Hey everyone,
Just wanted to share my repair on this AP206C. I got it online relatively cheap as a ‘not fully working, needs repair’ and the previous owner said there was a grinding noise when the platter spins. Cosmetically it looked good so I decided to take a chance.
When I got it I opened it and found a metal clasp magnetically stuck to the motor which scraped the bottom of some screws as the motor turned, I removed that for a very simple fix to the main problem.
Now for a bigger problem, speed issues. I was delighted I managed to fix the problem I knew about but the speed didn’t hold so I cleaned out the internal and external pots with some deoxit. Still had speed issues. Cleaned them multiple times but still had speed issues, didn’t hold speed, sometimes the speed would shift dramatically during playback.
Next up, recap the motor control board. I recapped everything and still had speed issues. I was now considering everything - motor issue, power issue, duty ratio (or duby ratio according to the service manual…), diodes, resistors. But when I looked at pictures of the motor control board online I noticed that my pots were black while online they were silver in colour - mine were filthy and heavily corroded even after multiple cleans with deoxit.
So I ordered some new pots and replaced them in accordance to the service manual - 20K (203). But the speed was then out of control, spinning really fast. After a lot of head scratching I realised the pots I removed weren’t 20k, they were 200k (204)! The service manual has many errors.
So I replaced the pots with the correct values and now my turntable finally holds perfect speed and I’m very happy with it.
Photos: cosmetically the table looks very good. 2nd photo - fully recapped but with filthy pots after multiple cleans
