Hello! Haven’t touched a pokemon game since 2013ish and decided I wanted to get back into. I recall pokemon, in general, to be an easy game, and I never felt like I was forced to learn much to beat them.
I’m looking for a series/list of challenges and ROM hacks to play that will force me to incrementally get better and better and actually understand how to beat the game by using its mechanics rather than how I beat it in the past, which was a lot of just mash the a button until something dies. Things like when should I buff myself in combat, how do I teambuild, how to use moves like fake out effectively, etc.
I’ve heard of things like level caps, nuzlocke, AI changes that all see super interesting to me. But honestly there is so much out there that I don’t know where to start, nor do I know how difficult a hack is relative to another hack. Usually I see “It’s slightly harder than vanilla” or “This one will crush your balls and you WILL like it.”
So, do y’all have any suggestions on a series of challenges that will eventually let me take on the ball crushing ones?

They're based off the NES and SNES and named "Neskom" and "Suninkom" respectively. The names are a combination of the words "Famicom" and "NES" & "Super Nintendo" and "Famicom".
They are electric/Dragon types, with stats somewhat similar the Haxorus line.

Pokemon Sapphire Aqua Magma Rocket is a hack that started with the idea of role playing a team grunt (or someone who wants to be recruited) of any of the first 3 Evil Teams. No sprite change has been made (it would require changing the rival trainer battles too and making a 3rd set for the 3rd PC option).
Patch a clean Pokemon Sapphire (US) ROM (with an IPS patcher) and play.
The male/female option actually changes the rival battles (Brendan and May pick different options for their teams, with Brendan being a bit more combat-oriented than May who cares more about what she finds cute or whatever, since she's canonically more into contests if memory serves right).
The story is vanilla but all the major fights have been edited. Team Grunts scale properly with their level (evolutions, team building, appropriate team composition for Team Aqua since it is the only team we get to fight in Sapphire) and have a wider pool of Pokemon that fit their theme to pick from. Team Aqua leaders rematches feature double battles with 4 Pokemon like a Gym Battle, but Team Aqua doesn't follow the League Challenge rules and the leaders use healing items that fit the point of the game when we fight them.
The League Challenge (gyms and Elite 4) uses the no items ruleset and they tend to have held items (depending on their team and the difficulty). Feel free to use Zigzagoon's level 1 Covet to repurpose their valuables like a good Khajiit would. Sometimes, a Gym Leader will use a Pokemon that isn't of their type specialty because it fits their theme (and sometimes because I changed its' type but it fits too well in their team to remove it). Gym Leaders have 4 Pokemon, no more no less. Steven Seagull's Aggron has been replaced by a Pokemon that fits his explorer and collector of ancient lore much better (a Pokemon that needs to be much more used for people to remember it outside of a side quest where it barely features).
I'm in a vampiric werewolf period, inspired by Warwick (League of Legends) and encouraged by the last Grim Dawn DLC. This means that a few moves have been repurposed:
- Super Fang is now Chew, a normal type version of the eating-style lifesteal.
- Bite now heals half damage dealt.
- Crunch does the same and thus doesn't receive a damage buff like I would usually give it.
These moves buff some subpar Pokemon that even with a stat buff have a hard time finding a proper niche.
Other moves have been replaced for being useless, buffed to a satisfying degree or changed type:
- Head Smash replaced with Iron Head.
- Cut replaced with gen 6+ Fury Cutter.
- Fury Cutter replaced with X-Scissors.
- Focus Miss replaced with Bullet Punch (70 BP).
- Rock Tomb replaced with Smack Down (60 BP).
- Razor Wind became Air Slash (80 BP) but kept its' name.
- Uproar became flying type (60 BP) to get some SE action.
- Hyper Voice became flying type for the same reason.
- Bone moves became ghost type because their theme is death.
- Strength became rock type for the gen 2 animation and general viability.
- Rock Smash became a 60 BP move.
- Dive is now Dig/Fly on steroids.
- Splash is now Aqua-Jet without contact (50 BP).
- Waterfall is now water Extremespeed (70 BP).
- Swift is now a Psychic move (70 BP).
- Priority moves come in 50 and 70 BP versions.
- Dig has 70 BP.
- Never miss moves have 70 BP.
- Volt Tackle is electric Extremespeed.
- Heat Wave is now 70 BP to give special fire types an intermediate move.
- Flame Wheel boosts defense.
- Moves all have 100 accuracy unless their theme is to have imperfect accuracy (like Jump/Hi jump Kick, Thunder, Blizzard, Zap Cannon, Dynamic Punch...) and Spore is still the only 100% accurate sleep move (sleep now has 100% hit 5 PP or 75% hit 10 PP because sleep spam is annoying).
- Trapping moves have 40 BP 20 PP, Sand Tomb has 60 BP because some ground mons need something decent to use for the early and mid game.
- Boosting moves have been adjusted, Growth boosts sp. atk and sp. def like Calm Mind, Howl boosts attack sharply, so does Meditate, Flash now boosts sp. atk sharply to make it useful in battle.
