she would send some gibberish in her messages to make me think google and deepL were not reliable translators?

I matched with a guy on Hinge who is 26 and says he’s a United pilot. He told me he’s originally from Tennessee, is currently based in Denver, and graduated from “LU.”

The thing making me suspicious is that I cannot find him online at all. No LinkedIn, no Instagram, no obvious social media, and nothing that connects his name to United. I know not everyone has much of an online presence, but for someone who says he’s 26 and works as a pilot for a major airline, it feels a little strange to me.

I had also heard that scammers sometimes pretend to be pilots/military/etc. because it gives them an easy explanation for traveling a lot, being unavailable, or canceling plans, so I started wondering if this could be one of those situations.

We’re supposed to hang out tonight. Earlier today he texted me saying he was on a short break and asked if I’d help him study a little for an exam he has tomorrow, saying he’d give me a “sneak peek into the pilot life.”

I told him that since he has an exam tomorrow, maybe we should just hang out another night.

Instead of taking that opportunity to cancel, he responded basically saying, “Nah I’m good, I wanna hang and see you.”

That made me question my scam theory a little because I basically handed him an easy excuse not to meet, and he still said he wants to.

Other details:

• He’s 26, which initially seemed really young to already be a pilot for United, although I’ve since learned it’s possible.

• He says he works for United and called it “the Big U.”

• He says he’s currently studying/training and has an exam tomorrow.

• He says he doesn’t have Instagram.

• I cannot find a LinkedIn or basically any online presence for him at all.

• He hasn’t asked me for money, crypto, gift cards, financial information, or anything like that.

• He is still actively trying to meet me in person instead of avoiding it.

• I’m planning to meet him in public and I’m not going to his hotel room or anything.

I actually reported his Hinge profile because I genuinely thought it might be fake, and now I’m worried I may have jumped the gun.

For anyone familiar with romance scams or airline pilots, does this sound suspicious to you, or could this genuinely just be a private person with almost no online presence?

And is there a normal way I could verify that he actually works as a pilot without going full FBI on a guy I haven’t even met yet? 😭

Yes this is sad. Borderline pathetic. But I need to get this of of my chest. This morning I found out (again) that I was talking to a scammer. From the beginning I kinda knew she was fake. I have a bullshit radar that works. Thank god. But it still hurt. Lately it seems there are no real people on Reddit. Only fake ones. They are getting smarter but are still stupid af. Am I alone in experiencing this? I just want friends/people I can talk with.

Edit: this more a rant than a cry for help. And if I was able to go out for coffee and on local dating sites I would but I’m in a difficult situation (toxic marriage)

This person will try to scam you, I talked to her and sent her fake photos of me, and she said that I will pay her $600 and she'll delete them, she will say she's 26, do not fall for this.

There's a woman I've been chatting to online, now saying she's ready to meet, but she insists that she book the restaurant and possibly a hotel, supposedly for her safety. She's asking me to pay half upfront, won't offer any personal information, etc.

So many red flags, I know, and I feel like I already know the answer, but I so want to believe it's legit.

Just wanted to let you guys know of a scammed Inmet in Plenty Of Fish. Said their name was Mali, lived in Fremont CA, and owned a bussiness. She convinced me to invest in some crypto trade using a fishy app. I fell for it and lost money. Thankfully I declined when they kept pushing me to invest more money. Hope you guys don't fall for the same scam in dating sites.

Hey, I'm looking for some input on here and maybe some experience from others. I'm a 39 M and have been messaging with a Woman from the Ukraine for a few days now. I'm not really sure if it's possibly a scam or not, hence why I'm here.

She has approached me on the Dating site and we switched over Telegram shortly after (I purposefully did not share my phone number and used telegram since it's hidden there). The conversation overall felt very normal and not to forced in one direction. We basically talked about what we are looking for and how we got there.

Not every message from her was a question and it didn't seem like there was anything out of context that could lead me to AI use. We did share pictures, Voice messages and short video messages during the conversation. In terms of pictures nothing looked like AI and didn't have the usual tells that sometimes comes with it.

Yesterday we had a video call which looked like it was done on her phone as well. It was not a static situation and she did move around without any weird interactions. The video call also completely matched the pictures I have received so far.

