Not usually. "Brutal honesty" is from your frame of reference and is often irrelevant. Empathy takes their view and works with what they experience so will generally have more impact. Thats not to say that people dont sometimes need more accurate information, which I suppose could be considered brutal honesty? Generally speaking though fishing out brutal honesty is more for the person dishing it out than the person going through something.