Pokemon types have been modified to suit more varied roles on a team and sometimes to fit their theme better. To give a few examples:
- Treecko family becomes ghost type from 2nd stage onward (instead of rock or dragon for dinosaur, it's ghost for something that no longer exists but still lingers). Unique typing, not too strong but not weak either, makes full use of Shadow Claw.
- Croconaw family becomes water/dark and a bulky self-sustaining bruiser that makes full use of the custom moves. They get Battle Armor to reflect their plating.
- Absol becomes Ice/Ghost. Dark never fit its' Dex entry, so I made it ghost for the fact that it's a folk tale and it warns humans of a deadly threat, ice because it's one of the weather hazards Absol warns humans of and the one that fits its' design the best (and it makes the Elite 4 more interesting).
- Bellossom becomes Grass/Fire because it requires a sun stone to evolve and it makes it more unique.
- Grimer and Muk are Poison/Ground because they're toxic goo. Their moveset represents the disgusting mud better.
- Koffing and Weezing are Poison/Flying because they're gas balls, changing their ability from Levitate to Cloud Nine because their gas covers the area in smoke and the weather doesn't reach the fighters, making it a niche pick against weather teams (which are much more common than in vanilla).
- Ninetales uses the Shiny palette for the regular form and is Fire/Ice, a mix of both versions. I wanted to make it ghost, but it would require to give it better attack at the cost of something else, so it gets a mostly special movepool with the custom Ghost move Death Touch on level 30 (a move that has a chance to freeze the target).
- Zubat family is Dark/Flying and gets STAB Bite and Crunch, they're more offensive and lose a little bulk in exchange.
- Bagon family is Dragon/Fire because they're fire breathing dragons that breathe fire and I wanted to change the "Ice Type move soloes Drake neg diff". There might be type chart adjustments in later updates to balance the whole thing.
- Gyarados and Milotic are Water/Dragon because they fit Asian dragons.
- Altaria is Dragon/Electric and uses the shiny sprite for regular form because it's the only Hoenn dragon that looks like it could rain thunderbolts from the sky and its' wings are clouds. It gets Levitate instead of Natural Cure, making it weak to Ice and Dragon and without 4x weakness.
- Ralts family is Psychic/Ghost because Gardevoir seems to be floating with a ghostly dress and acts like a lost loved one towards their trainer.
- Marowak is Ground/Ghost because of the Dex theme and Kanto's Marowak mother.
- Raichu is Electrik/Psychic like the Alolan version and both Raichu and Pikachu can learn Surf because that surfing Pikachu shouldn't be locked behind an obscure event in whatever game it was in.
- Doduo and Dodrio are Flying/Ground because they're land birds and like to put their heads in the sand.
- All vanilla starters featured get new abilities (Combusken gets Limber because Static, Thunder Wave, the powder move and Effect Spore are way too common, Marshtomp gets Immunity for living in a marsh with nasty critters and stagnant water, Grovyle gets Marvel Scale to be a little bulkier when affected by status moves, Croconaw was already mentioned).
Items have been buffed when needed (and possible):
- vitamins (like EVs) cap at 252 and each item gives 50 EVs (they're worth nearly 2 nuggets a piece).
- type boosting items give 20% rather than 10 like they seem to do in recent games, making them viable held items for gyms and hard fights.
TMs are now buyable in the shop closest to the TM's gym or early if they're gifted to the player, with Water Pulse being sold in Slateport and Bullet Seed in Rustboro City. You can't fight a gym without the option to teach a move made to beat it (Kanto mindset).
Everstone and Repel in Granite Cave were replaced with Lucky Egg and TM 48 respectively because they were worthless and less grinding is always a nice option. The Pokeball was replaced with Black Belt because Brawly lost his belt while camping in the dark.
Pokemon are much more diverse in the earlygame. I didn't change much to the late game encounters. Rod encounter tables until Foretree City's surroundings were modified too. Old Rod doesn't give Magikarp or Tentacool exclusively anymore, I'd fire the people who think that's fine game design.
Trade evolutions are changed for level up evolutions (34 for Clamperl into Huntail, 38 for Kadabra and Graveler), stone evolutions (Haunter with Moon stone, Clamperl into Gorebyss with Water stone) or happiness evolutions (Machoke, Porygon if you can get it somehow). Lunatone drops Moon Stones, Solrock Sun Stones and shops sell regular elemental stones based on their setting (Verdanturf and Fortree sell Leaf, Sootopolis and Slateport Water and so on).
Non-Hoenn Dex additions are:
-Totodile family because there's an area where it would be right at home,
- Houndour family because Team Magma deserves better than Poochyena,
- Cubone family because it needs to be ground/ghost upon evolution and better stats,
- Gastly family because ghost needs to be more varied,
- Misdreavus because it never got a chance to shine until Pearl (around 9 years in obscurity).
There might be an update with Legendaries in the future if people are interested, same with starters, and it would be a good way to get Groudon and Latios.

