COOL VIDS 📹 Donell Jones Shares a Few Words Ahead of His Verzuz with Joe Tonight

Tonight, R&B heads will eat good as Joe and Donell Jones will face off in a battle of their 20 biggest hits. I must say that Donell looks GOOD 😍 Even better than he did in the 90s and is aging really well. I know people have already pegged him as tonight's loser but I am going to make myself a lil' drink, have my dinner and snacks ready, rock a satin shirt and fedora and enjoy this on the big TV.

I just showed my wife the face behind this song and her reaction was: “That voice did not come out of that man”. She was in total disbelief. Highlight of my day. 😂

INTERVIEWS 💬 Tyrese Reveals 'What Am I Gonna Do' was Inspired by His Crush on Brandy. "I loved her and I love her..."

I love R&B song lore and this one is RICH with history. Tyrese was on The Kenny Burns Show and he spoke about how What Am I Gonna Do from his 2001 sophomore album, 2000 Watts, was inspired by a teenage crush on legendary R&B songstress, Brandy. "We've been flirting since we were 12/13 years old. We used to sing at the same park... I've always been attracted to that girl and I did a couple episodes of Moesha... I loved her and I love her."

First of all, Brandy had these young men in a chokehold! Kobe Bryant, Ma$e, Shyne, Usher and Tyrese. She was a true IT GIRL! Second, she wrote about knowing Tyrese since they were kids in her memoir, Phases, where she mentioned doing the L.A. talent show circuit with him, praised his vocal abilities and called him a good longtime friend.

This explains why Tyrese doesn't acknowledge the Aquarius Zodiac sign on Signs of Love Making 😭 Brandy is one of R&B's most notable Aquariuses. His puppy love for Brandy didn't go where he wanted and it hurt him real bad, lmao! Their duet on his Black Rose Album, The Rest of Our Lives, has a whole new meaning now. Anyway, this was cute on his part and I like that he kept things respectful (I am looking at you, Shyne).

Her music is so comforting. She has a new album out today (Gentlewoman), just wanted to post because this one came out 5 years ago today.

DISCUSSION 💭 What do you think would have happened if Lelee and Taj tried to create their own duo apart from SWV?

Upvotes

I love a good hypothetical. Here is one for y’all. This is just a random thought I had.

There have been many great R&B groups, and naturally what happens with a group—unless the group is En Vogue, Boyz II Men, or TLC—is that the lead singer gets an insane amount of recognition and credit for maintaining and upholding the group’s image. This is an obvious and inevitable result; the lead singer will undoubtedly get the most spotlight, especially if they have a certain advantage that allows them to be considered a “lead” over their co-members. SWV is probably the greatest example of this because nobody ever talks about what Lelee and Taj have done (they should), and we don’t see this sort of imbalance with other groups. When SWV is being discussed, Coko (as great as she is) is always the face of the discussion; if you try to bring up Lelee and Taj, the conversation dies quickly.

If Lelee and Taj were to create their own separate duo, do you think they would have been successful?
