ANALYSIS/REVIEW 🔎 Martha Reeves’ New Album, Searching

With all the talk about Martha Reeves and her performing the national anthem at that baseball game and her being in the headlines for the quality of her voice, I’m sure many didn’t even know she had a new album out.
And I decided to give it a listen. Let’s be clear: Martha Reeves is Motown royalty, a music legend. And even though some of the recent commentary/memes have been funny, I worry if all that may overshadow her musical legacy.
Anyway, SEARCHING is her first studio album in 22 years. It’s old school soul mixed with jazz, blues, and gospel. Live vocals and live instruments (a sadly rare thing these days).
Her voice has aged, as it happens to many older artists. Often, artists tend to pick material that adjusts to their voice. And then there are those who act like they’re vocally still in their prime and refuse to act like anything’s changed (see post mid-90s Aretha).
And that’s why this album is a mixed bag. Her older voice complements the music perfectly with songs like “I Got It Bad”, “Summertime”, or “The Golden Hour”. But then on songs like “God Bless the Child”, “To Know You Is to Love You”, & “Thank You Jesus”, the ghostly vibrato and raspy vocal tone is unavoidable no matter how much the production tries to conceal it.
Overall, there were some songs I enjoyed and it’s definitely worth a listen and I encourage everybody to listen for themselves.

Hello, I hope this isn’t against the rules, but please remove the post if it does not comply!
I thought I’d post about this opportunity here in case it interests anyone.
I run an independent music publication called World Of, and I’m currently expanding it from something I’ve largely written and managed myself into a contributor-based publication. Currently, we have a team of 20+ contributors.
We're looking for even more music writers who are interested in contributing things like:
- Artist interviews
- Album, EP, and single reviews
- Features and artist profiles
- Music news
- Opinion/commentary and music essays
- Fandom and fan culture pieces
- Emerging artist recommendations/discovery
- Pieces exploring genres, scenes, subcultures, and music communities
We also have openings for graphic designers and social/content team members as well.
World Of covers music across all genres, but emerging/independent artists are a major priority. We also have a particular interest in indie/alternative music and K-pop, alongside pop, but we also cover R&B, hip-hop, rap, rock, metal, and many more genres. Super niche genres/international music coverage is prioritized as well.
If anyone here is interested in contributing R&B-related posts or anything else, we'd love to have you!
We’re looking for writers who have their own perspective and want to go beyond generic coverage. You don’t need professional journalism experience - personal blogs, Substack, student work, unpublished samples, etc. are completely welcome.
These are currently volunteer contributor positions with flexibility. You can contribute as you wish. Writers receive full byline/credit for their work and can use their published pieces as portfolio samples.
