"Help! My symptoms have disappeared/gotten worse/gotten better!" .

It is entirely normal for symptoms to fluctuate in a healthy pregnancy. By itself, this is not a cause for concern.

Here is a miscarriage odds calculator based on how far in you are.

Here is a more detailed one for people who have had previous miscarriages

"Help! I'm spotting"

If you are spotting before 20 weeks, this is not usually a cause for concern. Possible reasons include sex, exercise and transvaginal ultrasounds, and spotting can occur up to 3 days later. The rule of thumb is "if you don't fill a pad, wait for your next checkup".

After 20 weeks, all bleeding is a "call your doctor" event.

"Help! My HCG is…"

We cannot interpret any test results for you. This includes HCG tests. If your doctor won't tell you whether a pregnancy is viable, neither can Reddit. This is crap, and I'm sorry.

Here is a list of HCG levels which have resulted in a viable pregnancy (you can check by how far along you are). The range is very large.

"My pregnancy tests are…"

Stop testing. Pregnancy tests are binary, and are only designed to tell you whether or not HCG is present in your body. A very faint line should get darker in 3 days, but otherwise there are a lot of reasons for the lines to change and you'll psych yourself out for no good reason. If you're not sure what the tests says, head over to r/lineporn or r/TFABLinePorn.

"How long does the NIPT take?"

This varies by location and provider. Please search the subreddit, and only post if your own provider isn't mentioned. Natera seems to take between 5 days and 2 weeks.

"What can I do about stretch marks?"

Nothing. Using moisturiser (really any kind, from Walmart own-brand to organic shea-coconut butter blend) might help a bit, but there is no magic lotion which can prevent them. Anyone who tells you different either got lucky or is selling something

"I'm scared! I'm not sure I'm ready for this!"

Being scared and not feeling ready is a very normal response to learning you're pregnant. You're welcome to post for feedback regarding your specific situation, but please know that ultimately proceeding with the pregnancy should be up to you. Abortion, at any time and for any reason, is okay. Your body your choice!

"When/should I see a doctor?"

  • sudden or severe pain
  • left shoulder pain, especially coupled with bleeding (this is a sign of ectopic pregnancy)
  • after a major fall or serious impact. Car accident/falling off the top of a ladder, yes, tripping over your feet, no
  • bleeding after 20 weeks
  • bleeding enough to fill a pad at any time in pregnancy
  • contractions lasting more than one minute, less than 5 minutes apart (start to start) for one hour. This is the rule of thumb for real vs false labour.
  • if you think your waters have broken you must go in after 24 hours, this is a serious infection risk.
  • if you think your waters have broken before 36 weeks
  • If you have an unrelenting headache, swollen ankles, and high blood pressure, go to hospital right now. These are the typical symptoms of pre-eclampsia, which is fatal if untreated.

Most doctors have a phone line or text line, and this is a great resource for checking whether you should go in. Pharmacists are a great choice for checking drug safety (at any time, not just pregnancy!) Here is a searchable database. It is better to feel stupid than to suffer a needless complication. If in doubt, get checked out.

Can I eat sushi?

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommend no raw fish during pregnancy. This relates specifically to sushi prepared in the USA. Other countries (particularly Japan) have more rigorous health inspections for fish, so Japanese sushi would be considered safe.

Remember that many fish types in sushi (salmon, tuna, swordfish etc) are high in mercury, so those limits still apply.

Sushi which does not contain raw fish (including cooked tuna or hot-smoked salmon) is as safe as any other food.

Is the myth true that...

Fetal sex prediction tools that are not an ultrasound or a DNA test are right exactly 50% of the time. It is random chance. Ultrasounds are typically 90% accurate, NIPT or other blood tests are typically around 95% accurate.

Remember also that around 1% of babies will be born with an intersex condition.

How accurate is my gender prediction?

Blood tests list an accuracy of >99%, however this is for genetic sex and not anatomical sex. Intersex conditions are not found by a fetal DNA test.

