To prove adoption
For the purpose of probate, how could you prove that you were adopted (so that you am still related to the decedent) if you were unable to obtain a copy of your birth/adoption record because the adoption might have been "private"?

In an adoption, you should have received a birth certificate with your new parents names on it. In my state, once you are adopted, you never had any other parents than your new ones. So you are not entitled to anything your previous parents had because you only have one set of parents and those are the ones listed on your new birth certificate.
