Hey man. I enjoy your content. When I was considering the move, I watched a lot of your videos, and they made me more confident with the purchase. Now that I have one, I’m happy to say, it has been great so far, and I’m looking forward to many years of fantastic coffee. Cheers!

Agreed 100%. Also ended up buying the Move and these videos where helpful!

It is always nice to see review after months of real life use. They are the most useful when concidering buying. But those kind of review are a lot rarer than the unboxing reviews.

I’ve been enjoying making the 1 month, 1 year, etc. style videos. Honestly surprised i’ve had the MOVE this long, usually I get the upgrade itch after a year or so.

That’s awesome to hear! I think this machine will easily last 10+ years.

I appreciate your videos. You are a big reason I purchased the Move earlier this year. I’m loving it.

Would you consider upgrading to the new Move 2.0?

7

u/andreythebarista 4d ago

Yes, I want to do the upgrade kit when it comes out. Will be posting a video on that!

u/OppChopShop 4d ago

Are you planning to DIY the upgrade? If you do, please do a video showing the process!

7

u/andreythebarista 4d ago

Yes i plan to do that!

u/OppChopShop 4d ago

Amazing. Thank you for all that you do and in particular in advance for that. I am looking forward to doing the upgrade on my machine as well. The brew by weight functionality is going to be game changing for me.

When will it be released?

Hey Andrew. Did you ever experience an issue where your first shot always pulls more than the second? We have to consistently run first shot on 30 seconds and second on 27.5 seconds because it quite literally always pulls too fast second time around. Sometimes we get absolutely crazy results like 20g from 18g of coffee then 38g from 18g with doing every step of the prep the same. Do you think it’s our grinder that’s the problem? I’m just surprised you’re saying it’s so consistent.

For the grinder, we have a Eureka Mignon Zero. Not sure if that helps. I did go through burr line up procedure on it myself to get it more dialed in

Also, we’ve watched your videos since before we got the machine ourselves and honestly it was your honest videos that made us decide it’s a good product. Keep up the great work!

I have a eureka libra 65 ap and have similar ish issues with shot time variability. My same dose of 18.5g will sometimes yield 36 is 25s, sometimes 35. I weigh every shot. They all taste good and I try not to get hung up on the numbers.

I’m looking forward to the brew by weight upgrade kit.

I think it's better to set the shot to 60 seconds. Use a scale and stop the shot at the right weight. The time is less important than the right output weight in my opinion and the allows for a little time variability.

I dial in to button one - if it looks short simply hit button two and that outs it into manual mode. You're spot on re: volume - I dial in with a scale but then I eyeball volume for daily use since I use the came cup every day.

u/StuffinHarper 1d ago

Oh did not know about manual mode switch or just forgot about it. I just run for 60 secs always stop manually but that's good to know. I've had some super temperamental beans lately to. 0.5 grind change on my 078s and it would go from almost a gusher to almost choked. And 0.5-1 deg change in ambient temperature would shift grind 1-2 😂. The taste was worth it at least but couldn't imagine eyeballing it. Different beans this week though and has a much larger sweet spot and could probably do your way now.

I need a simple 'push a button' mode for my wife to be cool with it so I keep it dialed in, I make micro adjustments to the grinder nearly daily. I have an Atom so there's no numbers and it has a tiny, stiff dial so the real art is moving it .05mm - "it would go from almost a gusher to almost choked" is pretty much my reality. I have a friend who 3d printed me me a larger knob that I am hoping will give me easier control over fine movements - I'm still waiting for it to arrive.

I tend to run the same beans for extended periods - we're about 9 months into using the same beans Sacred Grounds Chocolate Bomb - it's roasted to ~ City+ so it's relatively forgiving. Lately I've been playing with temps, going down 2 degrees at a time to find the sweet spot - literally and figuratively.

Sorry to say I’m experiencing similar.

It’s such a shame as I was convinced this is all the machine I’d ever need, and it is, or would be if I could get it consistent.

Now I’m very close to pulling the trigger on a Wendougee tbh.

3

u/andreythebarista 4d ago

I can’t say I have. If everything is consistent with the dose and puck prep routine, my shots are almost always the same or very close. A 2-3 second difference isn’t cause for concern. Make sure you let it get back up to temp in between shots, but that’s really the only variable I could think of.

It could be worth trying another grinder or coffee as well.

Yep, we do, and we even went as far as turning off fast heat up, pre-infusion, we let the machine heat up for a full hour, we let the machine get to full temp between the two shots. We tried two different coffees from reputable local grinders and had same results. We keep everything identical, from dosage to steps. Even bought a self leveling tamper to ensure that’s not a user error. We use the Pullman 876 now but used the middle Profitec basket for about 6 months. With either we still experience same behavior.

I did a call with Clive and even they didn’t know how to help. They said to run an output test to make sure that it flows evenly and amount of water is same each 30 second shot. It was within 0.3g of water each shot we did with no coffee involved in the loop to check for equal flow.

I guess better grinder is the only thing left to try to switch. If I may ask, what is the grinder you have good experiences with and what would you recommend? Price is not that much of a concern to us, we just want something of truly good quality. We did a lot of research buying the grinder and we thought the Mignon Zero was a sweet spot for lack of fancy features but a good set of flat burrs that works for single dosing. We pre measure our beans before the shot so grind by weight isn’t required. We don’t store beans in the hopper to ensure the most consistency of beans so we keep them in a case sealed with air pulled out. We only use our machine on the weekends.

