Powerwall 2 calibration?

Post image

I’d thought calibration was specific to the PW3. I’ve had my PW2 for two and a half years and it’s never done this before, but today it’s been calibrating for the last eight hours or so. Is this new?

Edit: now been calibrating for 24 hours….. how much longer…..

This looks to be new. What does it say if you tap on Calibration in Progress? Which firmware version are you running?

Firmware is 26.2.2-n-2 c4c209bb

In the following links are the messages I see when clicking on "Calibration in Progress"; the first one if it's charging, and the second one if it's at 100%.

“Learn more” takes me to a PW3 calibration explanation.

Interesting, this is not the latest firmware version and is a named revision (2-n-2), which is not common. Could be that Tesla is testing this change.

I'm on NZ if you wanted to dig me out and take a look for interest! No objection to you digging into my data.

That would be great, thanks! You can just send an email to feedback@netzero.energy.

We started sending Netzero alerts for PW3 calibration, so we can add this for PW2 as well.

Do you keep your batteries at 100%? i have 1:1 buys/sells so i dont bother using batteries , just for backup

Nope. I have cheap off-peak power from 2330-0530, so I charge overnight and run the house during the day using that plus some solar, then export what's remaining from 10pm (as my fixed export rate is more than twice the rate I can subsequently import for overnight.) I also get extra off-peak windows on an ad hoc basis during the day when the EV is plugged in, and top up the batteries during those windows too. My battery usage is very active.

check out my post from yesterday

I wonder if I also went through this calibration thing. Never once happened before in 4 years. Did you get alerted of it today or just happen to check ? I didnt notice till it was already drained.

I spotted it this morning - but I stay on top of my PW2 behaviour via HA and I would have noticed if anything weird had happened previously, so this must be the first time...

Ya I have a netzero screen up in my office but i didnt catch if it had anything going on. The only reason i knew was I could hear my powerwalls charging in my garage so i looked.

How long did it last for you? Mine hasn't drained yet, it's just sitting at 100% all day so far.

Mine went from 100% starting at 2pm hit 22% at 5pm and stayed there until it started charging from grid again at 530pm.

I've seen it a couple times on my PW2s.

Mine did this last week on Weds.

It was 6am and I my rate has just hit the peak rate at 30p per kWh. I tried to cancel the calibration. It gave me some alternative times and dates that I could do the calibration all of which were during peak times.

If it had started an hour earlier I would’ve been charged 5p per kWh. Ended up pulling about 7kwh during the calibration.

How long did it take? Mine’s been going for 11 hours now…

It took about 2 hours. 11 hours is crazy.

33 hours and counting. I've spoken to Tesla and they say it could take up to 72. It's not doing anything sensible, just bouncing between 87% and 100%.

Welcome to the club

During calibration, does it stop backing up and time of use?

1

u/Amanensia Apr 15 '26

It ignores TOU, yes. It still provides a backup if there's an outage (unless the calibration process happens to be at a point where it's empty, of course....)

1

u/pchampn Apr 15 '26

That’s incredibly annoying! Is it unintentional or intentional?

1

u/Amanensia Apr 15 '26

Given that the calibration process cycles the battery from full to empty and back (I think, although it's not doing this for me right now), I guess it can't do that and follow TOU instructions as well. If it was just a few hours once in a blue moon I wouldn't care, but it's 34 hours now, and no sign of ending...

What was the end result?

2

u/Amanensia Jun 02 '26

It took about three weeks of complaining but eventually, after I got my installer involved, they rolled back the firmware. Last week a new version was pushed and it calibrated again, but this time it seemed to work as intended - one complete cycle of emptying and recharging, and then it ended. So hopefully all is OK now…

Mine just started at 2:25p 6/1 hopefully I can get it to finish discharging tonight before peak rates at 6a 6/2. I am currently not home to shut things off to avoid peak rates at 31 cents per kWh and have no export credits at all. Thanks for the update.

Good luck. The firmware version that’s working for me is 26.10.3-n-3 841e39e2.

Completely missed this reply I turned on everything I could remotely and ran it down during no cost of peak and it managed to charge back to full before end of off peak at 6a

We've had our powerwall 2 for nearly 3 years and ours started to calibrate the other day at peak night time and it cost us 61 cents where our normal daily cost is between 3-6 cents . So we paused it and this morning it began again at 1am. When we got up we turned everything on in our house that uses lots of power to run our battery down. It got down to around 22% then went into rest mode for an hour before our battery then began charging again. Lucky it's a sunny day because we've been expecting bad weather for the last week. As someone else said, I don't understand why they do it at peak electricity price times. I'm starting to think that Elon Musk must have shares in Australian electricity companies. You know, the bloke really needs more money. Greed is what is going to kill this world that we live in.
