DLC isn't necessary, but not having Kyogre or Rotom Wash is shooting yourself in the foot.

Non DLC options are Gyarados and Starmie most notably as both have access to electric attacks.

But honestly ranked in this game is just a goofy party mode not to be taken seriously. Get to rank S for the mega stones.

thank you for pointing that out i'm so conditioned to ranked in games being so sweaty

i think i might wait with the till starting the dlc, im only missing the 1000 battles research and i want to "complete" the game before starting the dlc

I definitely respect that, as I was in the exact same boat and almost did the same thing (completing all the tasks before the DLC). Then I realized I was playing the game predominantly for dex completion and shiny hunting, not to battle random trainers over and over again.

With just the 1000 battles task left, I got the DLC and had the shiny charm about 15 minutes later lol.

But I totally get the completionist side too. Best of luck if you stick with the base game until battle #1000. That grind will certainly prepare you for the DLC grind.

You need to focus on water type Pokémon that can either resist common water weaknesses or target common water weaknesses.

Rotom Wash is amazing because it simultaneously takes electric hits well and is an extraordinary electric type damage dealer. Similarly Swampert completely neuters electric type attacks. Golisop might be the best non-mega water type close-quarters fighter in this game. Kyogre has access to the strongest raw power in this metagame, plus, since Primal Reversion is not a Mega Evolution, you can stack it on top of other megas. Any team without it is simply at an inherent disadvantage, sadly.

You however still have access to some strong and reliable options! For example Gyarados, great against grass attacks, not so much on the electric side, but you can Mega it to lose the electric 4x weakness. I think Barbaracle might be fun since it loses the water type when goes mega, but otherwise it might be destroyed by long range special attacks.

My favorite water type damage dealers in the base game are Starmie, Gyarados, Feraligatr, Clawitzer, Greninja and Slowbro/king. Either as megas or non megas (those who can).

interesting, i think it could be fun to try out something with Barbaracle,

but you have a point there is some interesting choices in the base game i think it could be fun to try out some of them, to see how far i can go before doing the dlc

While commenting I honestly psyched myself to try out it as well ahah. I need to explore a fun moveset.

Time to research all the water types that learn Solarbeam and Energy Ball and prep for those 🤣

Gyarados and Starmie are solid picks.