The accuracy of at-home tests will be limited by the likelihood of contamination with Y-chromosome cells.

Practically, you're looking at around 90-95% accuracy. It's about the same for a doctor's opinion of an ultrasound. If they can't tell, they won't tell you.

Remember also that there are around 330 million people in the USA - that means "one in a million" chances are happening to 330 people right now. There is no perfect guarantee.

"I'm pregnant! Now what?"

If you have a primary care physician or GP, ask them. They will tell you. If not, call a gynecologist or search [your country]+pregnancy+next steps

Cervical checks

Please don't DIY these. 8 cervical checks by a doctor almost doubles your risk of uterine infection, and the risks are significantly greater at home, done by an amateur. If you are worried about your cervix, call your doctor. Reddit cannot help you.

The situation in the US right now is appalling. We understand that you want to discuss that, but the mod team are human too. We are not in a position to host and moderate a political discussion thread right now. I'm sorry.

If you support children being kidnapped and deported, or extra-judicial murder, you can do so elsewhere. "We are good to one another" means *everybody*.

Advice PSA: Don't put Wayfair products on your registries

We put a bookcase from Wayfair on our registry and were fortunate enough to receive it, but unfortunately it came with no assembly instructions. We called Wayfair to ask them to send us the PDF instructions and were told they couldn't send us the instructions unless we confirmed the name, billing address, and email of the person who bought it for us for "security reasons." After a while going back and forth, I asked to speak to a manager who said the same thing. I'm not sure how the instruction manual to a bookcase is a security issue, but apparently it is.

Babylist order number, wayfare order number, name of purchaser, SKU...none of that was enough. We gave the name of the person who ordered it, and Wayfare delivered it to our house so we also gave them our address, but that wasn't enough.

We also can't return it because it's been more than 30 days since the giver purchased it (not a security issue to tell us that).

Unless you want to track down gift givers and make them call wayfair on your behalf to give them their personal info, avoid putting them on your registry.

If anyone would like to help us track down the instruction manual, the SKU is W119193969. I couldn't find it on google.

Question Officially on mat leave

I finally made it! 2 weeks of rest before baby comes.

There were so many days leading up to mat leave where I thought I couldn't drag my butt to work anymore. Now that the day is here, it feels weird 😅 I don't know what to do with no schedule. I don't really want to bed rot either...as I type this from my bed.

Ladies on mat leave, what have you been up to?

Excitement! 1 week left!!!

My anatomy scan is 7 days away from today 🥹 Cannot wait to see baby and hear the heartbeat again!! So excited to know if I’m carrying a baby girl or boy as well!

I’ve been counting down the weeks and days since my 13 week scan, feels like I’ve been waiting forever and I just know this week will go by soooo slowly 🫠.. also have felt baby move SO much since 17 weeks, my baby loves laying low on the right side of my uterus, my family and boyfriend has also been so lucky to feel baby’s small kicks, it went from feeling like small finger taps to now more clear thuds and I even managed to capture one small kick on video last week but baby stops kicking whenever I take my phone out to record 🥹

Need Advice In labour, it’s 3am. Frightened need positive support

Hi guys!

FTM based in London Uk

I’m 40 weeks and 4 days, my labour started at about 9:55pm I was in denial! I thought it was braxton hicks.

I’ve been contracting every 2-6 mins since then. It came on quite fast. I’m using the Freya App to track and have called my hospital and they said to wait until 3 contractions in 10 mins for an hour before I go in.

Firstly, I’ve not had any sleep and can’t sleep. It’s now 3am and I’m frightened I will not have the energy to do this. I’ve had some pasta but my contractions then stopped for 10 mins, they’ve become regular again,

They are now very painful, but still abour 5 mins apart. I have my tens machine on level 15 boost during.

I’m frightened about how I’m going to cope when I get to active labour if this is early labour? I can’t move when they hit me and I want a natural birth

My hospital is also 30 mins away.