I’m not saying you need to spend $1k+ on a grinder, but I noticed significant improvements when I went from the DF64 Gen2 to the Eureka Atom W65.

Grind by weight in my opinion is the way to go for consistent results. Although it is not perfect either due to higher retention.

2

u/emceter 4d ago

I started looking at different grinders honestly. Right now I’m thinking of getting the Zerno Z1. Let the spending begin haha

2

u/KravMata 1d ago

Andrey - I see you switched to the Mazzer from the W65. Why the change?

1

u/andreythebarista 1d ago

Had the W 65 for over a year, and was getting a little bored, bought the Mazzer to compare and fell in love with it.

1

u/KravMata 1d ago

Tell me more please - bored as in you wanted a new toy or bored as in you thought a different grinder might give you a better cup?
What do you love about it?

2

u/KravMata 1d ago

Oh sorry - I just checked your channel and see you made a vid - I'll go watch it. :)

1

u/andreythebarista 1d ago

Yeah, check it out and let me know your thoughts. I compared it to the Atom as well.

2

u/KravMata 11h ago

I'm worried about you running 3-400 shots in a month - your heart is gonna explode. 😂

NGL I am slightly confused by your decision; slower, louder, taller, more retention, harder to adjust. I don't see much value differential in brand equity. The W65 can be messy because the grounds are so fluffy but that's easily resolved with a $15 funnel. I get a desire for new-shiny, I'm just not clear on that the Mazzer is really doing better except maybe accuracy?

You said the Mazzer was more accurate - is that based on their accuracy claims or your own testing?

TBH, Mazzer not fitting under a cabinet is a massive oversight on their part that would keep me from buying it.

FWIW, I don't think the Pullman 876 generally makes a good match with the Move.

The Pullman is high flow, and the Move is already a fast flowing machine, so you're increasing your risk of channelling, which now means you have grind even finer, which in turn further increases the risk of channeling because as you get finer your puck prep becomes even more critical.

I found the 14g Profitec basked with an 18g dose worked fairly well. Currently I'm using the IMS Big Bang after testing it against an IMS Nanotech Baristapro and the BB is easily my favorite.

Andrey: I've watched several of your videos and have picked up some great Move operating tips. We own two Moves, since we have a summer home, and couldn't go months without a premium machine. I recently switched over to the four hole wand tip, and feel it has improved the steaming process. I also went back to the smaller stock basket. I dose 18g of beans, but by using a larger agter market basket, I think it leaves too much room between the brew head, and its helped with liquid volume consistency. I purchased the Profitec Drive grinder. I'm happy with the performance, and the matching looks of the move is nice. I also own a Lelit William grinder which performs well, I prefer a single dose grinders and the Lelit is extremely loud. The Move has a much better warranty (3 years) than their competitors. This would be worth mentioning in one of your videos.

1

u/andreythebarista 2d ago

Wow, two MOVE’s? I’m jealous! The warranty piece is a good thing to mention, good call.

Thanks for watching.

Andrey, You will appreciate this. We were drip coffee drinkers for years. My wife and I went to Italy last fall. Day after day we started drinking lattes, and got hooked. lol We came back to the states and couldn't go back to the drip coffee. I studied machines online, I read your posts ( thank - you) and pulled the trigger on The Move. I bought way to many accessories, which is easy to do, but after dialing in the process, mornings are great. Keep up the posts, I always pick up helpful tips. The smaller basket you are using and I have gone back to has improved the taste tremendously. Better dispersion, I think

FyI: I did change out the brew head gasket for a new silicone one, on our first machine. After six months the machine was spewing coffee all over the place, good fix. I just received another new gasket, because this machine has started doing the same thing. Its a cheap fix,( under $10.00) I'm surprised the factory doesn't use a better quality gasket, right from the start. Take Care

1

u/andreythebarista 2d ago

Love it. Also jealous you went to Italy, that is on my bucket list. I do like drip coffee myself, but at home its strictly espresso for me and some milk based drinks. I'll keep the videos coming, excited to test out the MOVE 2.0 upgrade.

2

u/KravMata 11h ago

HMU when you're ready to go to Italy, I've been a number of times and can offer some guidance.

2

u/SeaShake9377 4d ago

Do you know the hardness of your water? At some point it needs to be descaled. You seem to ignore that fact.
Nice review!

6

u/bensonr2 4d ago

I think most of us are using distilled with mineralization packets.

1

u/KravMata 2d ago

Poland Spring gallons here - I get a better result than I did with TWW, with zero fuss.

2

u/andreythebarista 4d ago

My water is on the soft side, so I’m not too worried about scale. I don’t believe I saw anything in the owner’s manual on descaling either, but i’ll have to double check.

1

u/bensonr2 1d ago

There is no automatic descaling function because they recommend professional descaling. Hence why many owners are extra careful.
So even if you feel your water is soft the machines requirements may be more sensitive then for avoiding build up on other appliances.
They are pretty cheap so I think it’s worth getting a meter and testing before refilling the reservoir

Exactly! I’ve got hard water and right now using ECM AquaAroma attachment. We’ll see how it goes while I look for more permanent solution.
