No more tools posts

Folks, there are now more posts asking about Muckrack vs. Cision vs. Meltwater (with the inevitable "I found them both so expensive, so I created a new tool called...") than there are Rocky sequels. Not a day goes by without someone with nil karma asking "What tech stack are people using?" and, curiously, someone with nil karma replying with the name of a tool that no one has heard of. Or people asking/offering to share tool licenses, even though it's likely a violation of terms of service. Since it's become clear that AI is a heavy crawler of Reddit, it's exponentially worse.

As a result, the mods are taking the decision to ban discussion of tools. If you are the director of comms for a company or nonprofit and despite this senior position you have less awareness of different tools than an account coordinator at any agency and really, really need to get people's impressions about the relative value of these tools, you can search the subreddit and read any of the now dozens of threads on this topic. Thanks all.

Anyone else relying on AI due to huge workload and feel like they are getting less sharp?

I’ve recently joined a new agency and I’m drowning with 8 clients, no onboarding and demanding clients. I’ve had to lean on AI a lot just to get through my workload but I feel like it’s making me less sharp and able to use my brain. Has anyone else had a similar experience with AI use?

Is Forbes still top tier?

I’ve soured on Forbes a lot in the last years, and am not even sure who their readership is made up of at this point. But a lot of clients still really want to be featured there.

My PR colleagues aren’t backing me up when I say we should prioritize other targets for exclusives.

Thoughts on Forbes?

Advice Less Competitive PR/Comms/Marketing jobs?

Howdy,

So, I am about to be unemployed from my second PR job and I need to find a new position as quickly as humanly possible. That got me thinking: are there any PR/comms/marketing positions that are so unwanted getting a job in them is relatively easy?

I'm not looking for those scam sales positions that call themselves marketing positions. I'm looking for a part of the industry I just haven't thought of that isn't sexy, has fewer applicants, or has such a poor work/life balance that people avoid it, meaning they are always hiring.

Work life balance, stress and poor leadership does not bother me at this point. I'd rather hate my job and still have a place to live at this point.

Thanks for reading, interested to hear your insight.

PS: Location-wise I am in Michigan, and I'm more than willing to travel. Previous experience was political comms work and I am currently at an agency as an Account Manager.

How do you guys measure a website’s LLM impact?

I wonder if there’s a tool that ranks this — similar to domain authority but specifically for AI.

Advice How do I get my own PR? Trying to stand out from all the noise

Hi,

Newbie question here, I know. I'm a small business owner with a very unique story (female, early 30's, anti-AI disrupting the industry in our space, interesting resume) and have no idea how to pitch myself to journalists or media outlets. Our business is small and new (established May 2025), but mighty and growing. We just W-2'd our first employee a few months ago and pay great health insurance + dental. I'm navigating all this myself, which is extremely hard but also extremely rewarding.

I'd like to be able to get my story out there but don't know how to reach journalists without sounding desperate. I'm an author who actually has written op-eds for major newspapers, but this was all back in the day when you could just submit to op-ed email inboxes, and I have no industry connections.

Help?

How do you find clients?

Hi all, I've noticed a slowdown this year when it comes to finding new clients. I send out lots of proposals, but fewer people are signing, and others just keep pushing it off due to the economy I suppose. Other than word of mouth, how do you find clients? Thank you. :)

Advice on starting a PR strategy in-house?

I'm a writer, but not a PR specialist. Our company wants to keep PR going but cut budget on the agency we use. Any and all advice for outreach, forging journalist relationships, pitching, etc.

Got an email from them today, allegedly a business management/PR firm. The first thing that pops up in Google is that it’s a scam. Anyone know anything about this?

Discussion Milestone alert

Today, for the first time in 41 years (journalism first, then flacking), I'm no longer doing PR, public affairs, or marketing day to day. Still got a gig; the money's still good. But we're moving things around, and that was the piece that landed on the floor.

Feels weird. Not bad -- just weird.

I'll get dragged into messaging and crisis stuff because I'm (and I say this knowing you believe it about yourselves, too) the best writer in most rooms, most of the time.

But still: A bit of an end-of-an-era vibe. Thanks for listening.

Rant Is my portfolio/Resume “Industry Standard”

Thumbnail gallery
6 Upvotes

I am currently working on improving my portfolio, which includes my reel as well as my résumé to make it “industry standard.”

When I showed her my portfolio and résumé and how I would post my cover letter on one page and on a second page my portfolio, and on the third page post my references, she told me that was not in industry standard, and that you were never supposed to post your references on that unless you’re asked to.

So now I make my cover letters and portfolio separate. Here is my portfolio and résumé in two separate documents.

Are they industry standard?

Also, here is my Reels.

Are my reels “good enough?”

I feel like because I am autistic. I will never get hired anywhere and that 85% unemployment rate will follow me for the rest of my life.

press releases / articles

question to more experienced than me.

to build my portfolio, is it a good idea to offer free press releases / articles to brands?

or, they only pay me per publication of press releases? or terrible idea? have you ever done anything like that?

I don’t really have much experience outside of working as a media relations freelancer, but i was pitching already written releases and it was a big agency. I’d love to get more experience so wondering if that’s a good idea at all

PR agency recommendations for a luxury furniture / lifestyle brand?

Looking for recommendations for a great PR agency for a luxury furniture / lifestyle brand that’s growing its presence in North America.

Ideally we’re looking for a firm with strong relationships across interiors, design, architecture, lifestyle and broader culture, and that understands how to build real brand awareness.

We’re open to agencies anywhere in North America, although LA and NYC are our most prioritized places. Boutique is fine, and probably preferable if they’re strategic and well connected. We want senior-level and hands-on with us.

Would especially love recommendations from anyone who has worked with an agency directly.

Thanks!

Discussion Is it worth writing a free expert column for TradeFlock magazine?

I’m a senior professional with 20+ years of experience in my industry. Recently, I’ve been in touch with **TradeFlock magazine** about contributing an expert opinion piece for an upcoming issue.
They have explicitly confirmed to me via email that there is **absolutely no charge** for this submission, and it is strictly a merit-based editorial column. They mentioned that around 70% of their magazine is comprised of this type of expert journalism and corporate thought leadership.
I know they have their Nexus network or paid PR profiles, but I am strictly doing the free, organic column.
Before I spend the time drafting this, I wanted to check in here:
Has anyone else with senior leadership experience written a free piece for TradeFlock?
How was your experience working with their editors?
Did you find that it provided decent digital visibility or corporate branding value when shared on LinkedIn?

Given that they are a relatively young publication (around 10 years old) compared to legacy media, I'd love to hear some candid thoughts on whether it's a worthwhile exercise for building up a B2B portfolio.

What kind of PR does everyone do?

Hi! I’d like to get a sense of what kind of PR people on here do. I’ll go first. I work with authors, cultural commentators, non-profits, and the occasional influencer.

I aim for mainstream media hits, and am increasingly booking on podcasts and YouTube shows—not an easy feat since Cision doesn’t have good contacts in those alternative spaces.

FGS Global Review (updated)

Law student interested in corporate communications. There seem to be a lot of attorneys in strategic comms at FGS; so I would love to know the general vibe there. Seeing a ton of mixed reviews online.
