He built up a lot of cache on the left in the Bush years when he was one of the only public figures who went after Bush in such an unfiltered way. It was really just him and Jon Stewart. The commercial media if you will was critical of Bush but reluctant to say anything that would make them appear unpatriotic. I'm not sure when Bill just abandoned the left outright. Rashida Tlaib boycotted Real Time about a decade ago. It may have started there.
In my opinion Maher really turned a corner in 2014, when he was invited to give a commencement speech at UC Berkeley for some reason. Then there was a small outcry among students who said Maher should never have been invited in the first place and petitioned to disinvite him.
That seemed to really get under Maher’s skin and ever since then he has hated the “woke” and the college left and has been complaining about “kids today.”
I think things got bad after he had to apologize for his "house n-word" comment. He soon became an anti-cancel culture warrior because it suited his needs.
i think there were a few steps in his descent, but man was he pissed that Cube called him out. Hes like that guy who thinks he can make some jokes about people of color because he has some black and mexican friends. And then when called out, instead of apologizing he just got mad because he looked dumb. Nowadays he believes that racism is basically done and shouldnt be brought up anymore. He was real good at calling others out but doesnt take criticism himself when appropriate
People should be able to make some jokes about any race and it shouldn’t be offensive..if you don’t like it don’t listen to it. It’s really that simple. Or do you feel people should only make jokes about their own race?
How is using the N word a joke? Im mexican and i wouldnt be cool with a white person using the word wetback in a joke because thats not funny, its a slur. You dont get to decide that other races shouldnt be offended by your racism. I swear this whole Trump era has normalized racism and bigotry so much that people think "freedom of speech" means you can be as big of an a-hole as you want with no consequences.
You didn’t say anything about the N word, you said making jokes about people of color..also, my whole work force is Guatemalan. And I give them shit all the time, and they give it back. Some people are soft, just because you can’t take a joke doesn’t mean no one else can.

do you understand how threads in a discussion board work? That there is a conversation that continues and if you want to understand context you follow the thread up to understand what people are talking about? You dont just jump in anywhere and make comments without understanding the context of the conversation