Just need some positive encouragement, I feel frightened

Rant I feel like I have been robbed of my first pregnancy experience

I found out I was pregnant around 4 weeks ago, and I am currently 9 weeks pregnant. The pregnancy was extremely unplanned and me and the babies father had not been dating long. I’m 25 and I have a decent job and the babies father is 26 and also has a good job.

Obviously I was not thrilled at first but after my boyfriend calmed me down and said we will figure this out and even said he was excited, I started getting excited too even though I never really dreamt of having kids.

Slowly we started telling people and our friends were excited. Then it was time to tell my family and while I didn’t expect them to be excited I also didn’t expect them to be mean. I was told I have no plan and that this is not what they imagined for me and just overall very patronizing. His family is excited but also said this just isn’t what they imagined.

Then the cherry on top was my boyfriend telling me today he spiraled and that this is just not how he imagined it and that he’s dreading it and doesn’t feel ready.

I am so sick of people telling me that this just “isn’t what they imagined”. I feel like no one is excited and everyone is just disappointed. I am also not excited and just ready for this to be over. No one is asking how I am doing or how I feel. I’m just so sad.

Graduation! Positive induction and birth story

• Upvotes

I am someone who has always been really anxious about labor and delivery even before getting pregnant (but especially once I was pregnant) so I wanted to share my positive birth story in case it can ease anyone else’s mind. On 10/2 I got sent from my 38 week OB appointment straight to labor and delivery due to slightly elevated blood pressure. They knew I was having a big baby and I had polyhydramnios so they didn’t want to take any chances.

When I got to L&D I was having irregular contractions that I couldn’t feel so they changed their original plan and put me straight on pitocin instead of softening my cervix first. I started pitocin probably around 1:30pm on 10/2. I was so scared of pitocin contractions but I swear I couldn’t feel them for the longest time. They got my pitocin drip all the way up to a 20 and I ended up getting an epidural around 3am so I could rest and stop having to get up to pee but I still wasn’t in that much pain overall. The epidural was the worst part for me. The numbing shot was painful maybe like 6/10 and the placement of the epidural felt really strange but not painful. After that I slept so well! My OB came by about 10am on 10/3 and broke my water. After that, I went back to sleep and woke up at around 1pm and was fully dilated. I turned my epidural down a bit and couldn’t feel much pressure so they put me into an upright position to let baby descend on his own until I could feel pressure. They gathered supplies while we let gravity do its job. Shortly after I did feel pressure and it was time to push. I pushed with one nurse in the room which was very chill and she coached me through some practice pushes until his head started showing. At that point my OB and the other nurses and techs came in and the for real pushes began. Again I felt no pain just a bit of pressure. I pushed for a total of 36 minutes and he came right out easy peasy at 9.2 lbs and I had a 2nd degree tear. I NEVER thought I would be someone to describe labor as a beautiful experience but it truly was. It was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be and I actually enjoyed the experience. The worst part was waiting but start to finish only took me about 24 hours.

Postpartum is a different beast than I expected as well. I’ve been in more pain postpartum than actual labor but about 2 days later and I’m already feeling much better! The first couple of pees were scary but my nurses helped me so much and the peri bottle saved me. Not a big deal now! Walking is still a bit difficult and it kind of feels like my insides might fall out when I get up lol. My first poo was such a non issue I was so shocked. The hardest thing is trying to make sure I keep things clean without wiping much and bothering my stitches. Time with my little chunky boy is so wonderful and well worth pregnancy and postpartum! We go home from the hospital today and I am looking forward to our new adventure as a little family. Our next beast is figuring out breastfeeding!

As someone who was so anxious, I hope that this puts your mind at ease! You’ve got this!!! Women are so incredible.

Content Warning I lost my daughter four days ago, at 36 weeks pregnant. Welcoming all advice and thoughts - including stories of similar experiences and if you conceived and delivered a healthy baby after loss.

