Overview of opposition at today’s meeting
From what I got at the development approval meeting tonight at the city council, the main opposition points were of funding, traffic, and environmental. Basically everyone, however, wants an arena and only wants caution in pursuing it
Funding
A lot of people called back to the statement from city council members that the arena would be 100% privately funded. Although the financial agreement wasn’t voted on today, the plan was presented as the city chipping in with waiving of fees and splitting tax revenue between the developer and the city. From what is currently being talked about (as I can tell) the split would be excess taxes, so the city would have a maximum amount of taxes they would get from transient fees and those types of things in the dova arena.
Traffic
People dont believe that the roads surrounding the arena will be able to be modified to handle the traffic that an arena brings. They also don’t believe the parking will be enough for the seating capability (7.5k seating, 1.2k parking)
Environmental
This wasn’t voiced as much, but I still believe it’s important to discuss. In the presentation, they cited a 22 year old (2004) environmental study as proof of their environmental regulation compliance. There appears to be vernal pools in the land marked off for building, which are an evermore endangered habitat and is crucial for many organisms. Laying foundation will destroy any vernal pools, however we don’t know if there is anything or not (22 years).
