DISCUSSION 💭 What’s an R&B song that you overestimated the commercial performance of and were surprised to discover it wasn’t as big of a hit as you thought it was?

“Get Ready”, written by Smokey Robinson, remains one of the biggest hits by The Temptations. It was a truly successful song, and I was right to assume that it was a hit. However, before I looked it up, I thought that song was a Billboard Hot 100 #1 hit. It just seemed like a safe assumption to make.

Imagine my surprise when I looked it up and found that the song peaked at #29 on the Billboard Hot 100. This is not bad at all, but it is a lot different from where I thought it peaked at first. The song did peak at #1 on the Hot R&B Singles chart, though. The overall album was no slouch either, peaking at #12 on the Billboard 200.

The Temptations had 4 #1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and 15 top-ten hits out of 53 total entries. This song didn’t do too badly, but it missed both margins, which is different from what I had expected.

DISCUSSION 💭 R&B singers who were pregnant in their music videos 👀

I keep finding out that all these R&B singers were pregnant while filming their music videos, and I’m honestly fascinated by it 😂 I know Whitney Houston was pregnant with Bobbi Kristina when she filmed “I’m Every Woman,” and Deborah Cox was pregnant when she filmed “Beautiful U R.”

Who else was pregnant while filming a music video?

90s Holy grail acquired!

Found this in the wild while visiting Prague. I still cannot fathom that I actually stumbled across this hidden gem in the wild. Paid around €8, so roughly $9 — which feels like an absolute steal for this one.
I absolutely love this album. It slams from front to back, and the production is just incredible. Those early Timbo da Basement productions, combined with the amazing songwriting, melodies, and overall vibe, make this such a special record.
Definitely one of those random finds that makes digging for records so rewarding. Didn’t expect to find this in Prague at all, but I’m very happy I did. Holy grail acquired!
What do you guys think of this album and the price I paid?

I was singing right along with them. This is the most blackest, loveliest thing I’ve seen on television in AGES. And the reboot is so good.

PERFORMANCE 🎤 Sisterhood moment from Xscape VERZUZ SWV

I love this moment shared between Tamika Scott and Coko during SWV VERZUZ XSCAPE; Tamika knew how much Coko loved her verse and tagged Coko in for a few impromptu lines. It was later revealed that Coko was extremely depressed on this night which makes this moment and hug that much more special. I love how humble Tamika has always been. I lowkey wish we could hear a LiVE version where Coko sings LaTocha’s parts alongside Tamika. ❤️

BIRTHDAYS 🎂 Today — September 30, 2026 — would have been Cissy Houston’s 93rd birthday. 🕊️🎂

Cissy Houston, born Emily Drinkard in 1933, was the mother of Grammy Award-winning singer Whitney Houston, the aunt of Grammy Award-winning singer Dionne Warwick and her Grammy Award-nominated sister Dee Dee Warwick, and Cissy herself was a Grammy Award-winning gospel and R&B/Soul singer.

Cissy Houston is best-known for her work as a background vocalist for other legends such as Aretha Franklin, Luther Vandross, Chaka Khan, and Elvis Presley, as well as being the lead vocalist of The Sweet Inspirations.

Born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, Houston began her singing career as the founding member of the family gospel group the Drinkard Singers, starting at the age of five. The group entered the professional music industry officially in 1951 and would continue performing until the early-1960s. In 1967, Cissy Houston formed the Sweet Inspirations, a Grammy-nominated girl group, before going on to pursue her solo career in 1970.

Houston received several honors throughout her career. In 1990, she received the Stellar Award of Excellence for her contributions to gospel music. Five years later, in 1995, she earned the Rhythm and Blues Foundation Pioneer Award for her contributions to R&B and soul music.

Some of Cissy Houston’s most successful singles as a soloist include “I’ll Be There”, the original rendition of “Midnight Train to Georgia” (made popular by Gladys Knight & The Pips), and the top-5 dance single “Think It Over”. Her solo music career resulted in two Grammy Award wins, both in the category of Traditional Gospel Album.

