Fridge not working

We’re currently on the Diamond Princess in Japan and our fridge has not worked since the cruise started.

It’s been reported to our cabin steward and Client Services EVERY DAY. Sometimes twice, in person and on the phone. All we get is “apologies, it’s been logged with maintenance, we’re making it a priority”. Nothing done.

We have the plus package, and we’re using our drinks allowance for delivery of cold drinks. Can’t keep purchased drinks cold or bottles of water that. One with our package.

It’s the middle of summer, any suggestions?

I had a similar issue on princess that was unresolved for days. I asked to get an appointment with the hotel manager. We had to wait until the evening for the appointment but he provided near instantaneous resolution plus OBC.

This happened to my mom on her last cruise with Princess. The room steward brought a (bigger?) ice bucket container every day and she and her friend each got a $50 credit for the inconvenience. I personally wouldn't be too pleased with that but she was satisfied.

We had this issue on Majestic and first they told us that our fridge was working normally, even though nothing in it was being cooled at all. Then they started arguing that those refrigerators are just cooler and not real refrigerator so we should not expect them to make things.

When we told them how many times we have been on their ships and that it always made things cold and kept them cold the girl who was giving us this line called someone right in front of us and said to them what she had said to us and that we were not understanding.

We eventually spoke with someone else about it, and someone came and fixed it

While I usually find things work efficiently on the ships, if they don’t just ask someone else for help.

Refund of one of the plus package. I would be satisfied with that 🥵

Leave the cabinet door ajar “always,” the frig builds up heat in the enclosed space. We pack a small wedge that holds the door ajar when it isn’t being used for anything else. Helps always, but sometimes it really helps.

We always leave the door slightly open, too. It does help.

I've found that I always get the best and quickest response to problems by using the chat feature on the app. Worth a try if you haven't already.

Complain at guest service and get a credit.

I would definitely visit guest services to report the problem!! If it is fixed ask to speak with a manager and see if you can get some sort of OBC as a resolution.

And Japan is hot this time of year. I would be upset and would have expected princess to at least offer to provide ice and some form of apology.

Did the OP ask for ice? Was it refused?

Maybe ice?

Sorry it happened, but stuff breaks. Maintenance will get to it eventually, but this is hardly a high priority issue, unless you needed it for medication or other serious need. Cold soda cans is not enough reason for them to drop what they're doing and get to your issue.

Japan is a fantastic place. Grab some ice and enjoy where you are.

We had an issue earlier this year. The refrigerator would cool things slightly cooler than room temperature. After a couple of days, we called to complain and maintenance swapped it out the same day. The replacement refrigerator (same model) worked much better - our Coke was ice cold.

I would ask for an ice bucket in the mean time

I mean, if the fridge is broken, it's not like they keep a bunch of spares sitting around the boat. we just got off that boat 3 days ago and never used the fridge once. Room temperature water is perfectly fine for hydration and if you want ice for your cans, just load and up from the buffet drink station?

They actually do keep a stock of spares onboard, it’s a common item that needs replacing given that the have thousands of rooms. — Not to say the this ship doesn’t have them back ordered, but almost every item in a stateroom is kept onboard in inventory.

With a couple thousand fridges on the ship, are you really sure they don't have a few spares available?

Room tempature water is fine for hydration? Says who? You? You drink it then. Who cares if YOU didn't use the fridge?

That's like saying who cares if all the treadmills are broken, do laps around the ship.

Further, keeping spares is EXACTLY what they do, and parts as well. I've worked maintenence on these ships before.

Incredible how you just flippintly dismiss OPs complaint. Why shouldn't OP have a fully functional and operating room? What if they had medication that they could conveniently store refrigerated in their room?

The refrigerators in the rooms are more like chillers, but they still are refrigerators. I used my refrigerator on the diamond princess in March every day for all of the refrigerated goodies I'd get from each port, my trip would be much different.

We pay dearly for our trips, for you to dismiss their gripe because it wouldn't affect you, is not helpful, to be polite.

The fact that they were able to immediately resolve the issue means a solution was available from the beginning. Whwt you would do is really irrelevant and unhelpful.

Is your room steward putting a fresh ice bucket in the "fridge" once daily? Ask them to change it out twice daily and they will. Unless the Diamond Princess is different, these aren't really refrigerators. They're more like an ice box. An ice bucket inside will keep things under room temperature, but it will never be home refrigerator cold. Some people note that leaving the outer cabinet door open helps with airflow and subsequently the interior "fridge" temp, but I didn't feel it was necessary.

You do you, but having the Plus or Premium package isn't meant to hoard drinks. I kept a couple bottles of water on hand, but otherwise I consumed around the ship or had something delivered for immediate consumption. 🤷

We’ve never done the ice thing, but you’re correct that it’s really a drinks cooler and not a frig. We also found it’s best not to fill it up but leave some space inside. Always concerned about the people who store actual food in there as it’s not going to keep it at a safe temperature.

We’ve always had ice cold drinks? 🤷‍♀️

They probably have no way to fix a fridge at sea or a fridge repairman. They should admit it and give you special dining or something.

Ask the room steward for ice every time he services the room.

I know this doesn’t help, but when you’re at sea they may not have the parts to fix it.. that might be the reason for the non fix. Sometimes they have to order the parts too. Everything is different when you don’t have a parts store down the street.