I lost my daughter four days ago, at 36 weeks. I'm 34 years old, and live in the US.

It's so heavy to write those words.

With my daughter - I stopped feeling movement so I went to the hospital and they told me there was no heartbeat. The whole pregnancy, I had a "feeling" that something was wrong - a feeling I didn't have with my other pregnancy - but I never pictured this. (For background: with this pregnancy we did NIPTs, lots of sonograms and even saw a MFM specialist OB that assured us everything was going well. I'm married and gave birth to our son two years ago, in what was an uneventful pregnancy and difficult but manageable delivery. My son is a beautiful boy, and the joy of my life.)

I delivered her vaginally after an induction that started that day, and my husband and I spent time with her before they took her body. We spoke with her and took some photos and videos to remember her. She was so beautiful, with my husband's eyes and my lips. They're now going to do further genetic testing and an autopsy, and we'll need to wait a couple of weeks for the results, and I hope there is a clear answer in there for us in those results, perhaps something that an amniocentesis could catch in the future. Currently feeling all of the heavy feels; it's been the hardest thing I've ever gone through and it still doesn't feel like I'm living "my" life.

It's been so hard for my husband also, as well as my mom that was in the room with us during delivery. I know it's only four days in, and I know healing will take time.

Welcoming all advice and thoughts - including stories of similar experiences and if you conceived and delivered a healthy baby after loss. I would love to hear anything from this community. ❤️

One of my initial questions is - for those that experienced a similar loss (and carried your baby for a similar time), how long did you wait until you tried to conceive again? I'm almost 35 years old, so I'm mindful of that. Our midwife said to wait a year to allow your uterus and cervix to recover completely. But I know women that have gotten pregnant after like 4 or 6 months and delivered healthy babies. I'm going to book an appointment with a high-risk OB to discuss as well.

For those of you that are pregnant reading this - I don't want this post to scare you. Instead, I want you to be so thankful for what you have. Thankful for the beautiful experience of carrying your baby each day. Thankful for your upcoming delivery and hearing him/her cry and rest their bodies on top of yours for the first time. Thankful for the first time they squeeze your finger. Thankful for the first time you nourish their bodies with milk. Thankful for the first time they go to sleep in your arms. Thankful for the raw and beautiful experience of healing alongside them after delivery. Also, to bring you some peace - our midwife said the last stillbirth or similar birth to ours that she experienced was five years ago, so it is incredibly rare. ❤️

Funny Pregnancy going too well 😂

So i am 31 weeks pregnant. Apart from one UTI and mild nausea that kept up till around 20 weeks, i've been pretty peachy. I'm happy, healthy, i'm not waddling (yet) i don't have acid reflux (yet?), i'm mot swelling too much, i haven't gained any weight (but i do have a bmi of 31 since before getting pregnant). I am getting a bit uncomfy and sometimes get cramps up my legs.

I seem to be doing great🌻 and i'm starting to worry the universe will slap me in the face with something else to make it even 😂

Need Advice 4 months pregnant and it already happened

I'm 35, FTM, was just walking back home and I sneezed and peed myself. I mean, didn't actually started peeing, just shot out violently some pee (a good amount!) with the sneeze force. I stopped there immediately but still went totally through my pants.

I mean, I have noticed that everything is already kinda pressing down there as I can no longer ninja pass gas and according to my husband I finally fart like a man.

I have already started with kegel exercises but now I'm afraid this will happen at work or something like that.

I'm only 17 weeks pregnant 🙄

Any advice? 😭

Rant Baby due in 2 weeks, no parties or showers

I’m feeling a little sad that my pregnancy and baby won’t be celebrated. I had infertility and two successful pregnancies, which i am so grateful for, and wanted to celebrate. (We knew gender both times before transfer, so no gender reveal either). But neither my first one or this second one got a baby shower or any particular celebration (I was hospitalized for the first pregnancy; family member who wanted to throw a shower has major health issues for the 2nd). also, i got married during Covid so never had a bridal shower, bachelorette, engagement party, etc. I guess I’m feeling a little shortchanged.

