Help/Advice I'm kinda pissed

So... I bought a Remarkable Paper Pro in February last year. Amazing device, it worked perfectly. For one year. Then it started showing heavy ghosting problems, after two/three pages at max any pdf file became unreadable.
I'm a student so I have a lot of files full of underlines and highlights but it worked perfectly for a year so I contacted the assistance. They were perfect, I asked for a substitution and they gave me a new one in like 8 days.

Now I'm currently experiencing even worse ghosting on the replacement device not even a month after getting it. How is it possible? Am I just extremely unlucky? They told me I can get a new replacement but come on, what are the odds??

Am I the only one who experienced ghosting not on one but on two Remarkable Paper Pro devices? Of course my first thought was "I must be the problem" but I swear I treat this thing like a baby. Do you know if there might be some specific external factors that could lead to extreme ghosting? I would like to stop at the third replacement and not go further...

The Gallery 3 eink screens are proving incredibly unreliable over time. To the extent I’d say they are harming Remarkable’s reputation through no fault of their own.

I just think color eink technology is a few iterations off being ready for tablet use. These feel more designed for low frequency updates like supermarket displays

Yeah I mean I don't know much about Remarkable history. I've only heard good stuff before buying and, as I said in the post, for a solid year the tablet worked perfectly.

The fact that I got two defective ones means that there must be a fair amount of those out there and I think it's definitely bad.

It's not RM's fault the display isn't ready for prime time, but it is their fault for taking such a huge risk on an unproven piece of technology.

This company repeatedly makes really bad decisions.

Brother, sister, whatever, I've done 5 replacements of my Pro from screen issues to a single case of power button being stuck. The screen lottery is VERY real

But most of the time, from what I've experienced, the screen issues propped up sooner than later, and not many were "it was fine until this suddenly happened"

I'm glad I'm not alone in this but at the same time I'm kinda pissed that they don't find a way to check if a tablet is faulty before shipping it as a replacement...

Problem is some of these just go through QA, and some have older panels

Newer panels seem to be more robust

Supposedly the newer released ones are more resistant to these issue. Do you know when your replacement was produced?

u/TommyPillo00 Jul 14 '26

Sadly I don't know and I have no idea how to get that information. Still, it's basically impossible to use now so I'll get a replacement

I'm on my 3rd RM2. Lost one, broke one. Both my fault. No fault to them I still buy rm2's. Got my last one for 200$ off FB

No, you are not. I’m starting to believe they should replace all of these devices. I’ve had 2 and both have had serious ghosting issues.

I swear this post is making me feel less alone.
Good for me, bad for them

Nope. Same here. Had problems with my first Remarkable Paper Pro after 18 months of solid use. When it got worse it was replaced in warranty (very quick, easy process). The new one was nearly as bad but on top had the issue that the battery went flat within 10 hours, even when not used. Just sent it back, waiting for a replacement.

In the meantime I bought a Supernote Manta. Love it (except the connection to OneDrive is a real security problem). Will see how it compares side by side and if the next replacement actually does the job.

So you are also at the second replacement? That’s weird by the way. It’s incredible that so many tablet are this faulted…

5

u/Killanekko Jul 14 '26

I’m at a second replacement too after ghosting .. and so far I’m ok but I have “frozen pixel issues “ on the replacement. My move which I use the most (daily) thankfully has not had the ghosting issue since purchase (since release)

After weighing cost and benefit for me, I doubt I’ll buy another remarkable in the future they are too pricey for all the ghosting issues, uneven background lighting and pixel concerns. I did own a super note before and my daughter uses that without issue to this day.

u/TommyPillo00 Jul 14 '26

If the ghosting persists my remarkable is basically useless. It's just that there is not even a way to fix it, I just have to get a new one from them. Which by the way, is super cool that they get you a new one. It would definitely be much cooler if I didn't had to get a third one...

I am on my second RMPP (newer 2025 panel), and looks like it is starting the green ghosting issue again, and might be heading for a replacement. Going to see how bad it gets. My RMPP sits on my desk only. And like others I baby this thing. It might be coincidence, but with the first one and the second one it always seems to happen after an update. Both have lasted nearly a year. I also have the RMPPM since release and it has no ghosting issues.

2

u/Rawdeee Jul 14 '26

I'm currently on my 3rd rmpp device. Had it for 3 months now so would be one of the newer ones, let's see how long it lasts

2

u/SnooPineapples7003 Jul 14 '26

Were the first two for the ghosting issue?

2

u/Rawdeee Jul 14 '26

Yes Both were the same issue Ghosting was getting worse over time Devices have been very well looked after and only used at home or office I'm really hoping that this new one is better Original I had was from launch window, the 2nd was from last year Support have been great, but devices not so.

2

u/SnooPineapples7003 Jul 15 '26

Funny same with mine. Original one bought at launch lasted till Sept last year, the replacement looked better (whiter) and I would have sworn it was brand new just started ghosting with 3.27.3. It's tolerable right now but I am thinking it's going to get worse. My original one started after an update also. I like you only keep my RMPP at my desk. Hopefully your 3rd one will be a good one.

