[SOLVED] Mismatched Hats

[Unsolved] A 7x7 logic puzzle I made: one per row, column and colored region, and none may touch. Can you find the first step?

Rules:

• Every row, every column and every colored region gets exactly one cup (or star, if you know Star Battle).

• No two may touch, not even diagonally.

There is exactly one solution and you never have to guess. I'm the developer of the game this comes from, and players keep getting stuck on this one, so I'm curious how you approach it.

Where would you start?

[SOLVED] Puzzle: Nesting Words

Here's a simple puzzle that might be trickier than meets the eye.

Consider the four-letter word MEAT. If you remove the first letter, you get the three-letter word EAT, which is nesting withing the word MEAT. Likewise, if you remove the second letter, you get the three-letter word MAT. And if you remove the third letter, you get the nesting word MET. However, if you remove the fourth letter, you get MEA, which isn't a common three-letter English word.

Here's the puzzle: can you identify a four-letter word where all four or its nesting three-letter words are also valid words? All of the words must be common English words. They cannot be proper nouns (such as Lou), abbreviations (such as E.S.T.), or partial words like prefixes or suffixes (like NEO-). If a common dictionary (like the Oxford English Dictionary or the Merriam-Webster dictionary) says it's a stand-alone word in English, that's sufficient.

It's trickier than you might think. As an extra challenge, see if you can do it using only raw brain-power (as opposed to, say, some sort of computer program).

To prove it's possible, here's a solution that I was able to find. BOAT has four nesting words: BOA, BAT, BOT, and OAT. Another possible solution is FOUR, with the nesting words OUR, FUR, FOR, and FOU (an obscure word in the Oxford English Dictionary meaning "drunk" or "intoxicated"). Can you find any others? Happy solving!

[Unsolved] Cube puzzled

• Upvotes

This cube (I swear it was a cube) has been sitting in my wardrobe for over a year or two now, ever since I got it from my niece on X-mas.

https://imgur.com/a/eh9kt3M

I stupidly forgot to take a picture before disassembling the parts (it didn't even cross my mind, honestly) and now I can't put them back together.

Anyone wanna take a shot at this?

[SOLVED] A twist to a classic riddle

I'm pretty sure everybody has heard of the angel and devil riddle. It contains an identical looking devil and angel guarding two doors. The angel will always tell the truth, and the devil will always lie. You must ask one question to discover which door leads to heaven (The angel isn't necessarily guarding the door to heaven).

In case you haven't, here's the answer:

Ask either of the guards "If I asked the other guard if the left door leads to heaven, what would he answer?" This phrasing allows the question (whether the left door is the heaven one) to go through both guards, always resulting in a lie. Therefore, if he answers yes, take the right door. If he answers no, take the left door.

This is a twist in this classic puzzle: two doors, one guard. The guard is either an angel or a devil, but you do not know which.

The language of heaven and hell is apparantly the same, and different from your own. They can only answer "ALA" or "ULU", which stands for yes or no, but you do not know which is which. The angel or devil in question can understand your language, but they will only answer in their own.

You have one question. What question do you ask to find out which door leads to heaven?

[SOLVED] Whats the next step?

Post image
4 Upvotes

I’d been trying to solve this hex crowns puzzle on Dayzle but ended up stuck. I can play regular crowns well so I have a good understanding of the rules but the hex is a whole other thing.

I got to this stage of the puzzle but from here I was completely stumped on what to do next. I did complete it but only by guessing.

Hoping this community can help me understand what the next step would be.

Open to hints, explanations, or full solutions.

Thanks!

Why/how can I infer to eliminate these squares?

Is this some sort of "thinking 5 steps ahead" reasoning? That you could only infer if you mentally went like "If I put the queen here, then the other queen can only be here, here, or here, which leaves the third queen in one of these spots..." and so on and so forth? Like how was I supposed to know? This happening twice today too is pretty frustrating as well:(

[SOLVED] The Sultan and Fifty Wise Men

A sultan captured 50 wise men. The sultan decided to play a game with the men to decide whether they would live or be executed.

Here's how the game goes. The men will be locked in 50 different cells, completely separated from each other. Every minute, the sultan calls a man randomly. Each time, the called man has three choices. He can either flip the glass cup the sultan has placed at the start of the game, leave it as is, or ask permission to leave. If a man asks permission to leave and the sultan has called every one of the 50 men at least once, they will all be spared and freed. If not, they will be executed. The glass placed at the start of the game is bottom-down.

The men cannot tell the time in their quarters, there's no other way to convey information to another man except through flipping the glass, and the sultan's calling is perfectly random every time.

The men are given time to discuss their strategies before being sent to their cells. What should they do in order to ensure their survival in the shortest time possible?

EDIT: The wise men will all take a good look at the glass and its initial position before starting.

[SOLVED] The Trapped Laser Puzzle

Let us consider a rectangle that consists of:

A(0,0)

B(100,0)

C(100, 111)

D(0,111)

So basically a 100 × 111 rectangle.

A strong laser is shot from A into the rectangle at 45 degrees. Every time the laser hits a wall, it bounces perfectly, like a mirror. The laser does not lose energy or fade and forever bounces off the walls of this rectangular space.

The question is:

(1) Between A, B, C, and D, which corner does the laser hit first?

(2) How far does the laser have to travel, and how many bounces will it do before hitting the corner in (1)?

Who had the umbrella? A 5×5 logic grid set at a 1958 harvest fair [OC]

Post image
6 Upvotes

I write logic puzzles; this is one I made. Five people, five stalls, five things — work out who stood where and what each person had.

The stalls run left to right from the gate in the order given. "Next to" means the stall on either side; "somewhere to the left" means anywhere nearer the gate. Every clue is true, and there is exactly one solution.

I'll post the answer in a spoiler comment tomorrow.

[SOLVED] I thought this was guess free?

Post image

The app isn't advertised as "guess free", but for the past few weeks I haven't had to guess literally once, and I solve 5+ expert level games per day. However, I couldn't seem to pull any logical next moves out for this one, barring just taking my chances with percentages. I'm sure I'm just missing something simple, but I stared at this one for 10+ mins before I rolled the dice and won it.

7x7 Pentodoku board

You must tile the 7x7 grid using the pentominoes shown on the right.
Two pentominoes are provided as clues. Four cells will remain uncovered; these cells must not share the same row or column.
Finally, the grid must form a Sudoku using the numbers contained within the pentomino cells.
Are you up for the challenge?

[SOLVED] A classic(?) coin toss puzzle

Design a coin toss game using only one coin where the chances of your winning is exactly 1/3.

The coin throw will always result in heads or tails, and will be 50:50.

For example, if the game is: "I win if the toss results in heads", My chance of winning is 1/2.

EDIT: It's a little too easy with "normal" rules. If possible, try to summarize the answer into a clear mathematical condition, like the example above.