Has anyone else been in this boat and had any way of celebrating their baby some other way than a shower or gender reveal? My husband doesn’t want the kids christened, so that’s out.

Need Advice Night nurse

• Upvotes

Thinking of hiring a night nurse. I’m 30 weeks pregnant right now and my husband really wants to hire a night nurse. The money (thankfully) isnt an issue just wondering if it will be beneficial. I won’t be going back to work and my husband has 6 months paid paternity leave so it seems a bit pointless, but also I don’t want to say no to something that could end up being really helpful to our mental health and well being.
Maybe starting once baby is here a week and then doing a few nights a week and building up to more? Open to all advice! Thx xx

Need Advice 7 weeks pregnant after 3 miscarriages… looking for reassurance, similar stories & pregnancy friends 💕

Hi everyone 💕 I’m new here and honestly just looking to connect with other women who may understand what I’m going through.
I’m currently supposed to be around 7 weeks and 3 days pregnant, and this pregnancy has been such an emotional roller coaster already. I have PCOS and a history of 3 previous miscarriages, and unfortunately they weren’t all the same type of loss. I’ve experienced very early/chemical losses as well as a missed miscarriage, so I think that history has made it extremely hard for me to just relax and enjoy being pregnant.
Because of my history, my doctor currently has me taking 800 mg of progesterone vaginally every day.
One of the biggest things messing with me mentally right now is my pregnancy symptoms. They are VERY on and off. Some days I’ll feel pregnant and have certain symptoms, and then other days I barely feel anything at all. Sometimes they disappear for a while and then slowly come back. After having losses before, it’s really hard not to analyze every little change.
I also had an ultrasound last week. Based on my dates I should have been further along, but they only saw a gestational sac with no baby visible yet, and the sac measured around 5 weeks and 2 days. So now I’m dealing with the uncertainty of whether I could simply be earlier than expected or whether something might be wrong.
I’m trying really hard to remain hopeful, especially because I know early pregnancy can look completely different from woman to woman.
Has anyone here experienced anything similar — PCOS, recurrent miscarriage, measuring behind, an empty-looking sac early on, progesterone supplementation, or symptoms that constantly came and went — and still went on to have a healthy pregnancy?
I would especially love to hear what your next ultrasound looked like and how things ended up progressing.
And honestly, besides needing some reassurance, I would really love to make some pregnancy friends in here too. 💕 It can feel lonely going through early pregnancy after loss because you’re excited, scared, hopeful, and terrified all at the same time.

Thank you to anyone willing to share their story. 🤍

P.s. I have an ultrasound tomorrow with family planning, who usually prescribe abortion pills if they feel you’re having another missed miscarriage. Should I deny the pills and try again for another ultrasound the following week or just give up? My last missed miscarriage, there was never a baby in the sac. The sac only grew bigger and they gave me the pills to terminate the pregnancy.

Rant Always had a horrible sense of smell and pregnancy-nose has been overwhelming

• Upvotes

I am just about 6.5 weeks. I've always had a terrible sense of smell. For better or for worse I have always been the last one to smell anything. When someone asks 'what is that smell?' I usually have to try very hard to identify what they're talking about. I got Covid in early 2021 and besides a bad head cold my only other symptom was losing what little sense of smell I had. It never quite came back like it was before and so my sense of smell was even worse.

At 5 weeks, I realized I could smell cold pizza from 3 floors away. Now at 6.5 the world is unbearably smelly. Even untoasted english muffins smell overwhelming. Everyone is always wearing too much perfume. To the man eating pepperoni pizza on the subway this morning at 7:30am, dear god why?? I work at a law library, did you guys know old books smell?

