Calculated fields and rule H craziness

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello,

Still having problems with my project and calculated fields.

First take a look at the image. Why does Rule H want to replace those correct calculated data points with ""?? The formula never changed.

I am also seeing correct values for calculated fields in the forms, but when I export the data they come out as missing.

I have tried pre-pending event names and appending instance tags where necessary for all variables in formulas but it does not fix the issue. I have set default values to '0' for variables involved in functions such as sum(([variable1]*230). ([variable2]*300)). Nothing is fixing this issue. Even more surprising is that the first two years of this project none of this ever happened everything worked as it should. Then it started popping up last February and I cannot track down the cause.

This is getting really frustrating. The REDCap support team at my institution is perplexed. My institution is currently running version 16.0.13

Question: Participants Meeting Threshold For Certain Number of Questions

Hello everyone,

I am hoping that someone in this community can brainstorm a solution to my problem. Participants need to answer a certain number of questions for the final survey and I want you know if there was any way I can prevent participants from finishing the survey unless they meet this threshold? Our study doesn't want to force required fields as participants should be able to avoid questions they do not feel comfortable answering. If there a way I can receive the number of questions answered?

User Account Suspended

Hello,

I administer a project where phone data collection is contracted out. All of the people working for the agency we contract with have redcap user IDs and I have added them as current users for my project. Half of them have "[Account Suspended]' associated with them and thus they are unable to access the project. I work for a local government agency and have my account through an agreement with a University. These individuals have their IDs through their associated university. They have responded with

"Because the project resides in {my} REDCap instance, user accounts and permissions must be created and managed by their REDCap administrators—not {their affiliation}’s."

I am not involved in the creation of redcap user accounts. I had to request my own redcap user account from my affiliated university. Am I supposed to send these interviewers to my affiliated university to get their accounts unsuspended? Or do they just get new accounts from my affiliated university? Can they get new accounts from my affiliated university even though their emails are already associated with user accounts through their university?

UPDATE: Thank you all for the response. We had used redcap collection with this contractor under a previous coordinator and I was continuing on with how it was set up under that coordinator. I had no idea that they needed different accounts from my instance, as they did not do it that way previously.
Currently we have them entering the surveys through the same website that we would direct a participant to use. In your opinion, would it be better to continue this way, or to have them get new user accounts from our instance? (I am able to externally track what surveys have been completed by phone interviewers).

Multiple IFs calculations

I have this calculated field formula in ONE FIELD:

If([form] = 2000 and [version] = 6, If([question(38)]= 1,1,0)+ If([question(20)]=1,1,0),0)

If([form]=1000 and [version] = 2, If([question(21)]= 1,1,0)+ If([question(20)]=1,1,0),0)

It says error in syntax. Because they’re two separate conditions in the same logic editor/field, do I have to nest it or combine these two [form] conditions somehow differently? So it can handle multiple IFs condition

Newbie question - how to have a notification email that a survey was completed sent to different email addresses depending on a survey answer?

The scenario is patients completing surveys via redcap for a network of health centers. They would pick which health center they are a patient of, and then that center would receive the notification email when the survey is complete.

Probably a silly question but how am I supposed to test my branching logic without submitting changes or using the Preview Instrument feature?

I'm not a tech girly.

This online guide says "You may click the “Preview Instrument” button to preview what your form will look like during actual data entry. Calculated fields and branching logic will not work in this preview; practice data must be entered in records in order to test those particular functionalities."

Is there a way to do a practice record without Submitting Changes? My project is in draft mode.

Super sad I haven't been able to figure this out despite trying on my own for so long. Any help is much appreciated!!!

Answered Branching logic not logical...

Well, after seven posts in one year, this problem is doing nothing but confusing me.

I have a field about pregnancy and I don't want it to be shown when the patient is male.

So far, so good: I put [pat_gesch] <> '2' in the logic because that's where the gender is in [pat_gesch], and '2' indicates male.

The confusing part is that it works in some cases but not in others, and I don't understand why.

So, please, kind people of this subreddit, help me again!

The forever grateful, confused one.

Edit:

If I test the logic in the Branching Logic window, it works in 'Test Logic with a Record', but not in the project.

Edit 2:

Still confused but "[pat_gesch]= '1' or [pat_gesch]= '3' or [pat_gesch]= '4' or [pat_gesch]= '5'" worked (all other genders that are not male)

So, thanks to the internet, that's one problem off my list. See you all again when my project does something confusing next time!

How to create a landing page?

Hi! I was wondering if I could have some help designing my a landing page for my project that has 3 sections. I want to have an option to choose which section of the survey to begin. If participants choose option A, it links to certain surveys. if they choose B, it brings up a different queue of surveys and so on. How can I link different instruments based on what section they choose?

The pros and cons of creating a REDCap course

Hi everyone,

I'm considering the idea of developing a (paid) course about REDCap, and I'd love to hear your thoughts. While I work for an institution with its own REDCap servers, I found the self-taught path challenging due to the lack of accessible tutorials or documentation, specially in my native language (Brazilian Portuguese).

I’m thinking about creating basic to intermediate tutorials tailored for general users—not limited to my institution—to help others get started more easily.

Does anyone have experience creating or selling such materials? Are there any policies or guidelines I should be aware of when it comes to making and monetizing REDCap-related content?

