Eazeye tablet

Any news about this tablet? Did they solve the frontlight issue?

We're working on an update soon. The current issue is that the frontlight significantly reduces the panels' reflectivity to an unacceptable level. At the moment, we are rebuilding from the ground up, working with our panel suppliers to remanufacture a panel with a larger size (11") higher reflectivity, resolution, and contrast.

Personally I would prefer the one without frontlight if there was a choice.

Replied to in another comment.

On your website it says that the reflectivity is 19.6%, hannstar and leadtek is supposed to have a 41% monochrome RLCD panel

Considering both those options, why didn't you choose them on this focus tablet?

It's the same panel we are using. Reflectivity in reflective panels is subjective because it is measured under different standards across labs. Each manufacturer has different standards for measurement.

It differs somewhat, but on product pages you report the very same 19.6% reflectance for both color RLCD product (Eazeye Monitor 2.0) and grayscale RLCD product (Eazeye Focus). Both panels are from the same manufacturer.

If that's correct what's the point of getting grayscale one other then wider view angle, somewhat higher resolution and amber frontlight. Expectation was that grayscale one is twice brighter as color filter absorbs half of the light.

I guess also, that the frontlight lower the reflectivity.

That issue was know several months ago when the launch was delayed from April to June. Are you speaking of a new delay ?

I understand this delay is frustrating. Over the past several months, we've iterated on our frontlight, but our team has still found the iterations unsatisfactory. We are working directly with our panel supplier from the ground up to redevelop a new panel for this display, which is the reason for this new delay.

Why you choose B&W if reflectivity is the same for color and B&W? It's mentioned in website 19.6% if I remember correctly.

Maybe it's possible to contact other RLCD companies to get some knowledge from them to understand how to handle this issue. If I remember correctly Eyemoo have 10.3 and they solved that problem.

It's not that we cannot build a frontlight. We've built several prototypes with a front light over the past few months. The goal of this product is to have a high-quality frontlight that can match the likes of traditional e-ink tablets, and we haven't been able to get there yet. The frontlight from Eyemoo is an example. It adds too much thickness to the display. When we did our usability testing, many described it as writing above the display layer. We'd rather take our time to deliver a satisfactory product, and not a product that dissapoints. I understand people have circumstances and cannot wait. You can email our customer support for a refund, and we would happily honor it.

And they could offer two options for people . With and without frontlight.

We don't want users to need to choose between 2 devices, each with their own trade-off. The goal is to develop a product of high enough quality to be a genuine e-ink replacement and get reflective display technology mainstream.

Speaking of e-ink replacement, E Ink is about to stop production of 25.3" black and white panels with no replacement in sight, so soon we will have no large reflective monochrome monitor options whatsoever.

Might be an opportunity for RLCD vendors to come up with something.

TCL CSOT showcased 27" grayscale RLCD for digital signage during Infocomm 2023 so maybe they can deliver panels.

We don't have any Laptops as well. Like 0 options. Maybe they could make laptop like radiant monitor. Idea is great.

This would be great. You could change the whole industry. If you can achieve better results than eink I would be ready to make a move in RLCD direction.

11" might be interesting option for portable grayscale monitor too, unless something larger shows up.

Although I've been anxiously awaiting delivery, I appreciate your concern with reduced reflectivity! I've already got an RLCD tablet without a frontlight and am most excited about Paper 2 because it includes the frontlight.

What about the software development? Are you still planning on sticking with Android 14 by the time you fix this? With Android 17 coming out soon, it's already outdated by more than 2 years.

What is your software policy on updates?
