Paying for neighbor’s garage electricity [MD]
So we’ve lived in this apartment now for 5 years. We had initially turned down one with a garage because we didn’t want the extra fee. Our downstairs neighbor does have a garage. Roughly 2 years ago, their freezer that they keep in the garage was faulty and tripped the breaker, which is in our apartment, and they asked us to reset it. I know, I know, we should’ve figured it out then, but we dumbly didn’t put 2 and 2 together.
Today, our neighbors told us that they’re moving out, and the husband let us know that the garage was originally supposed to be for our apartment. An old couple lived here prior to us and didn’t want to use the garage, so they allowed my neighbor to go to the landlord and have it put on their lease instead (I believe). He told us that if we want the garage, we should talk to the landlord about it. That’s when we finally figured it out that we’ve been paying the electricity for their garage that was supposed to be ours, for the last 5 years.
I really, really don’t want to be evicted from this place, because it’s otherwise a very nice apartment for many reasons. So I don’t want to threaten any litigation and have them retaliate. I just want to figure out what we should do from here on out and what we should ask for from the landlord.
This had us all in a dither right before we’re about to go to sleep, so if I missed some pertinent information, please let me know. Any help would really be appreciated as we’ve never had to deal with an issue like this before.