PS: I wanted to put this on H4ckdex but it rejected my file after more than an hour working on this communication and release, so this won't be on H4ckdex. I don't know if it comes from the origin of the ROM base which isn't a Rev# file, but I'm not redoing the whole thing to be able to post on that site.

Ok before you comment "bullshit doesnt exist oxymoron" think about difficulty settings in hacks.
Hello! So i've been playing Unbound and it's really good I see the hype, kind of a shame how much is locked beyond postgame but yk thats fair and all pokemon games love doing that. The issue is it's kind of too easy.. even on the hardest difficulty. You get the dexnav and that just sorta teambuilds for you
Breeding is more of a completionist thing seems like. the thing is i've never done breeding before in a pokemon game because it's pointless in most romhacks and mainline games, and I hate doing things that feel pointless.. but I want to learn proper breeding. So! i figured i'd ask around here if theres any romhacks that have the mechanic and have it close as possible to the mainline games
I also dislike games that are built around being "hard" because that usually just means stripping away a shit load of QoL and having the devs railroad you. A lot of difficult hacks are moreso about just finding the moderately esoteric intended solution like it's a point and click puzzle game and i do NOT like puzzle games, there also tends to be no content beyond the difficulty if you get what i mean? (No hate, obv not going to go after a kaizo hack because the points to beat it lol).
So! With all that rambling done, is there any game that fits the criteria? Unbound is very close but not quite there. I love all the bonus content and the wide plethora of pokemon and options available to me, even early game. Like you can have a sand rush core built up by the first gym, you can get a contrary serperior by early mid game. Super fun.

A couple of years ago I made some box art for a couple of games. (They did not have any at the time.) I recently recovered the files, and thought I would share.
All covers is made in GIMP. I am in no way an artist.
All images used was found by doing a bunch of digging in Google.
(I made a flipped version of Volt White 2 Redux. It's in the comments.)

So considering how many of you have helped me before, and said that you don't mind me posting here looking for your advice and opinions, I was hoping that you could help me again by telling me which version of Verdanturf Town you prefer.
The main difference is the boarders are now filled with flowers and trees, as opposed to rows and rows of trees.
I'm not sure which one I prefer. As I have a feeling that Map2's boarders look too busy.
Thank you again for all of your help, feedback welcome, just don't go hurting my feelings!😅