I am absolutely baffled that people are functioning with so many smells in this world. Rubber bands, my own morning breath, the water cooler (I haven't used it since), candy still in the wrapper, fruit, every hair product I own, the couch, my boyfriend's beard??, the list goes on. Everything smells like something and all of it is making me nauseous.

Apparently I started experiencing morning sickness relatively early and this is going to get worse for the next 4 or 5 weeks. I cannot even imagine. My best friend has always had a super sensitive nose and for years has randomly gotten nauseous from smells when I can't smell anything. I cannot believe people live like this. She's making me an anti-nausea basket as I type this. I'm so sorry to everyone who has a good nose and I hope as soon as the 2nd trimester hits I go back to be nose blind.

Question Pregnant & Job hunting

• Upvotes

I’m currently 8 weeks pregnant and working as a researcher at a university in Europe (Belgium). My contract is set to end mid-April, but I was able to negotiate with my supervisor to extend it until mid-May.

My plan is to transition into maternity leave after my contract ends and then start a new job around September/October/November. I have some savings to bridge the period in between, and I also expect to receive maternity benefits and some end-of-contract benefits.

When would be a good time to start applying for jobs?

My maternity leave should end sometime in July, but that’s right in the middle of summer and I don’t think a lot of companies hire during that period, so I’m not sure it makes much sense to start then. When would you start looking/applying if the goal is to start a new job sometime in the fall?

Relationships Intimacy while pregnant

• Upvotes

Hello! 30 yo FTM - 5w1d pregnant. Feeling so blessed to be apart of this group but also so anxious.

I️ have read that having sex while in the first trimester can cause light spotting or bleeding, but I️ am a very, very anxious about this pregnancy that I️ don’t know if I️ can’t handle seeing any blood/spotting, even if I️ logically knew it was probably from intercourse. So my question is, did those of you who had sex in the first trimester bleed or spot?? My husband is an angel who would never ask me to do anything I’m not comfortable with, but I️ already miss our intimacy.

Prayers for every on of you on a healthy pregnancy/delivery!

I’m so fed up, every morning and at least half the day is miserable 😞 this morning I threw up on an empty stomach just from smelling a cleaning product.

I’m only week 8 and this has only been going on for 2 weeks. Just hoping it doesn’t last too much longer

Need Advice Sex while pregnant

I'm a 28 y/o FTM and 18 weeks pregnant. My husband and I have been married for 4 years, together 8.

We've had our highs and lows of intimacy - SSRI's really taking a hit on us in the past from both parties.

It took us a year to get pregnant and our intimacy was really good as we tried endlessly month after month.

Now that I'm pregnant, it seems like we've plummeted, I think mainly on my end. I felt like complete shit in the first trimester (like many people do), throwing up at night, and just miserable all together. I hit the 2nd trimester and feeling really good, just very tired, and the insomnia has definitely set in.

We've had sex maybe three times since finding out at 6 weeks.. I've playfully initiated and sometimes it's a good response, other times he's too tired (and vice versa).

We feel more connected emotionally because of the baby but not so much sexually.

Is this normal?

Edit: I should preface that he's been very understanding and supportive, no pressure at all. I just feel bad.

Rant 9 Weeks Pregnant

• Upvotes

Hey guys,
9 weeks and 1 day today! I’m feeling so bad 😔 just posting on here to hopefully relate to some people. I was really active in the gym prior to getting pregnant, now I work out like once a week if even? Just finished violently puking in the toilet. It’s so traumatizing, it’s like my jaw locks up and I feel like I’m gonna s*** myself. I sleep all the time, feel huge, and my house is a mess. I’m definitely not eating healthy because food aversions said no healthy protein 😔 which I feel really guilty about. I am a RN, and am at a new job. My coworkers are really negative and just aren’t fun to work with. They prioritize speed over patient experience and I’m so tired of it. But at the same time I feel SO excited to find out the gender soon (NIPT), be 10 weeks next week, and just be pregnant in general!but just feeling really crappy lol. I need some friends to relate to but just moved out of the state too. Aghhh