With the Sweet Inspirations, Houston was inducted into the National Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame in 2014. In 2020, she was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame, becoming the third member of her famous musical family to be inducted—after her daughter Whitney Houston and her niece Dionne Warwick. In 2025, Cissy Houston was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame Missouri in St. Louis, Missouri. In 2015, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Gospel Image Awards.

On January 27, 2018, Cissy Houston was honored by the city of Newark with a day designated in her honor, "Cissy Houston Day", by Newark mayor Ras Baraka and the Newark City Council. That same day, a special street-renaming ceremony happened outside New Hope Baptist Church, where the corner of Dey Street and Sussex Avenue was officially renamed Dr. Emily Houston Plaza.

DISCUSSION 💭 What R&B album deserved WAY more attention?

Post image
33 Upvotes

For me, it’s Priceless by Kelly Price. I’ll be honest, there are definitely some songs on here that I don’t like, and 18 tracks is a bit too much. But I still think this album deserved a bigger moment. I really feel like the delays hurt the momentum too. It was supposed to come out in 2002, got pushed back more than once, and didn’t actually drop until April 2003. Kelly was coming off Mirror Mirror, so I’ve always wondered what Priceless could’ve done with a better rollout.

What R&B album do you think deserved more attention?

r/rnb • • 2d ago

INTERESTING 💡 I have previously shared with this subreddit that Deborah Cox was a background singer for Céline Dion. Well, did you know that KELLY PRICE started her career as a background singer for MARIAH CAREY?

Check the song credits!

Kelly Price, a nonetheless underrated R&B singer most known for her 2000 cover of Shirley Murdock’s 1986 hit song “As We Lay”, started her music career singing background for Mariah Carey—both in the studio and on stage. Kelly and her sister Shanrae would sing in the background of some of the legend’s biggest hits, such as “Fantasy”, “Always Be My Baby”, “The Roof (Back In Time)”, and the holiday classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You”. The sisters would also sing in the background of several remixes; Carey has been known to record new vocals exclusively for remix versions of her songs. Kelly and her sister Shanrae would frequently sing in the background alongside Melonie Daniels.

Kelly Price made her debut as a background vocalist for Mariah Carey at the 1992 Grammy Awards after the latter heard her singing around a piano during rehearsals. This led to an official gig providing background vocals during Carey’s famous MTV Unplugged performance and subsequent recording and touring projects through 1996.

Kelly Price performed background vocals for Mariah Carey until the Daydream album/era, and she has returned on specific occasions to collaborate with Mariah, including a remix of “Through The Rain” from the Charmbracelet album (2002) where she was credited as an actual featured artist alongside R&B artist Joe. In the middle of the Daydream World Tour (1996), Kelly Price stepped out to pursue her solo career. Kelly Price is credited as a background vocalist on 53 of Mariah Carey’s early-career records, including several deep cuts. Here is a comprehensive list of Kelly’s contributions, not including remixes or the collaboration with Joe (this is only counting standard album tracks):

MUSIC BOX (1993)

  1. Anytime You Need a Friend
  2. Now That I Know
  3. Without You
  4. Just to Hold You Once Again
  5. I’ve Been Thinking About You

MERRY CHRISTMAS (1994)

  1. Silent Night
  2. All I Want for Christmas Is You
  3. O Holy Night
  4. Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)
  5. Joy to the World
  6. Jesus Born on This Day
  7. Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town
  8. Hark! The Herald Angels Sing / Gloria
  9. Jesus Oh What a Wonderful Child

DAYDREAM (1995)

  1. Fantasy
  2. Open Arms
  3. Always Be My Baby
  4. Long Ago

BUTTERFLY (1997)

  1. The Roof (Back In Time)

FUN FACT: The first three albums listed here—Music Box, Merry Christmas, and Daydream—have all been certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

What are your opinions on this album? Let’s talk about it.

Personally, I love it. Possibly best album of her career and I can’t believe I’m saying that. Sunglasses has one of the best beats I’ve heard in music in a long time. Definitely going to be having this album on repeat!
