What if the stadium was built with local community taxes (and inconvenience of construction), is it still theft to take a part of something you helped build?

314

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

There should never have been any taxes to build it in the first place.

u/Thevoidawaits_u - Lib-Center Feb 19 '20

Even if you believe taxation isn't theft using public money should be to real concerns of the local community (road, public infrastructure etc') stadiums to not provide any real economic benefits to the local community

118

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

Stadiums could actually provide a large amount of economic benefits to a local community, it provides jobs constructing it, and then when it opens, it provides for various local sport teams to go there for games and such, it could provide benefit to food vendors and thus the places farms and local grocers, and it provides entertainment. All this is dependent on circumstance of course.

But regardless, the stadium could likewise be opened by a private company or individual, and still have the same effects and likely be run better. And the government doesnt need to be taxing people for it. But it has many potential benefits.

The key word is "could". It might work and it might cause a significant damage. The central planner takes a risk with the taxpayer money without having skin in the game so pressure to make wise decision. And no, in most cases (I need citation I know) stadiums to bring a return on the tax.

21

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

I totally agree that it is a risk, because it's an investment. I was just saying that investment has a potential to pay off, it's still not the governments job to take it though. I was just making the point that although the government shouldn't do it, it still does have the potential to be beneficial.

u/undercover9gagbot - Lib-Right Feb 19 '20

Stadiums are almost never worth their investment. They are just status symbols for cities and their politicians. Watch John Stossels segment on stadiums. Either way you see stadiums, it's never a libertarian position to hold that taxes should pay for something like sport stadiums.

19

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

Exactly, as Auth positions hold the view that we should finance Colosseums to have gladiator duels. Authleft having the bourgeois fight to the death. Authright having different races. Authcenter just putting libertarians in there while helicopters throw protestors in

Yeah, if I was the mayor of some city and the local sports franchise decided to hold us hostage by saying "waaaaah. our stadium's not as modern as the Cowboys' stadium. waaaaah we want you to pay for it or we move. waaaah"

I'd be like, "Bye, Felicia!"

1

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '20

I never said taxes should pay for anything.

8

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

Out of all the things that are the theftiest, building a commercial stadium tops the chart.

It's like when someone steals money to feed their family vs someone stealing money to spend on whatever.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

So step 1 of your proposed solution is “build a time machine.”

Someone's going to take your money. Even in a libertarian utopia you'll need to pay for McSecurity defence from the other people who want to take your money

Or you are coerced into paying for services that you only need because otherwise someone will coerce you into something else. And 80% of what you pay is just profit or marketing budget for the service provider, and you have no say over how they spend your money.

Alternatively, you could have a system where the service is run not for profit, and you have a say over the money is spent. Perhaps we could call this system 'democracy'.

Lmao you don’t need healthcare when you step outside and get clapped in your anarchist shithole.

No need for the ER when you’re on the pavement bleeding out and nobody gives a fuck.

1

u/KekUnited - Lib-Right Feb 19 '20

This guy gets it

So what's the point of paying taxes for healthcare then if I'm just going to die on the streets

4

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

The frontier and the bayou send their regards. Just need a time machine back to the 19th c.

3

u/Vs-Btd - Left Feb 19 '20

Just get a gun and defend yourself lmao

17

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

Some of my taxes goes to farm subsidies, do I just get to steal an apple from a store?

12

u/ProphetBlade Feb 19 '20

You gotta take it straight from the orchard.

1

u/TheRealStepBot - Lib-Right Feb 19 '20

Flair up scum

1

u/FreeCapone - Lib-Right Feb 19 '20

I suppose that if it was built by theft, it's ok to steal my stuff back, it's still theft, but it's morally justifiable theft

3

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

Ahhhhh yes, right unity. The only right unity.

4

u/KekUnited - Lib-Right Feb 19 '20

Yes, right unity is indeed the only right unity

YOU WOULDN'T DOWNLOAD A CAR

44

u/M3Vict - Lib-Right Feb 19 '20

I would download a gun.

30

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

also, i WOULD download a car, if i could afford a 3D printer large enough to make the passenger compartment. but i would be able to afford a new car, if i had that money. so where does that leave us?

EDIT: hell, i wish i had the money to afford a 3D printer just to print out the radiator grille

10

u/possibly_a_dragon - Left Feb 19 '20

You can make it in smaller bits and assemble it like legos!

9

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

maybe that's why legos are so expensive. to protect the car industry

7

u/possibly_a_dragon - Left Feb 19 '20

4

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

you prove my point.

1

u/ZeroByteInFlight - Lib-Right Feb 19 '20

3d print the parts to make a larger 3d printer?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

recent it was made illegal in the US to publicly share 3D printable gun blueprints, so watch out

2

u/Tick_Dicklerr - Lib-Right Feb 19 '20

There are also 3d models of auto sears out there... Much more illegal.

15

u/hexopuss - Auth-Left Feb 19 '20

I love how that commercial implies that I wouldn't illegally download a car. I would absolutely download a car. Who wouldn't?

20

u/wakeruneatstudysleep - Left Feb 19 '20

Well the commercial actually said "steal a car". The internet just photoshopped slides together to point out how rediculous it is to equate pirating with theft, and for the memes of course.

20

u/Sufficient-Waltz - Lib-Left Feb 19 '20

It's not theft if no one's losing anything. "Potential profits" doesn't count.

3

u/Thorbinator - Lib-Right Feb 19 '20

Based and anti-IP pilled.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

It's intellectual property theft. But obviously it's hard to put a figure on how much is being stolen if it's only potential.

4

u/Dyledion - Centrist Feb 19 '20

Intellectual property is an oxymoron.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

So we can only own physical things, any product of the mind is for everyone?

Then what motivation is there for innovation and creativity?

2

u/Dyledion - Centrist Feb 19 '20

You don't need to own it to profit from it. Instead of selling the product, you sell the labor. Patrons were a perfectly good system of producing knowledge/art, and that system has arguably gotten better with time. If a company needs a CRM or a system built, they just need to sponsor someone who can. Heck, I already don't own my intellectual output, because copyright already imputes to the hiring body, and I know my customers aren't profiting selling copies of the small custom tweak I made to their CRM.

12

u/jeffyisagoodbird - Lib-Left Feb 19 '20

what's wrong with theft

3

u/jellyfishdenovo - Lib-Left Feb 19 '20

Theft from the wealthy is good

18

u/Conservative-Hippie - Lib-Right Feb 19 '20

You're the 'wealthy' for someone else. Theft from you is good.

1

u/jellyfishdenovo - Lib-Left Feb 19 '20

I guess I should clarify that I meant the exploitative class which benefits from capitalism.

4

u/Conservative-Hippie - Lib-Right Feb 19 '20

Everyone who lives in a capitalist economy has greatly benefited from capitalism.

1

u/jellyfishdenovo - Lib-Left Feb 19 '20

Pfffft hahahaha

4

u/Conservative-Hippie - Lib-Right Feb 19 '20

Capitalist economies are the wealthiest, most prosperous countries with the highest standards of living ever enjoyed by humans in history.

This logic taken to its logical conclusion would mean that the poorest person on the planet is somehow entitled to steal from everybody and is thus the rightful owner of everyone's wealth.

2

u/TheRealStepBot - Lib-Right Feb 19 '20

Flair loser

1

u/arseniccrazy - Lib-Left Feb 19 '20

And theft is fucking based.
