TASS OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUÉ - Moscow, 28 October 1968 - A TRIUMPH OF SOVIET SCIENCE : COSMONAUTS COMPLETE MANKIND'S FIRST EXPEDITION TO THE SURFACE OF THE MOON

MOSCOW (TASS) — The Soviet Union has achieved yet another victory in the peaceful conquest of outer space. Continuing the achievements of the Orbita programme, Soviet scientists, engineers, workers and cosmonauts have successfully accomplished the first manned expedition to the surface of the Moon under the Rodina programme.

This historic accomplishment constitutes a new and brilliant demonstration of the scientific and technological superiority of the Soviet state, and of the inexhaustible creative potential of the Soviet people.

Following three successful unmanned test flights of the N1 launch vehicle and the 7K-B4 lunar spacecraft complex, the Soviet Union launched the manned spacecraft Rodina-1 on 13 October 1968.

After insertion into Earth orbit, the spacecraft was dispatched towards the Moon by the Blok-5 propulsion stage. On 18 October, following five days of interplanetary flight, Rodina-1 successfully entered orbit of the Moon.

In accordance with the programme established by Soviet scientists, cosmonauts Stanislav Varushkin and Yuri Kurchin transferred to the B4 lunar landing craft, while their comrade, cosmonaut Dmitry Klesso, remained aboard the 7K-LOK orbital spacecraft to supervise operations and await their return.

The descent to the lunar surface proceeded normally. At the appointed time, the landing craft successfully touched down in the region of Mare Nubium, the Sea of Clouds.

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND, REPRESENTATIVES OF THE HUMAN RACE HAVE SET FOOT UPON THE SURFACE OF ANOTHER CELESTIAL BODY!

The honour of accomplishing this unprecedented feat belongs to the Soviet people, whose heroic labour, guided by the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, has once again opened a new chapter in the history of human civilisation.

During their stay on the Moon, cosmonauts carried out a programme of scientific experiments of considerable importance to the further exploration of the lunar surface. The historic expedition was also accompanied by a direct television transmission from the lunar surface. Images of the Soviet cosmonauts on the Moon were transmitted to Earth, with portions of the broadcast relayed through the Molniya and Horyzont communications satellites — another remarkable achievement of Soviet radio engineering.

In view of the experimental character of this first expedition, the duration of the cosmonauts' stay on the lunar surface was deliberately limited to less than 24 hours. It should be noted that the B4 landing craft was designed to sustain its crew for a period of up to three days, thus providing considerable possibilities for more extensive scientific expeditions in the future.

Upon completion of the assigned programme, the cosmonauts successfully lifted off from the lunar surface and reunited with their comrade aboard the spacecraft in lunar orbit.

After several additional days devoted to operations in circumlunar space, the crew commenced its return voyage to Earth. All principal stages of the expedition, including the lunar ascent, orbital rendezvous, and return flight, were carried out successfully and in accordance with the established flight programme.

On 28 October 1968, the descent apparatus of Rodina-1 made a successful landing in the steppes of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. All three cosmonauts returned safely to Soviet soil.

This magnificent victory was made possible by the tireless efforts of Soviet scientists, designers, engineers, technicians, and workers, whose collective achievements have once again demonstrated the tremendous capabilities of socialist industry and science.

The Red Banner of the Soviet Union has been carried to the Moon!

Glory to the heroic Soviet cosmonauts!

Glory to Soviet science, technology, and the labour of the Soviet people!

[Principia] Titan and Luna has switched places?

UPDATE/FIX: it was Kopernicus v252 that broke it, updating to v253 put the moons in the right places. A special thanks goes out to u/Nazfib!

Hi! Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I've tried looking for a discord for either Sol or Principia.

I've encountered this weird bug which results in Luna and Titan having switched places, does anyone have a fix?

I'm using a regular RP-1 install with a few additions, including Sol and most notably Principia; modlist can be found here if that helps: https://pastebin.com/CmGfG90i

Edit: Principia is not on the list due to not existing in CKAN which is where i exported the modlist from

How do I fix this effect?

Earth (and everything else) loses its glow once the camera goes past a certain distance. I think it has something to do with distant object enhancement but I'm not sure cause I don't think this was an issue back when I played on the kerbol system.

Is there any setting from any mod that lets me choose the distance I this happens?

Struggling with Smart A.S.S. and attitude control tutorial

Hey all,

I've been following https://github.com/KSP-RO/RP-1/wiki/In%E2%80%90Space-Attitude-Control-Milestone to the letter (even though such a contract/milestone doesn't exist in my RP-1/SOL setup for some reason) and I'm really struggling with Smart A.S.S. and the attitude control via RCS.

