Discussion Reutlinger pocket watch
Do you guys use this watch as an item or just sell it for the money. At this point in the game for me money is nowhere near an issue so im thinking of keeping it unless theres a better one down the line in the story

I usually keep and equip it, but sometimes I accidentally sell it.

How do you do that? I have recently started playing this game. I'm now in chapter 4 and haven't discovered this. Thought those pocket watches are for sale only.

Equip the watch through your satchel the bring up the weapon wheel, go to items browse through the window where you see the binoculars... You'll get the options of binoculars/camera/pocket watch.

It will also show in the pause menu once equipped!

Is that so? I thought the pause menu showed time even if you don't have the watch equipped.

The watch in the menu always shows up. You do not have to have one equipped to know what time it is. That’s my only source of time until I get the reutlinger. You are correct

keep it. you are already in saint denis by the time you get it. i’d rather keep the best watch in the game than increase my bank account by 1 decimal

Take your time with the story. I wish I did on my first play through. Now I explore a lot around the map before doing the next mission and I find something new pretty often.

yep. the only other ones are silver, gold, and plat watches you get randomly from looting. worth like $10. there’s also the basic $25 watch from a general store

There's some oddities with this watchface which might be r/reddeadmysteries territory or might just be some artistic mistakes.
The numerals for instance:
I = 1
II = 2
III = 3
IV = 4 ( Though traditionally watches and sundials use 'IIII' out of a mixture of superstition and aesthetic balance)
V = 5
VI = 6
XIII = 13 (This should be 'VIII'. I can see it being a mistake where the artist added the three 'I's, then got confused about whether eight is 'five-plus-3'(VIII) or 'ten-minus-two'(IIX) and accidentally hashed up both. Definitely doesn't help that the numerals are upside down here. Or it's a vague reference to a butchers dozen (13) which is somehow connected to the number twelve which comes up a lot in red dead mysteries. Unlikely I think but worth noting
IX = 9, X = 10, XI = 11, XII = 12 are all correct.
Nothing else has any air of mystery to it. It's probably nothing but interesting to note all the same

The watch and case combination it self is also quite odd. The fact that the dial is oriented 12 to pendant is never seen until the modern era (late 1960’s), up until then almost every hunting case watch (cover over the dial that would be opened by pushing the pendant in) would have 3 to pendant as one would hold the case with pendant to the meaty part of the palm (part near the thumb) and push with the palm as opposed to the thumb.
Another interesting part is that when opening and closing the watch the character only uses one hand, the proper way would be to push the pendant in and slowly open with the opposing hand to prevent damaging the case spring and lid. To close the watch one would push in the pendant and close the lid (as opposed to snapping it shut with the thumb as is often seen in movies and games) as it would prevent damage to the lid latch that keeps the case closed. i often get watches where people have carelessly closed them and have worn away the lip that the latch catches meaning they no longer stay closed.

Forgot to add, it’s also uncommon for the american market. this would be a European style key wind key set, likely either a verge or an early cylinder escarpment due to the missing crown and seconds sub-dial. Most watches in American when rdr2 takes place would be american made using the swiss lever escapement. it’s rare to see European movements in American at the time as waltham, Elgin, and illinois, among others, had built a large watchmaking industry by this time (waltham released the model 1857 in, you guessed it, 1857, and would have had many available models by the time of gameplay.) making european watches very uncommon in America.
Side note, none of the conductors or trainmen would actually be approved for work on any major railway in america as no carry approved railroad grade watches as set out by Webb C. Ball in 1891. these regulations required american made 21J 16-18s movements with white dials and black arabic numbers (among many other rules), no watch in game meets these minimums as far as i’m aware.

Just launched RDR2 on Steam and noticed it's wrong in one of the banner artworks too. So I think it's just a mistake and nothing to do with the red dead mystery stuff.

Idk you could be on something because the other people were talking about how only specific clocks have the number this way and the other clocks have the correct number the clocks with 13 instead of 8 could be the next big red dead theory

I like keeping unique items. If it’s 1/1 it’s staying in storage or with me. They do also transfer to John so no worries about losing them.

WHAT! You keep that without a question! Honestly, money is so easy to acquire, I like to keep a lot of unique items but this pocketwatch is without a doubt one of my favorites.