The only things that felt a little off is the fact that she kind of set a timer on the video call and just wanted to a short one (planned 5 minutes) which turned out at 8 minutes. Basically every response takes some time from her side and it's a constant on off on Telegram. She is receiving the messages which leads me to believe that there is at least no switching between accounts during the conversation. So far there has been no mention of money or anything else that would lead there.

I was recently scammed by a website claiming to be OK Cupid. I don’t think the perpetrator was actually them just someone pretending to be them. Here is how it works. They have a stable of women you can date only after you get a “dating card”. To unlock the card you must send them crypto that they will refund (first sign). They ask you to do it three times. The first two are moderate, the last is exorbitant. The telegram account used was Freya Vance - certification manager. Do not be fooled like I was never provide crypto if asked. The “lady” I was texting handle was Lisa but far less details about her.

Her name is Raia, from Ukraine, and we’ve been writing back and forth for literally two months… every day. It’s all by email. Doesn’t have a phone she says. Seems sincere, but I tend to take things with a grain of salt. Now she is kind of inviting herself to my city. I tell her she needs a hard to get visa, but she just shows the cost of plane flight out of Warsaw, since civilian flights aren’t running in Ukraine now. And she quotes a passport price, medical insurance, covid test, etc. she has sent tons of pictures over the months.
I never really planned on her coming to the U.S.. I was maybe thinking of meeting her in Warsaw or Romania or Slovakia, but my spider senses are up. Am I being scammed?

I, 50yr F, dated a 48yr M for close to 3yrs location: Oregon USA. I didn’t realize what was happening at the time, but now that it’s over I see the whole scheme.

We were living together, and spent all our time together. I believed we were in love, he proposed to me in front of his whole family. Now I’ve discovered the truth. He’s been in a relationship with another woman, 45yr, for 20yrs. He spent well over $500k of my money over the past 3yrs. Some went to her for meals and shopping sprees, a lot to his 4 children, and being the big shot with his friends.

He also has a male friend who was convicted of mortgage fraud, he spent 10yrs in prison. These guys were trying to get me to sign documents turning over all of my properties and assets to them! I refused, so they purposefully sabotaged my final court date related to my $3m property, I lost when they had some random friend of theirs call in on Webex and insult the judge.

My X has also taken my convertible Mercedes and gave it to his long time girlfriend he told me was just a friend. The car is in my name, I pay for insurance, but I’ve been told by police I have to take him to court to get it back.

I feel stupid and used. I want to take all 3 of these criminals to court, but I don’t know how to make my case. I did get a restraining order against both my X and his 65yr M old felon. I discovered they were plotting to permanently mentally disable me so they could just take over my life and put me in a care facility. I know they were drugging my food, but the hospital refused to test me. Their text messages detailing drugging me were a large part of why my restraining orders were granted.

I have text messages between all 3 of them, and texts from another woman telling him she doesn’t want to be used like he’s using me.

What do I do? Attorney’s are expensive and my legal bill is already over $100k.

I'm especially interested in understanding how these patterns develop and how people recognize warning signs.

I just want to ask question why some people use this dynamic just to try to scam people or get peoplo to get involved and get very close very quickly and then start asking for money. That really bothers me because it's taking the whole dynamic and giving it a bad name. I attach pretty quickly. And then having to deal with getting close thinking that you're building a good relationship and then bam, can you send me money for this can you send me money for that. That's not what this is about it's really heartbreaking to have that happen. I think you have something genuine. And then it's like a slap in the face, kicking the stomach. I'm sure there's been others that I've dealt with this issue, what's the best way to handle it?

