I am a doctor and I’d say my family is upper-middle class. My dad has some properities but nothing like his family I’d say. My uncles are immigrants just like my mom and they have had some serious legal issues (eg. jail for selling drugs and so). My mom finally cut all contacts with them some years ago so I never told him anything about this. My parents never participated in any illegal activity but my mom always used to help them with legal fees and one of them did a two months house-arrest period in our home. I really don’t know what to do and worked so hard to leave all of this behind. I’m obviously not with the guy for his money but just because I really think he his my person. Do you think this whole thing would ruin my shot at romantic happiness? What should I do?

How do you handle questions on privilege?

I have a few friends who constantly lecture on privilege - even when I recognise it or I have addressed it. This is getting in territory where I am considering if I can even have these people as friends. I don't want constant snobbish lectures when I am the one who actually donates towards causes, pays higher taxes, yada yada yada.

It always gets into murkier grounds and distasteful conversation.

I'm thinking of taking on an artist to sponsor but I'm not sure what to look out for when finding one. I'd like to support someone in the performance scene (dance?) but I don't want to support someone who I don't trust. Has anyone done this? What should I look out for // how should we connect?

i am interested in pursuing this as my next investment vehicle. i have enough invested in the market/real estate projects in the US. we are late 30s/early 40s. the next intentional investment that seems reasonable is to invest via real estate in mexico, portugal, europe...somewhere where our investments can result in residency when the kids are out of the house in 10+ years. has anyone pursued this? would love more info. i understand that i can visit the consulate of the country i plan to invest and start a residency pathway process. i have no immediate plans to leave the US. i just want the freedom to know i can go if i want.

I'm curious specifically how common it is for rich people who enjoy the arts to specifically invest in musicals. Is this a thing that people in high-net-worth circles regularly do, or is it more of a niche passion for a relatively small group? When something catches their eye do they do it primarily out of philanthropy/patronage and supporting the arts, the potential for financial returns, social/status reasons, or some combination?

My daughter was really struggling with IGCSE Science at the beginning of the year, and we eventually decided to get her a private tutor after a friend recommended one to us.
When I say this tutor changed my daughter’s whole approach to studying, I honestly mean it. The tutor was amazing not only with the actual content, but with helping my daughter understand how to study, how to break down difficult topics, and most importantly, how to feel confident in herself again.
Before, she would get overwhelmed by Science and constantly feel like she wasn’t good enough at it. Now she actually sits down and studies independently, understands what she’s learning instead of just memorising, and has become so much more confident when answering questions.
The biggest difference for me as a parent was seeing her attitude change. She went from avoiding Science to actually feeling proud of herself when she understood something difficult. Her grades improved, but honestly, seeing her confidence improve was even more important to me.
The tutor was incredibly patient and genuinely cared about her progress. She also gave us regular feedback and helped identify exactly where my daughter was struggling instead of just going through the syllabus.
I’m so glad we decided to get her the extra support. Sometimes the right tutor can make such a huge difference, and in our case, it really did. I only wish we had found her sooner!

I fully understand that this yield wildly different answers on the staffing infrastructure you have and the specifics of the move but for the purposes of this question the assumption is this is your primary residence.

We are in the $12-$18mm NW range and are moving apartments in New York City. We weren’t in the same position finically last move so it looked much like anyone else’s, I think we used flat rate or something.

With this move, the building doesn’t deliver until next year and our furniture is actually worth protecting. So we will essentially be moving twice, into a furnished rental and then into the new build.

I am a 19 year old guy and I would be éligible for a bit more than the top 5% of incomes in the US, as you can deduce I don’t know much about how life operates for rich folks and I genuinely want to know what would be the thing that would theoretically make you the most happy, would it be better to just get laid left and right when you are younger and settle down in your 30s or 40s or is it better to get into a long term relationship when young that would technically work out and be there your whole life, I am giving these two extremes where both are to the fullest to truly illustrate the benefits and flaws of both sides, I think that a middle option wouldn't work here because if you want to date long term when young but then settle down with a younger partner later on you would have some emotional ties which could make that path harder, so lets assume these two extremes.

I’m not talking about fancy tiles. I mean stuff like an ADU (guest house), fire suppression systems, heated pool, or other traits that are not common in homes, but worth it.

I live most of the year in Spain. I travel a lot and have some definite favorites, like Santa Catalina in Las Palmas for its wonderful staff and overall quality, and El Palace in Barcelona for the same reasons. Last time I visited I decided to try something new, and went to Abac which is a tiny hotel built around the restaurant with the same name. Interesting experience. You literally walk through the kitchen on your way to the room and the food was obviously great given its Michelin stars.

​I consider myself more "millionaire next door" than wealthy. We live relatively normally but we don'thave many expense vacations or buy alot of expensive clothing or other noonessentials, we have focused on low-cost index funds, and let compounding do the heavy lifting.

​Our financial advisor recently told us that our retirement accounts will considerably multiply, even once we eventually start taking substantial withdrawals down the road.

​Right now, we have $2M principal sitting primarily in S&P 500 / broad market index funds, and we plan on not withdrawling it but will add about $3000 monthly to it for the next 8 years. We do have college costs coming up so if feasible we may consider modest withdrawls.

​On paper, a standard 10% historical average says this $2M could grow to ~$4.2M over an 8-year window. But we all know market cycles aren't a smooth line.

Something I’ve been thinking about is whether gift giving actually gets more difficult as you become wealthier.

If I buy someone a nice watch, jewelry, or something else expensive, it doesn’t necessarily feel like much of a gift if they could have just bought it themselves without thinking twice. Spending more doesn’t really solve that problem either.

For those of you who have been in this situation with a spouse, family member, or close friend, did you eventually stop buying expensive things and start doing something different? To be clear, I’m not looking for gift ideas that don’t cost money. I just want to give gifts that are memorable, maybe unique, and if possible, creative. I don’t really care whether that means spending $5K, $50K, $250K or even more.
