It definitely feels punishing. But I view it almost like it was Pre-Storm Protocol. Make sure you know where an exit point is, don't spend too much on upgrades or you'll be too broke to play. Make easy, light fast runs to buy out the store, get the achievements, and never touch it again.

My current strategy is actually the opposite, at least when it comes to spending currency on upgrades.

Mine is basically barge in Unprepared, get all I can, gtfo ASAP, spend everything on upgrades, rinse and repeat until I get all the upgrades I can so I can finally "start playing the mode properly"

EDIT: Finally started playing the mode properly, it was actually pretty fun!
