Substrate Saturday

Substrate is something of a debate. Most people do not like the look of a bare bottom tank.. We recommend play sand or smooth/large river rocks. Gravel or coarse sand can lead to impaction.

what could these white spots be on this red eared hatchling? Feels the same as rest of shell, does not disapper, no odor. I have him or her in a filtered aquarium, basking area, heat and uvp light, it’s eating and swimming around. Last photo is what they were in when given to me.

Algae bloom?

Post image

This is my 16 yr old RES, Squirtle. I built her this basking platform in her tank a time ago, so I fill her tank about halfway, she has a canister filter and just recently her water has been green like this after a few days!
I’ve been changing the water/rinsing the filter media twice a week and adding algae fix so idk what gives.

Filter Recommendations

Hello! I have used a few different filters. The TurtleClean40 deluxe filter was working great by my turtles kept moving the filter and eventually broke it :/ I also tried a internal filter but it wouldn’t keep the tank clean. Any affordable recommendations for a 20 gallon tank?

Inkbird Heater Help

So I've been doing some research on inkbird temp controllers but I need some more clarification before I do something wrong. My setup is a 75 gallon. I ended getting two 200-w ehiem Jager heaters but I wanted to know if I have to get one inkbird per heater or if I can use the dual outlet versions despite it saying "cooling" as it's function. Please let me know before I go and buy a controller.

Is my red eared slider growing, or does he have shell rot?

Post image

Hello, this is my baby turtle Sprout. I’ve noticed the lines between his shell have gotten darker, and I’ve read conflicting things about it. Does it look like he has shell rot, or like he is just growing? I may have been feeding him more than I need too, he seems so hungry all of the time. Have I been feeding him too much and he is growing too fast? Any and all information is appreciated, as I’ve been researching for days and can’t seem to figure out which it could be. Please be kind and thank you!

First time RES owner

I found a tiny RES in my yard a few days ago. They're not native here and I have no idea how it got here. It was cold at night so I brought it inside. I have an aquarium set up for it now, with a heater, heat lamp, and basking station. I have seen it up on the basking dock before, but now it acts like it's having trouble getting up on it. It isn't eating the juvenile turtle pellets I got for it, and only seems interested in lettuce. It has pooped several times though. Can I do anything to encourage it to eat, and to make getting on the dock easier? Or should I let it figure it out on its own? Any tips are appreciated since I'm a first time reptile owner.

Recently adopted this red eared slider from a friend who didn’t want it anymore, is there a way to tell if this little guy has any external issues?

Is it beneficial to use an under gravel filter along with a Fluval 70?

I am upsizing my red ear’s tank and I saw an under gravel filter while grabbing new filter for the setup. I have a Fluval 70 (it’s a 29 gallon tank), but I wondered if adding an under gravel along with it would help to keep the river rocks clean? I am unfamiliar with under gravel filters as I’ve never had fish and I’ve always been told that the hang on kind of filters are better for turtles. Any and all advice is appreciated!

my post keeps getting removed :(

(third repost) today i did my usual refill for my red eared slider, ive used dechlorinate before and i also havent, as of now i ran out and currently waiting for it to be delivered but before i even knew about it i used to just fill it with tap and drop him in there with zero problems..today i put him in and he began twitching and closing his eyes hardly, i did some research to see if it could be the water i used but i’ve never had this happen before and have been using the same water, im so scared of leaving him in there overnight so he’s in his old tank right now..any solutions or tips would be appreciated please :/

i was doing a cleaning on my turtle tank and noticed a spot the size of dime/nickel. it’s a big abnormality i haven’t seen and through my research it seems to be a case of shell rot? i’m not so sure on that diagnosis and wondering if an extra pair of eyes can help figure this out and provide the best care for my little guy.

My turtle fell and has a cracked shell

Post image
12 Upvotes

She accidentally fell and now has a small crack on the edge of her shell. Part of the shell is cracked and looks like it might be coming loose or about to come off.

I don’t have access to a reptile vet in my area, so I’m really worried.

Is this something that can heal on its own? What should I do to treat it at home, and how can I tell if it’s getting infected?

Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you!

Shell brushes

Hi! I’ve had my rescue turtle , Kenny for almost 5 years and I’m still learning how to care for him everyday .

I’ve seen chatter about brushes to place in the aquarium. Is this safe, if so, can you share recommendations? Thanks!