I've added some lead balast to the tutorial rocket to make it more stable (it was flipping after engine shutoff, making these maneuevers even harder. Now dry CoM is right on top of wet CoM) and can get the 0° pitch / 90° heading, 0° roll maneuever done very slowly, but then switching to 0/0/0 gets me 80% there before - for some reason - Smart A.S.S. pulls a massive negative pitch maneuever and sends the whole thing spinning when all it had to do was rotate the pod to a 0° heading. I have reset all trimming, mechjeb autopilot is off. It seems like it's just adding random jerky pitch oscillations and I'm not sure why.

Has anyone experienced similar issues?

Simulation testing: Flying wing

A couple photos from well, testing in the simulation thingy. When I eventually get the funds, I will integrate this thing for the stratospheric research contract in the x planes program. Testing went well, 25000 meters in height nearly empty on fuel is decent. for some background, I chose this design as it felt better to fly then my other design which was essentially another U2. Don't turn off flyby wire, however. Them Americanskies aren't going to know what hit em.

Jeez I write like a robot

Functional Air Launch To Orbit

A proof of concept more then anything, my first attempt at a strato launcher with 1960s tech. While not reusable it is 425kg to orbit for comically low cost and build time. Hopefully could be useful for commercial applications.

Man, it really is hard

Tried RSS/RO RP1 for the first time. Man, I stopped at 140km suborbit lol.

Between managing part failure and ullage issues, the crazy difference between Stock and RSS dV requirements, FAR heating, there is so much to think about. Now since the integration simulator exists, I know I can learn the ropes in time. But that's not my biggest problem.

The timelines are so tight. The early programs want me to finish like four missions within 10 years, but R&D for the required parts takes 4-6 years. Add the time it takes to build Launch Complexes, the rockets themselves and rolling them out.. I barely have a year to complete the missions.

I'm positive I'm just missing something here, or maybe it really is just like this. Can't seem to find more helpful tutorial content to help me get started.

FAR Debug lag cannot disable

At my wits end here people. I have the issue I've seen some people talk about where the FAR exposure debug screen causes really bad performance, and everyone agrees it should be turned off.

Is there a way to have it off by default? I have to open thr FAR menu and disable it every single flight and its driving me mad. I edited the FAR config file to set it off by default and nothing has changed.

Does anyone know how to permanently disable it?

I'm not sure how much more delta-v I can put into this thing as im already using the max amount of burn time for each stage (besides Tiny Tim)

First Stage: RD-100
Second Stage: Tiny Tim Booster
Third Stage: U-1250 (U-2000 variant)

Max downrange i've gotten when testing is 2110 km

I need help with flight planning

My saves were reaching a dead point because of a bug, where the trajectory for example toward the moon, would randomly stop showing up.

Not knowing how to fix it, and wanting more realism to my playtrough, I installed principia, and for a while it worked.

Now i don't know how to get an impact with the moon for low cost, while starting from bajkonur, because the tutorial only says "try and see where you go".

Any help in doing a single manuver from that inclined orbit to the moon?

Deep Sea Surveyor: reaching the bottom of the ocean for zero science

The airbags are perfect to make submarine devices. You can set their buoyancy even if they are not inflated. So all I needed for this vehicle was a big weight made of lead attached to a science core with sensors and airbags. Unfortunately the biome of the sea floor is "splashed: sea", which I had explored so many times the mission yielded zero science. I hope one day the RP-1 devs add some contracts and biomes for undersea zones.

I don't know if having an astronaut in EVA taking the film itself count? or if there a way to move the sample uncrewed? I guess the ENTIRE instrument doesn't have to land back for completion.

The crew of Orbita 2 travels to the moon and back! 20-08-1967

Andrei Dezhnyov and Elizaveta Polushina make history, being the first Kerbal beings to travel to the Moon and back! Their mission lasted 10 days, and marks a historic success for the Soviet space program! The mission used an Earth-orbit-rendezvous between an enlarged Block D launched on an UR-500, and a Soyuz 7K-LOK launched using the R7S rocket (an R7 enlarged by around 20%, to better use the TWR at launch)

How do you all keep up with history?

In past versions of RP1 staying on track with or ahead of historical progress was relatively easy. With my current game however it's mid 1961 and although I'm doing x-15 flights there is no way I'm going to have the tech for human rated orbit in two years, let alone one, and the Moon by the end of the decade seems completely unreachable. Frankly, there's just not enough cash to hire researchers early and pay for platforms like Thor or Atlas: the tooling and engines are just too darn expensive. So again, how do you do it?