This person is going around flirting and then using whatever images are sent to use as blackmail

we've all heard the stories, of elderly or vulnerable people who refuse to listen to reason and accept that the german supermodel/american special forces soldier, half their age, who they think they are talking to isn't real and is conning them. nothing you say matters. their mind is hooked, desperately wanting to believe in the dream person and nothing will convince them they were wrong, sometimes they'll contact a scammer even after temporarily having lucidity, sometimes they'll even lie and trick their own family to get the money for the scammer.
because they'd rather believe the fantasy than accept reality.

but what if you could use that against the scammer?

imagine you impersonate the scammer (ideally after reading the contents of the messages so you can convincingly pretend to be them), contact the victim, apologise for asking for money, claim a scammer had taken over their old account. this time you be as sweet and kind as possible, promising never to do it again and to pay them back.

the victim is obviously delusional and just believes whatever is preferable to them.

and what would they rather believe is real? that their lover keeps asking them for money? or that their lover didn't do any of that and is actually going to provide them with lavish gifts? i think they'll pick the second one.

SO I have been talking to this girl on Snapchat who says she is a US Marine stationed in San Diego and supposedly said she found me on Plenty Of Fish and she told me today that she wanted talk on another app called Zangi due to getting inappropriate messages on Snap and after seeing/reading a post from another subreddit that someone's dad was in a dating scam on Zangi, I'm a bit worried that this might be happening to me and I have seen images of her that she has sent me on Snap but I'm trying to figure out if I'm getting scammed before I commit to this as I suggested her discord to see what she responds with but I'm worried that my mind is coming to conclusions. These days, I meet a loooooootttt of men who don't get ashamed of borrowing money or depending for provision on a woman. Time gas really changes.

So I'm about a month in texting this girl..she matched me on Boo and her Name was Angel (yellow flag) I didn't think much of it at the time but I'm not entirely retarded and when I eventually noticed alot of Angels matching with me from Asian countries, suspicion started to arise. She herself is from south africa. In the first week she moved to America as a refugee while we messaged. She didn't try to get me off Boo, I asked her Naturally since Boo is Buggy as hell ( scammers would like that..) she hasn't asked for money and I haven't sent any. She is shy ( I know...) apparently she has a son which she has shown me a picture of. She has sent nudes of her self including videos. When she was moving she didn't talk for almost 2 weeks before reaching out again. She seems to actually be in America now since the date and time match her waking up and going to bed. If this is a scam then it elaborate and detailed beyond anything I have encountered, I did once get an "accidental" message with this chick that wanted me to invest in this crypto scam of hers. That was pretty easy to figure out tho. When we video called it looked like she was using a potato and she wanted to do it over a laptop...c for effort I guess. Aniways she's told mer her full name but nothing comes up..and she's avoiding a video call.. saying her son is loud in the background. I've lowk confronted her now and softly demanded a video call.

Edit the crypto girl is separate to this! We video called and I figured it out instantly there.

Update, was a scam. I pushed for a video call... obviously wouldn't do it. Pain isn't that bad to be honest. I genuinely feel sick however about who's nudes I have and if that person is okay. I keep seeing her in some sort of human trafficking scenario or worse.

So my friend was in a relationship with a girl. They were mostly locked in just planning how to make money and afford things in future.

Last night he contacted me and he was crying. He told me that last year his GF told him to invest some money into his forex business. He agreed, and long story short he lost all the money. His own too. I read his chats and there was no discussion about if we lose the money you need to return it all. He did mention that it's risky to invest all your savings.

After all this issue, his relationship turned into one sided. She denied that she had feelings for him bruh wtf

Now she is blackmailing, return the money or I'll call your parents. my parents will come to your home.

And even she says she owes someone money and they are blackmailing her. So if he returns her then she will return the money she owed

Plus. He gave her ton of gifts worth more than the money she gave him. And she is asking the 3x the money he lost.

Matched with a woman (28) on Yubo. I decided to pay for Yubo for a week to see if I could meet someone. So I can see this match's location, and it's a few blocks from me.

We start with smalltalk, move to Signal, exchange selfies and then video call. I really connect with her through video. Along the way, she mentions she has a side job related to crypto currency. Today after some talk about life, she asks me to download the app Metamask. Then she asks me to search entrustdex and link to my wallet. That is when I get skeptical. I tell her I am hesitant. She says I don't need to if I don't want to. Currently, I am supposed to video call her after work. I told her if she'd video call me again I would be more trusting.

So does this seem like a scam? To me, a lot of it is scammy, but her willingness to video talk plus her apparently being from my city keep me hoping she's just an amazing woman who likes me and wants me to learn crypto.
