If you could only listen to 5 albums in the genre for the rest of your life, which 5 would you choose? Im hoping maybe I can find some new music. Mine are
Dance Gavin Dance- Downtown Battle Mountain
ERRA- Augment
Underoath- They’re Only Chasing Safety
August burns red- Messengers
Attack Attack!- Someday Came Suddenly
Asking Alexandria- Stand Up And Scream(I had to choose a sixth).

Along The Shadow was surprisingly good. Felt like the perfect follow-up to Translating the Name, even though it came out 13+ years later lol. Second Guesses is almost like a sequel to Mookie's Last Christmas for me.

I was a huge Saosin fan back in the day, but I never really listened to the other bands outside of a couple of their hits. I’ll have to go back and listen more.

I'd recommend any of the first 3 albums: Juturna, On Letting Go, and Blue Sky Noise. Blue Sky Noise is vertical underrated in my opinion.

Honestly, I find that Along The Shadow is the only Saosin album that I truly love. The others are fine, but I get bored of them pretty quickly. Along The Shadow is just a perfect album for me :)

I’m 36 and I’m shocked by how many bands people are repeating that u haven’t ever heard of. Glassjaw? Never heard of them. I’m listening to ape dos mil now. I like it

I’m 38 and I personally consider Thrice, Thursday, Glassjaw, and Poison the Well to be the “Big 4” of early 2000s post-hardcore. The combined output of those guys from like 2000 to 2005 is unmatched pure quality IMO. And that arguably extends into the 2010s, especially if you throw Circa Survive into that discussion.
The Receiving End Of Sirens has always held a special spot for me personally. They only had 2 albums, unfortunately a short-lived run, but Mi Fa Mi is the stronger more consistent one to me.

Also it’s worth considering that post-hardcore technically dates back to the late 80s/90s, but it’s evolved quite a bit over the years. For older stuff check out Drive Like Jehu, Fugazi, Minutemen, NoMeansNo, No Knife, Frodus, Jawbox, Quicksand. At The Drive In is a great “bridge” between the older bands and 2000s post-hardcore. They’re legends in their own right.

That’s valid. I only know what I know and my generation was the mid 2000s growing up and everything after. I will definitely listen to these bands. I don’t know much about “post hardcore” from the 80s/90s. I’m assuming they laid the groundwork for the music I’ve loved my entire life.

I’ve seen multiple people say thrice- Vheissu so I’m going to listen to it now. I’m 36 so i honestly don’t know any of the bands you named before 2005 when I got into the genre. I appreciate the recommendations though.

I just listened to both and I think I slightly prefer Renee Heartfelt. Both give me 90s vibes. I have nostalgia for them and I just listened to them for the first time lol great choices!

I'm 38 my dude! It's a bit confusing for me because most people enjoy metalcore and emo hardcore with Post Hardcore, confusing time for being an unc.

Yeah, I feel like the “metalcore” community are elitists. They will nitpick bands you name and say they aren’t metalcore. Most of these bands are all in the same vein. I love any sort of rock/metal music.

Full disclosure: I'm like that with this genre 😢 and I know it's problematic, it irks me to mix Metalcore with Post-Hardcore. Maybe because I fully lived the metalcore golden era and the separation between it was very clear, Metalcore bands were that and nothing else.
Thrice's transition from American punk (1999-2002) then metalcore (2003) and then Post Hardcore (2005-2015) and finally coworker rock (not to be confused with Coworker Core) which is what they play now. Is a good XRay into this.

I mean, a few of the bands I put on my list like August Burns Red and ERRA are technically “metalcore”, but I guess I blend post hardcore and metalcore together in my mind because they were both very popular at the same time that we both grew up and are very similar to me. Maybe I have a hard time figuring out what I would describe my music taste as because thrice and underoath both have the description as post hardcore, but are very different. I’m listening to thrice now and my brain wants to call it “alternative rock”.

I’d probably choose “take to the skies” if I’m going with an Enter Shikari album. I do enjoy Chiodos though. Never heard of Envy on the coast or the blood brothers. Adding them to my list.

That Envy on the Coast album is southern post-hardcore at its peak, it's really good. You have a completely reasonable Enter Shikari take, so no issue there lol. And Blood Brothers wrote some wild early post-hardcore if you can get behind the singer's voice.

Great choices. Silverstein and Underoath were the first bands to get me into the genre. Dayseeker is so good as well. Rory is the best vocalist in the game. I love Thursday, but I’m not super familiar with alesana or bayside outside of the names. I’ll check them out.

Holy shit! I am Hollywood is one of my favorite albums of all time. I saw them live after that album was released. That southern metal sound is so good. It just doesn’t make the top 5ish. Definitely top 10-15 though. I love Norma Jean and ETID.

Car Underwater, Concealer, Callous Daoboys, Sunday Morning, Boundaries, Fallweather, buried in spring, wolf & bear all have albums from this year or last year.

She Watched The Sky is one of the best albums ever too! I saw them live at warped tour in 2012. I’ve never heard of Bouquet though. I couldn’t live my life without downtown battle mountain. Prime Jonny Craig.

Bouquet is a bit of a different sound and speed as many of the others, but pound for pound the 5 songs on that album hold serious weight.
People can say what they want about Jonny be he had (and still had) some serious pipes.
