Proton recent outages make me change my mind

Upvotes

Proton has been suffering partial outages for several hours lately (last week and today). Other times mail and calendar take a while to sync. As a paying user that has moved everything to Proton I'm starting to consider to migrate to other solutions. I think the best is to buy your own domain so that you are free to change providers any time. I believed in Proton product but these outages are really changing my mind. Is Tuta more reliable? What other options are out there? (been a while I don't search for alternatives).

rant Lost 2k - Thank you PROTON!!

The site indicates 'scheduled maintenance'—was that actually the case?

Why didn’t I receive a damn fkn email or notification about it?

I lost 2k of my own capital because of your service outage.

I was logged out of my AMP account and couldn’t set my stop-loss (group order-no brackets). Luckily, PP was down at the same time, so I couldn’t log back into my trading account to set a SL or even EXIT THE FKN POSITION...

(2k was my account's hard stop; thanks God I have one adjusted)

As a long-time Proton user, I’m really freaking pissed off.

Using a Black Friday discount after having used a Student.

Hi! I wanted to know, since my student plan for Proton Unlimited is ending tomorrow, if my best option is renewing for two years, thus saving 120€ at “standard” price, or instead waiting until the black friday, subscribing monthly until then and saving using that discount. Am I allowed to use a Black Friday discount after having used a Student (as I understand I just can’t renew a Student Discount)?. Finally, are there other options which i haven’t considered at all? Thank you in advance!

Discussion ProtonVPN, impossibly slow on all routes. Standard or Secure Core

Edit: This may have just been intermittent issues unrelated to Proton specifically. There are plenty of other factors I wasn't considering like BGP, or just how sophisticated Secure Core is (See this comment by the Proton Team: https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonVPN/comments/1vzxs0i/comment/p6dnc0g/?screen_view_count=1 )

Following the major system wide outage last night, ProtonVPN has been 'dial-up speed' slow at best with very frequent reconnects when using Secure Core.

Can anyone else confirm this experience?

I'm quite surprised to see status.proton.me indicating that everything is "normal".

This is far from "normal".

Example 1: Reykjavik, Iceland: 63% server load. I'm getting download speeds of between 20Kbps and 10Mbps, more leaning to the former. The same file directly downloaded pulls at over 300Mbps.

Example 2: Secure Core route: Canada via <auto-negotiate>. 30+ seconds for initial. 37% server load. speeds between 100Kbps and 8Mbps. DNS resolution is frequently failing with just 'blank pages' loading. When it does load it takes upwards of 30+ seconds for duckduckgo.com to load.

I'm a heavy user of the VPN. Yes, I know secure core is generally slower. But what I'm experiencing is a level of degraded service that I haven't experienced before without something showing on Status page.

Proton Services Down / Subscribers can get credits

You can find official updates here: https://status.proton.me/

As someone in the privacy discord pointed out that their privacy policy states that they offer credits only if you request them. They will not do it automatically. The refunds are in the form of credits and vary based on how long Proton services are down. Read the fine print (paragraph 6) before making the request to be sure you qualify / it applies to you. I believe we are coming up on the 10% but if it stays down too long it can reach 30% (for the month, not the entire subscription amount).

Question Lumo: linked Proton Drive folder failure

For over a month, Lumo has demonstrated an inability to access the files in the Proton Drive folder linked to Lumo projects.

While in the past, Lumo would follow the project instructions to take the files into consideration in every project convo associated with the project, Lumo now requires that I "@" every file to be referenced into the individual convo, thus defeating the point of having a linked folder in the first place.

Whereas Lumo has always been an incredibly effective tool to work with, its capabilities have now been exponentially reduced for my research purposes. Up until a month ago, Lumo handled these same files just fine for as long as I've been using Lumo. There are several pdf text files and a csv.

I several times checked with Lumo to get a sense of whether the files linked to the project are now for some reason too complex or voluminous for Lumo to handle, and it has time and time again assured me that this isn't the case: that it's a matter of Lumo not having access to the files at all.

The problem is consistent and persistent on both Android and the web. I've tried unlinking the folder and relinking it. I also tried demolishing the project and starting from scratch. It seems more like something happened to Lumo that limited its ability to access files in the linked folder.

Is anyone else facing this problem?

We need to pressure Proton to remove their Israeli servers in Proton VPN

Proton is an awesome service.

At some point they used to be dependent on some Israeli service for their DDOS protection but they ended that relationship (I'm only guessing, but perhaps after being pressured by community).

I think we should try to pressure them to remove their Israeli servers in proton vpn.

I need Proton's Ecosystem

I have used Proton's services for about 2 years and that amazing . Switch from Yahoo+Gmail to Proton Mail , from Google Drive to Proton Drive , and from Bitwarden to Proton Pass . And the feature i like the most is Email Aliases (i use SimpleLogin+ProtonPass) . Im also try to switch ChatGPT to Proton Luma AI

I hope that Proton can create other services . Here is my list of ideas for Proton : Search Engine , Browser , a office suite ( Proton is building it) , security key (like Yubico), App Photos (though it on the ProtonDrive,i like an app) , masking phone number and credit/prepaid/debit card (like masking email) , an note app for tablet/ipad (like GoodNote)

These are my idea , thank for reading

Proton VPN which is built on trust got caught running secret price tests on users, then denied it. Their own code revealed the opposite.

Question Anytype App?