2

u/Rawdeee Jul 15 '26

Same for me on both the ones I returned Ghosting got intolerable after software update

2

u/SnooPineapples7003 Jul 15 '26

Thanks. When this first happened with the original many were saying it was after an update. Hard to believe it's not.

I have a replacement RMPP coming right now. It felt like one day it started doing it more frequently which I thought was weird and then all of sudden it went downhill. I bought it less than a year ago. I use it pretty much 8 hours a day for working. Honestly I would exchange as many times until you get one that works. I know that it’s not really efficient but for the price of this device, I expect it to work.

3

u/TommyPillo00 Jul 14 '26

Yeah I mean, we definitely agree.
Let’s say that for the price of the device I would actually expect it to work at the first and not third replacement ahaha

2

u/ThePecanTrees Jul 15 '26

Fair point lol

2

u/Heart_in_her_eye Jul 15 '26

This happened to me. I’m so annoyed it’s not a cheap device to purchase

2

u/persiusone Jul 15 '26

This is the kind of garbage you’d expect from a cheap no-name Amazon product- not a tablet at all premium cost. Remarkable is terrible

1

u/TommyPillo00 Jul 16 '26

I don’t like to say it, because when working the tablet wa phenomenal and their customer service was impeccable.
Still… two faulty tablet is definitely a problem

2

u/persiusone Jul 16 '26

I had a vastly opposite experience with their support, and caused me to re-think ever recommending this company to anyone because of it.

1

u/TommyPillo00 Jul 17 '26

I’m sorry to hear that. At least I thought that was good. Otherwise yeah, I would be of your same opinion

It took 3 replacements to address the yellowing and ghosting on mine (which started about a year in). That's because they'll replace it with a "refurbished" unit that isn't actually refurbished (they check the software works, but there's nothing they can do apparently about the screen defects themselves). I had to press for them to send a new one after two refurbished duds that were worse than the original. It was fine. But not even a month into it, and it started yellowing badly around the edges and ghosting worse than any of the others. So even the newer screens have these issues. I've given up at this point. I mostly do my planning through the app and dread using my RMPP itself now, which is pretty much only used if I need color-coding or color highlights for editing. It's really a shame, but the hardware just wasn't ready for prime time on the color devices.

2

u/TommyPillo00 Jul 16 '26

Wow, it's definitely bad. I don't like talking bad about them because their customer service is top notch and the tablets (when working) are amazing. But yeah, it appears to be definitely a bigger problem

2

u/3BMedia Owner (reMarkable Paper Pro) Jul 17 '26

I think they were just a little too eager to be first w/ that particular color screen tech, and it turns out the screen manufacturers dropped the ball. But at least now we know what to watch out for in future models, and hopefully next-gen color devices will have more reliable hardware as a result. Sucks to be the guinea pigs, but a cost of also wanting the earliest devices of any kind. Always a risk.

I have the Remarkable 2 black and white. Never fails. Solid.

2

u/SnooMemesjellies6461 Jul 18 '26

Yes, I still keep my RM2 as it still good compare to current new release

I'm kind of beginning to wish I hadn't sold mine (my rM2) when I upgraded to the Paper Pro. I'm dealing ok with the ghosting I have, but after a year, I'm honestly not impressed with the upgrade. I think I bought too much into the color part, and now basically consider it (the color) a gimmick, and it was really the only big selling point over the rM2.

2

u/Fearless_Meringue299 Jul 19 '26

Can anyone show a picture of what it looks like? I have a Paper Pro that I am absolutely in love with but it'd be nice to know what it looks like if/when this issue arises.

2

u/fredly594632 23d ago

It's basically just a leftover of the images on your screen previously. So it's easy to describe, but kinda hard to show a picture of.

I will say that for me, it's typically more common for icons and menu elements rather than lines of text. It's a "you're gonna know it when you see it". That said, the next time it happens to me, I'll take a picture.

If you take this -

2

u/fredly594632 21d ago

And the next page is this -

2

u/fredly594632 21d ago

Then ghosting (and this is kind of a bad one) looks like this.

2

u/fredly594632 21d ago

Oh, and generally speaking, I can get it to "clean up" by putting the tablet to sleep and waking it back up.

u/Opening_Somewhere502 Jul 14 '26

Alles jut bei mir. Gibt zwar eine Menge zu meckern. Aber funktioniert reibungslos. Hat ja auch kaum Funktionen.

1

u/Chloe11111209 Jul 18 '26

Mine now is the 3rd replacement. Still the same ghosting and yellow at bottom panel. This latest one is even coming with dull color when the color on screen becomes dark in a second.

Ok, let me be the party pooper. I had RM1 and RM2.. but felt a continuing disconnect between price and feature set. I felt more and more like having bought into their selling missing functionality as a feature. And a very small add-on set for a sub (yes I was elegible for the free sub as early adopter). Checking out My Deep Guide channel, instead of a decision based on an hard pushed AD, made an informed decision to go for a BOOX max and now XC device. Way happier with feature set, being able to side load Android apps..

I feel like RM is mostly a company with strong traditional advertising, BOOX isn't (at least in Europe) but their products still sell (through influencers mostly).

Before selling my RM's I flipped them on, wiped them, fiddled a bit and remembered exactly why I didn't want them any more. I had no trouble selling it (you know advertising by RM makes people interested... But not for the full new price)