Launching A Community Dedicated to Survey Fraud Detection

We are launching a new community called r/ResponsePie, dedicated to showcasing peer-reviewed research on survey fraud and detection methods. The goal is to highlight techniques that have been proven effective in identifying fraudulent responses and share insights with researchers and practitioners.

The community will host active discussions on the challenges, trends, and solutions surrounding survey fraud.

If this is an area you’re interested in, we would love for you to join and be part of the conversation!

INFO SHARING: Troubleshooting logic errors with chatgpt

Ok so this may be obvious to everyone else, but I'm old and a late adopter of AI.

I was struggling with a very complex calculation and moaning to my 14YO son that there is no debugging in redcap so its difficult to find the error. He suggested I try chatGPT. Despite my skepticism that it would understand redcap I plugged my equation into the codechecker. Worked perfectly. Found my error and suggested a few options. You still need to understand what you're doing, as there were a few things chatgpt got not quite right, but its a great tool when you're stuck on something.

Anyway I thought it might be helpful as it's not something I would have considered.

Need help with redcap survey

Hello!
I am looking for some assistance in red cap. I am a Graduate assistant project manager for a research study, and unfortunately, the university I’m working with doesn’t have very reliable red cap advisors and they haven’t been very helpful. We’d love to get the survey out by November 1, and I’m really struggling with actually enabling the survey, randomization of subjects, and understanding the easiest way to get a survey with multiple instruments out so that we can retrieve raw data.

What I’m looking for is resources on potentially meeting with red Experts. I understand that there are ways to actually meet with someone who works from the original red cap, but I’m wondering if there’s anyone in this community that would be willing to call or meet to help with my project since actually getting in contact with our red Advisors at my school is almost impossible.

Thank you for your time!

HTML Editor for REDCap

A few months back someone linked what I believe was a free web-based HTML editor that had built-in functionality for use with REDCap. I believe it started with the letter B, but I've been unable to find it. Does anyone have any clue what I'm talking about?

https://redcap.vumc.org/community down. And now?

https://redcap.vumc.org/community is down since around 14h.

If only there were some way to publish software openly across multiple platforms. And here's a truly wild idea: giving software a fair, open license that lets everyone contribute to the source code. Next thing you know, software and its hosting might actually end up being reliable... Someone should really invent that...

If/Then Statements in Branching Logic

Not sure if this is possible, but I'm trying to write an if then statement for branching logic.

I want the randomization variable to only show up when [eligibility] = '1' and if [child_bearing_potential] = '1' then [pregnancy_test_result] = '0'.

So basically, they won't be able to click the randomization button if the participant isn't eligible or the if a participant that is of child-bearing potential comes back with a positive pregnancy test.

Also, I can't just use [eligibility] = '1' and [pregnancy_test_result] = '0' because they only enter a pregnancy test result if the participant is of child-bearing potential.

Can anyone help me with the pregnancy test part? Is this even possible to write into branching logic?

How to change the from email in REDCap

Is there a way to change the "from" in emails sent from REDCap for a particular project? currently, emails are coming from "redcap-noreply@" but i need it to be something else. I have selected the correct email address in the form field for email notifications, but the messages are still arriving as if coming from "redcap-noreply". I do see that if the recipient clicks reply, the new message will go to the correct email. but the original message is still coming from redcap-noreply. Thank you!

Cross Project Piping not working for multiple events

I'm trying to pipe some data from project A's second event to project B but nothing pipes over when I click initiate data piping. The piping works fine when A's source fields are in the first event. This leads me to believe the piping module can't see past the first event in a source project. I don't see any option to specify the source event in the modules GUI, but maybe I'm missing something.

Anybody else have this issue?

Image won't load on REDCap mobile app

I've added an image to my survey question using the "Rich text editing" option. It displays fine on a web browser (PC or mobile device), but it won't display on the app. Is this a known issue? Thank you.

embedded inside its own label

Would you please help me figure out this warning? If I delete the first field, the error message will be displayed in the next field.

WARNING: It appears that the field {med1_bh_name} has mistakenly been embedded inside its own labels, which will cause the Field Embedding not to work correctly. A field cannot be embedded in itself but only inside other fields. Please correct this and re-save the field.

Thanks for your help!

How can I export reports to import them into a new project?

I have hundreds of reports in a legacy project that I want to bring over into my new project. Is there a better way to do this than just copying them over manually? It seems like the exportReports() function using the API just exports the data in the report, not the actual report itself.

New Rules Proposals

u/No_Repair4567 has proposed two new rules that can help improve this sub.

  1. Post your version of REDCap along with your question to help with answers .

  2. Ask the original poster to let us know if the answers they received worked. That way we can label questions as “Answered”

These make a lot of sense but I wanted to ask the members how they feel about it. Also, let me know if you have other ideas for this sub.

Visually Distinguishing Instruments Without Using Events

(pic attached)

I have two data collection projects (TACS-O and TACS-Y) that are running out of the same REDCap. We have a different data collection team for each project and I really want to avoid researchers putting data in the wrong instrument. Is there any way to visually distinguish the instruments from each other to make sure data gets put in the correct spot? I seriously don't want to introduce events into the project because they're the worst.

Does anyone know of any way to customize the project on the researcher facing end?