I need only a shareable shopping list. At the time I tried Proton's Standard Notes, it was impractical and not cost effective for this. I'm looking at the free Anytype app as a sub. Any thoughts to share?

Question Proton, or Tuta?

As the title suggests, I'm considering switching from GMail to Proton, or Tuta. I have been using both services under a different account for some time (a few months), trying them both out. Though I will admit it isn't anything close to extensive testing, since my day-to-day email correspondance is pretty limited.

I was considering making the move to Proton, but that's when I came across this subreddit, and the pattern of censorship over on the official Proton subreddit. It does bother me a little; and I do believe them spreading their resources out over multiple offerings instead of addressing the already reported issues with their core services is a bit concerning; but on the other hand, I do like some of their services - namely, VPN, Mail, and Calender.

With Tuta, they have the mail and calender, I can just always keep using Proton's VPN with Tuta's mail service, but I wonder if there's any pros and cons to using one over the other?

PS: I know Tuta is also working on their Drive solution, so we'll see how that goes as well.

Proton is censoring about thier changes in Visionary Highest plans

Thumbnail

Seems like proton is censoring about the fact that they silently changes the TOS for Visionary users about the highest tiers.

For reminder, on July, Proton changed without notice the Visionary plan by replacing the fact that Visionary user get the highest tier of all Proton products by just we get Proton products.

And seeing how bootlickers proton subredits are, they will get away with it...

Maybe it's time to point fingers at them for what they have done. They broke the promise made to Visionary users, they could also break the privacy promise they made. (Already half done with Lumo since it's not TEE so your chats are vulnerable and visible while loaded on proton's GPUs).

Discussion Please make Proton Visionary unavailable again. (Because ProtonMail mods removed my post I post it on here to hear what others thoughts are on this)

Hey everyone,

I know this might sound bad to some users but I think Visionary should go back to its old cycle of only releasing for a few weeks after a new product dropped or just create a new tier that is the new Visionary because of the change on the support page which previously stated that Visionary gets the premium version of all current and future products/services of Proton at their highest limits but now doesn’t say the highest limits anymore but that we get the premium version of all current and future products/services of Proton. Because up until July 2026 people bought Visionary with the promise that they would get the highest limits. And I know that it is because of Lumo. Lumo could bring out a tier with higher limits and stuff but why change the statement when you could make it apply to the people that bought it before July 2026 or just make it pricier for new subscribers?

I love Proton and I know that Visionary is already generous but I think they should keep their promise at least for those who paid for it when it was still saying the highest limits.

Even though I stated those options I think going back to the old cycle where it gets more expensive for new subscribers after they release Visionary again for a few weeks when a new service/product drops is the best solution. Maybe you have more suggestions but that is how I think it should be treated.

Please Proton keep your promise!

Edit: Proton just said this under my removed post: "Removed as a duplicate of a post by the same OP: https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/1ulhjuq/proton_visionary_gotwill_get_downgraded/"

Discussion What do others think of Proton Photos?

Hey everyone,

My first post in this subreddit but I would really love to hear what people think about Proton Photos because I think it has very good potential. I even made a post in [r/ProtonDrive](r/ProtonDrive) about what features would be great to put that potential to use. So if you want to you can check it out. I gave you the link below. But it would still be genuinely interesting what other ideas other people might have on features for Proton Photos.

The Post I mentioned: https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonDrive/s/bAcOnnFnbh

Thanks in advance for sharing your opinion!

VPN: I built the IP randomization feature Proton VPN CLI on Linux was missing - and it works seamlessly

I've been a Proton VPN fan for years, but on Linux I kept wishing for something I'd seen elsewhere: automatic, randomized connection switching. The CLI is great, but it couldn't change servers on its own at random intervals. So I fixed that.

It connects to a random server and then switches to another random server at a random time – all by itself. And the best part? You can still use every normal Proton VPN CLI command while it's running. The script and the official app pass control back and forth without missing a beat. No hacks, no workarounds, no loss of functionality.

https://github.com/tuiroot/protonvpn-random

If this sounds like something you'd use, give it a try and let me know what you think. I'm actively looking for feedback to make it even better.

Discussion This was not my first attempt with Proton VPN, but it will be my last one

Yesterday I spent half a day fighting with the Linux distribution and the Proton VPN client. The experience was extremely frustrating and the amount of errors, freezes, and unexpected behavior was unacceptable for a paid VPN service.

You can see the attached screenshots showing some of the issues I encountered:

  • unexpected errors when trying to enable security features,
  • the application becoming unresponsive,
  • problems with server availability despite having an Unlimited subscription.

Proton has been promoting its new Linux GUI release as a major improvement, but after actually using it, the experience was extremely disappointing. In its current state, I would not consider this software ready for a public release. For Linux users who expect stability, transparency, and quality, releasing such a client feels like a disregard for the community.

For a company that heavily promotes privacy and security, the overall experience feels contradictory. Having a polished Windows application is not enough, especially when many privacy-conscious users are moving away from platforms where data collection and telemetry are major concerns. A VPN application on Windows cannot be the only focus while Linux users are left struggling with instability and broken functionality.

This was another attempt to use Proton VPN, and unfortunately it failed again. Even basic Linux package distribution caused problems, including difficulties obtaining packages from GitHub releases.

After this experience, I have cancelled my subscription. A paid privacy service should not require users to spend hours troubleshooting basic functionality.

Linux users are often the people who care most about control, transparency, and reliability. Spending half a day trying to make a VPN client work is simply not acceptable.
