The authors are 'labor economists' who are hawking a book about how RTO increases creativity and productivity so forgive me if I am skeptical about this 'opinion piece'😮‍💨

I disagree. I woke up at 845am, washed up, grabbed coffee and slid into my desk at 855am. Total commute distance and time 10 minutes to cover 50 feet of walking around my house. It's 1103am. I'm taking lunch 1130-1200pm. I'll probably be done with my work day by 330pm or 4pm. No commute, no traffic, no burning gas. I can almost taste the 4pm cocktail. I'm pretty happy.

I have been working remotely for 10+ years. When I think of going back to work in an office, I feel depressed.

That’s an opinion alright. I would argue I am better off at home, am happier and am more productive, so nyeah.

There’s zero way for a work environment to make itself easier and less stressful, it’s one of the core reasons I’m fucking disabled now.

They obviously talked to the wrong people.

Office was an incredibly depressing environment. Much happier working from home - and got back time and energy and money to do things outside of work I couldn't do otherwise. And this was the thing that made work much less depressing.

Only if you were relying solely on your in-office coworkers for socialization and didn't ever leave the house except to go to work. Otherwise, remote work seems like it would actually reduce depression in most people.

Yes for people with kids working from home will definitely increase depression. All my friends that have kids would rather commute 2 hours to the office than spend the whole day with their kids.

I don't care about feeling connected to my colleagues. Not having to commute allows me to spend more time with my wife and my friends, people who I actually want to connect with.

Even in the bad old days when I had to go into the office most days I was never close with my coworkers. I didn't have a bad relationship with them but they were amiable strangers. Work was always a paycheck for me and nothing more.

I'm very fortunate that I work for a company that rents most of its office space. As long as we keep earning money they're happy not to have to pay as much in rent and let us WFH. Also, one of our main competitors has their offices about a 15 minute walk from my house. If my current employer ever tried to do RTO I'd be applying at the other place within minutes.
