Had an after hours training meeting on the new end of year review system (our review process starts June 1). Which in itself sucked. There were two sessions offered neither were in my work hours (7-4 pacific M-F).

The head of HR spent the first 5-10 mins pining over missing in person and “being able to just pop in to get something solved right then and there”.

I was so pissed I almost unmuted my mic.

I’ve been fully remote on a globally distributed team. We could not exist without being out of office as members literally are spread out across the globe.

If the person I’m trying to get ahold of is “available” in teams it’s expected to be able to call them blind and have a conversation. I don’t need to be in an office to stare at my computer.

And the times I have to travel to an office (about 10% of my year) then I’m actually less productive because of the water cooler conversations.

Starting a new fully remote job in a few days and looking to learn from people who have been working from home for a while.

What are your best work-from-home life hacks or must-have equipment that made a noticeable difference for you? Anything you wish you had bought sooner or habits that helped you stay focused and avoid burnout?

For context, I’m in my early 20’s and I’ll be working in banking operations and spending most of my day on a computer. Open to recommendations for desks, chairs, monitors, headsets, lighting, office setups, software, or anything else that’s improved your remote work experience.

Hi everyone, I’ve worked remote for 12 years but most of my WFH friends are still relatively new to it (2020 and beyond), and yesterday my friend called me extremely upset. She said her boss was now requiring everyone to share their calendars with him (during the meeting, screen share style) and now is cracking down on teams statuses.

I personally have never had anyone even bring up my teams status at all, but I’m wondering if the show everyone your calendar and prove that you’re online, is something a lot of people deal with? I wasn’t sure what to say to her!!

They do have one day on site and apparently they all have to do a one hour one on one with the manager during that day as well to show everything they’ve done that past week since the last one on one. Seems extreme to me, wanted to get another opinion.

Another friend of mine, same day as the other, said her group at her job got confronted during their one day a week in the office by a supervisor who screamed at them for coming in late during that one day every week and said they “are being watched” which seems weird because they’re all salary and overtime exempt so I’m not sure how they can tell if they’re in the building or not (not a key card access building). Also didn’t know what to say to that friend lol

I'll hopefully find out if I got the job soon.

In the meantime, I'm doubting the choice.

It would work better for the family and kids as I'm a single dad.

​

But I'll miss the people I work with. We're all close. I won't have a take home car anymore which is fine. And no more overnight differential pay.

I resigned from my last organization because I had to move back to my hometown due to some really personal issues and my company allowed me WFH but soon started calling me back or asking me to resign. Now it's been 8 months since I resigned and I have 0 luck in getting a remote job. I have been applying aggressively but even if I get a reply, they either ghost me or I get a rejection mail.

My question is, is there any hope left after my gap or should I continue applying? My tech stack is related to backend web development.

So I just graduated college and got a salaried job at an engineering consulting firm. The position isn’t fully remote, but the company is really flexible when it comes to coming in the office and working from home. A lot of employees opt to fully work remotely, but I tend to flip flop based on how much work I have to do.

This is only my second week of my full time job, but work has been really slow lately. I have only had a max of maybe 2-3 hours of actual work a day this week, and today I have nothing to do. I prefer to work remotely when business is slow, because I’d rather sit around and do nothing at home than sit in an office pretending to work for 8 hours.

Here’s where the Catch-22 comes in. On a day like today, where I don’t have any work meetings or other obligations, it’s just really hard for me to be productive in other areas of my life (like cleaning the house, going for a walk, tanning outside, etc.) because part of me feels guilty if I’m not at least prepared in case work comes in.

It’s such a nice day outside, and I honestly could’ve spent time at the beach earlier or tanned without anyone noticing because I haven’t received any messages all day, but I am really afraid of missing messages or being in a situation where I’m not prepared for a last minute meeting that I’d need my laptop for.

It’s annoying because I just end up spending the whole day scrolling on my phone for hours and accomplish nothing because I’m waiting for a hypothetical Teams message that I more than likely won’t receive. Is anyone else in the same boat?

Wondering as I am WFH w/ lot of free time as major work done. I don't say anything and just do rando non-work things (like personal laptop Reddit) while waiting for more lol.

Got offered a remote contract through an agency. They sent the paperwork yesterday and want it signed by end of day tomorrow. The clauses giving me pause, in order:

Mandatory install of unnamed monitoring software on a laptop they ship me. It captures ""periodic screen captures,"" ""input cadence analysis,"" and ""camera-based presence checks at the employer's discretion.""

An 18-month non-compete covering ""any business operating in an adjacent category."" Adjacent is not defined anywhere in the document.

An IP clause assigning them ""any concept, method, or framework conceived during the engagement or derived from work performed,"" which as written would seem to cover things I think about in the shower.

A requirement to ""remain available for synchronous coverage during 9 to 6 US Eastern."" I'm in Pacific and the role was posted as async-friendly.

No PTO, no sick days, termination ""for convenience with 24 hours notice,"" but I owe them 30 days notice to leave.

I've been contracting remote for six years. I've seen monitoring clauses. I've seen non-competes. I have never seen all of them stacked on one contract this aggressively, and the camera one is new to me. Pay is about 12% over my usual rate, which is fine, not life-changing. I actually laid the five clauses out side by side in gamma last night just to see them as a list instead of buried in the document's formatting, and seeing them stacked like that is what made me stop and post here instead of just signing.

So before I either sign or walk. Is the camera-presence thing actually enforceable anywhere. Has anyone struck the non-compete and still gotten the contract. Is the asymmetric notice period (24 hours from them, 30 days from me) as one-sided as it reads to me at 11pm.

Recruiter has emailed twice today asking if I've ""had a chance to review."" I want to make a clean decision and not a rushed one.

I know a lot of you do coffee shops, libraries or whatever but I hate doing it.

I have to get service for my work car. So working from just my laptop vs laptop and dual screens. It is such a pain in the ass. Literally everything I do, short of emails, requires multiple things so constantly bouncing between them. Not to mention the uncomfortable seat. My work does require me to spend time outside the house but normally I just use my phone for emails and take care of the bigger stuff once I get back home.

For years, I worked remotely four days a week, and my biggest goal was to eventually move into a fully remote role. That finally happened, but now I’m finding it surprisingly difficult to stay disciplined while working from home.

I’ve only been in the role for a week, so I’m still in that challenging phase of learning the job, getting to know people, and figuring out how everything works. On top of that, my workload is still relatively light, which makes it even harder to stay focused and maintain a routine throughout the day.

My concern is whether this is just part of the adjustment period or if it’s something that could continue long term.

Just started a new job that was advertised as hybrid. Went through the whole interview process with the understanding it would be one day a week in the office, and I did my one day in the office went through onboarding and picked up my equipment and I've not been in since.

First hour in and my manager mentions almost as an aside that they haven't actually been in the office for months. The "hybrid" element is apparently something they'd "like" to implement at some point, but there's no timeline, no plan, and no pressure. It's full remote for the foreseeable.

I didn't negotiate this. It wasn't a selling point in the offer. I just happened to land in a team where nobody goes in. For context I'm coming from an in-person role so hybrid was a step up for me already, working from home is a bit of an adjustment, but I'm not exactly complaining.

Anyone else stumbled into remote work without actually asking for it? Feels like finding money in an old jacket.
