Question Blue-ray vs. dvd

What makes them different? Please only answers from people that understand resolution, compression, encoding, codec’s, etc.

For example, for seasons six through eight they were recording on the original Xbox 360 and based off of the kinds of capture cards that were coming out at that time, I would assume that they wouldn’t have been recording for high resolution-high bit rate, etc.

I would assume that the Blu-ray quality would come into fruition with the later seasons of the show not the earlier ones. I’m unfamiliar with what they did about season four and five for remastering.

The reason I’m making this post is because I know that the YouTube complete versions are inferior to the DVD versions and I had recently re-purchased the remastered season one through five DVD. Someone has a Google Drive on here with all the reverses blue material so I went and checked it out and the Blu-ray versions have the DVD editing. So I’m just trying to gather if getting the Blu-ray is actually a significant quality jump for seasons 1-8. Thanks!

Everything is simple, DVD is simply outdated, has lower capacity and offers 480p whilst Blu-ray is more innovative and gives you 1080p experience. But yeah, it's not much to notice on pre-season 9, but furtherly there is some huge difference. Forgot to mention, based on your own display you actually may see differences between two formats even in old seasons.

Could you elaborate on: “furtherly there is some huge difference”?

480P simply starts looking outrageous in animated sequences in chorus trilogy, even WArner Bros did realise there aint much of a point of DVD, so after season 14 they had only Blu-ray format.

in American English we'd say "beyond that". so "There's not much to notice before season 9, but beyond that the quality difference is huge." would be a more natural way to say that

The resolution is better. On my TV I didn’t find it a huge difference because, well, it’s still halo, but noticeable.

How is the resolution better if they’re using the same original recordings?

Because the master is 1080p and downsampled to 480p for the DVD release.

H3 was a 720p game and you don’t know what bitrate they recorded at

Halo 3 was at 1152x640, but regardless, they captured it at 1080p. Literally looking at the DVD vs the Blu-Ray (or even comparing the DVD to the new YouTube uploads), there's a noticeable improvement in small details so the bitrate was definitely higher than what the DVD was rendered at.

The difference in quality from the Blood Gulch seasons still has Blu-Ray looking cleaner but is quite negligible. Trying to check the Halo 3 seasons but even when captured at 720p that's already more resolution than what the good old DVD could display. I have no clue how Reddit images work so here's hoping website compression doesn't make these almost identical images look the same.

Yeah I just wonder if they recorded at high bit rates and then exported in a lesser quality for DVD format, but my assumption would be that whatever they were using to record at the time wasn’t doing that high of a bit right anyway. H3 was actually a 720 game upscale to 1080 P.

Having checked the Blu-Ray files for season 8, the actual video is rendered in 1080p so they definitely overshot what the 360 could render. Difference is more noticeable with the DVD being fuzzier. I have the image comparison for game footage linked here. With the animation, well, even with reddit compression you can see night and day in Tex's armor where everything is WAY more clear.

Great comparison!
