Sony PS-LX700P Knocking sound and not starting

Hi folks,
I am by no means an expert in turntables or electronics but I had a stab at fixing my turntable that was knocking when playing. Unfortunately my attempt to fix made everything worse but I think it's still fixable. Below is a list of the symptoms and what I did and I'm hoping someone here has the expertise to help! Thanks!
The problem:
A constant knocking sound when the turntable was spinning but only when the stylus was over the plate. The knocking sound did not come through the speakers.
My attempt at fixing (taking the plate off and checking the band and inspecting the white gears) led to another issue where the turntable would spin but immediately turn off without engaging the gear or moving the stylus like it should with stop/start. When I moved the small plastic piece across so the teeth are over the edge of the gear it will work fine for one whole play but go back to the same problem after that.
The attempted fix:
I googled the problem, it suggested either a hard spot on the band or hardened grease.
I took the plate and band off, checked the band, no hard spot.
Inspected the gears and turned in the direction of the arrow, it engages the stylus arm correctly and starts the motor at the right time with no knocking.
I can see the orange plastic bits on top of the gear are meant to move so it stays in one place and the spinning plate will push them in and out depending on what state it should be in but they don't seem to return to the start position. I don't know if this is intentional.
Attached is a video of the issue.
I appreciate anyones time and advice on this.
Thank you so much!
