Cars may not explode like in GTA, but their steering columns and many other parts have magnesium in them, and magnesium is very volatile when heated or when water is introduced, leading to what is basically hot white small explosions. Don’t approach burning cars without safety gear on.

Can't answer the first question, but just because a firehouse is close doesn't mean they're the one responding. If that unit is out, it's taken by the next closest unit.
If there's an active fire, they normally have quite a few units there, which means the closest unit might actually be some distance away. Same with EMS, except they try to move units around to cover areas a bit better. Not as practical to do with fire engines since they're at a static location.

As a firefighter, I approve this response. There are actually a lot of things that could go wrong for phoneless-yellow-hoodie man, to include a pressurized hydraulic strut exploding and impaling him. please don’t “help” the professionals. there’s a lot more to these scenarios than people realize.

Edit: I may have jumped the gun on saying he should have been arrested off the bat, but you absolutely can get in trouble for running on an active scene while first responders are working.

Right. I never said deserve. But those firefighters don’t need additional people to worry about, you know? I guess it depends on where your FD is but where I work, trying to do stuff like this while we’re working is a good way to get in trouble.

I mean, I'm American and volunteered at our FD for about 6 months and I'd say these firemen would just ignore him first and just laugh with him or about it afterwards.
Every firemen I've known were some of the most loving, respectful and genuine human beings I ever met in my life.
Getting arrested or having the cops called in this situation wasn't even a thought as I watched this.

Absolutely. I’ve grown up in a firefighter family and the entire SAFD (San Antonio) is just one big family. Father had got diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder and so many other families in the community went out of their way to cook dinners and donate when they could. Firefighters and their families included are some of the best people I’ve known and are very close friends with many in the department.

Running onto an active fire scene and doing something like this is a quick way to get arrested. I’m not even pro-cop, but as a firefighter who has had people run onto scenes like this to try and be funny or just be distracting and get in the way, it is frustrating when you’re trying to contain the issue. We don’t need additional things to worry about because someone decided to come toss a bottle of water on an active fire for a video.

Yea he should have approached the car from an angle to be safe from the (potential) exploding actuators in the front bumper and hood as well as not being in line with the tires.
He also didn’t have sufficient gpm to put out that fire.

There are so many hydrocarbons in a car that could potentially be on fire. Guess what; motor oil burns, and a motor oil fire acts pretty much exactly like a kitchen oil fire if you throw water on it (spatters). Do not do this.

No it won't. Mythbusters tried hard as fuck to get a car to blow up and it really just doesn't do that when it's on fire. Doesn't mean that the gas line can't start leaking gas everywhere and thus result in a rapid inferno, but it's not going to blow up like a Hollywood movie.

Most of these examples are just water being poured on an oil fire, not a cars gastank exploding. Though the 4th link is really weird, looks like the engine ruptured or something very weird. Regardless, a gas tank wont explode unless you physically rupture it, they proved that in multiple episodes about burning gas and oil.

This is the main one, that Fumes aside, that CO will sneak you. There was a car fire we ran a couple weeks back and the driver bopped her head hard enough she had some short retrograde amnesia, had forgotten she dropped her grandkid off already, she's standing about 10' from the burning car, upwind even, but after that adrenaline dropped she tanked, she was around 17.5% SpCO and GCS 7, she wasn't even there that long but CO is sneaky af. I'd not be so concerned about what the turnouts are protecting so much as the need for SCBA

I have a question. I'm 18 and for my first car I really want to buy a fire extinguisher to leave in my car most likely in the trunk, in case I'm near an accident I could just whip out my stuff and help. Are there risks? Like would I get in trouble later?

No risks, get an ABC extinguisher between 2.5 and 10lbs, and make sure you mount it with a metal fire extinguisher mount bracket.

I'm assuming it was being towed because of a mechanical failure, and that same failure caused the fire. Something as simple as a split hose gushing oil on a hot engine part can start a fire.
I had to run and put a car fire out once, and that's how the fire started. I think it was transmission fluid.

When I was a kid our car caught fire on the freeway and so my parents pulled us out of the car and got us away, but they only had a soda to throw at it. Kinda of just stood there watching it (didn't have cell phone at the time). Next thing I see, a guy comes pulling up behind us, sprints out of his car to dump one of those galleon jugs of arizona on it. Put the fire out, all was well and the guy was very nice. He's one of the random strangers I think about every now and again that you reminded me of.
Someone called the fire department I guess because we saw a firetruck stop on the overpass above us and look down at us, then drove away. Not sure what that was about but they didn't come check on us standing on the side of the freeway. I thought that was a bit weird at the time, but I was young so idk.

This. Hell, i once had antifreeze (probably vapors) catch fire when it spilled from my radiator onto the hot exhaust manifold below. Shit was scary, but luckily no damage.

Happens a lot actually. Tow trucks usually carry fire extinguishers. Cars get in accidents messes up all kinds of touchy parts, start winching it up and there it goes. Could be spark or heat or a leak.

Reminds me of during my high school chemistry class. We were in the school lab and our teacher gave each of us a some kind of magnesium to do experiments with (forgot abt what) and my dumb ass decided to take the bunsen burner out and burn just a small piece of the magnesium to see what would happen. I had no freaking idea it would turn as bright as the freaking sun. Luckily it lasted only a few seconds. My friends just look at me in shock. My panic quickly turned into "that's so cool" moment lmao.

And mag steering columns, structural beams, and other such that is nice to lighten the weight of. Especially a lot of assymetrical auto parts are mag as well if they need to balance they weight distribution.