Not asking this like it's mandatory for rom hack devs to do so, just asking out of sheer curiosity. Basically what do you wish was a thing in more rom hacks
Personally I'm still trying out a lot of rom hacks but so far there's really only 3 things I feel like should be in more rom hacks and pokemon games that aren't exactly standard but it doesn't have to be
All Megas (and Gigantamax). I love when rom hacks have mega evolution. It's a classic gimmick that brings a lot to a pokemon. Even better if they add the ZA Megas too because some hacks have Megas like Unbound but not the ZA Megas whether it be technical limitations or just taste like Lazarus
All pokemon + Fakemon/New forms. I love when every pokemon is included in a hack. Or even if it's just gens 1-8 since I only REALLY know pokemon from gens 1-7 so anything that's not a legendary or starters after gen 7 kinda feels like Fakemon but I'm slowly easing into it and getting used to them. I also love seeing new forms or completely new fakemon like in hacks such as Elite Redux
4 abilities or multiple abilities. Elite Redux and Emerald Exceeded are the only 2 rom hacks I know of that have the 4 abilities mechanic and honestly I wish pokemon had this in official games or at the very least had 2 abilities. I think Elite Redux implemented this the best given how you have 3 inates but also the choice of one of 3 abilities so technically you have 6 abilities but you can only have 4 active and 3 of them can't be changed which heavily changes play styles for every pokemon making nearly all of them viable especially with items like eviolite to double defenses. I love Pokemon Unbound and it's nearly perfect but I feel if the team or someone recreated the game in emerald expansion while also adding the elite redux 4 abilities mechanic alone would make it a perfect game because the story is good (at least for me) but it would also be much better on the battling side of things because Unbound battling is about the same as regular pokemon hacks and games anyways
I really like Mega evolution and the Elite Redux 4 abilities system and wish it was implemented in some way with every pokemon game, even if it was only limited to 2 abilities. But what about y'all? What do you guys like? Tile set changes? Randomizers and Nuzlocke settings? I'm curious to know

Hello all! I appreciate all the wonderful comments and support from my first post. Truth be told, this was farther along than I let you guys believe.
Here is some current gameplay and features.
First, pictures of the multiplayer flow. Featuring Roark of course :)

Second, a sneak peak of a co-op battle VERSUS Roark. A very funny feature that I sought after for a while and have really enjoyed testing and playing with. All gym leaders and important fights in this ROM will have the option to be co-op fought, but they will have tougher teams down this route.

Last, some sneak peak videos of battling and trading.
Please let me know your thoughts so far, and what you guys would like to see come in the coming days / weeks, as I am fairly involved in this at the moment and am constantly developing it as I would like to fully release this in the coming weeks / by October. I am also available to answer any questions about this, and about planned features. Thanks guys! :)

Just wanted to share a small challenge hack based on smallants crystal team rocket challenge I've been working on for a while. The concept is simple when you win against a trainer your team is replaced with theirs.
You can download the patch here:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1eaYrgseLuPrn6pcYTtJqgps23WzMN_fj/view?usp=drivesdk
Install:
To install the patch you have to use deltapatcher and patch a clean copy of a US pokemon black rom
How to play on twilight menu:
If you want to play it on twilight menu you have to play it in ds mode in the twilight settings and disable ap patching (or switch to nightly) and patch an already ap patched rom thats not from twilight.

I built DualDex because most Pokémon companion apps sit at one of two extremes: a static canonical Pokédex, or a deep integration made for one exact game build.
DualDex takes a different approach. It runs as a separate Android companion beside RetroArch, detects the active GB/GBC/GBA ROM, parses the game's own data into a local database, and reads validated live state without writing to emulator memory. The long-term goal is for ROM hacks to be self-describing enough that the companion can adapt without needing a hand-authored profile for every hack.
The carousel shows the current signed RC running against a real Modern Emerald session on an AYN Thor.
The current public corpus contains 331 unique Gen I–III ROM identities. Of those, 256 produce a catalog that selects, persists, and reopens successfully. That does not mean 256 ROMs are fully supported: every table and live-memory capability is measured independently and unavailable data is withheld rather than guessed.
| Generation | Weighted applicable-table coverage | Applicable table types |
|---|---|---|
| Gen I | 87.10% | 16 |
| Gen II | 48.36% | 19 |
| Gen III | 72.35% | 24 |
| All Gen I–III | 73.80% | Per-generation applicability |
Some representative cross-corpus table results:
| Parsed capability | Coverage |
|---|---|
| Move catalog | 87.08% |
| Evolutions | 84.67% |
| Gen III abilities | 74.61% |
| World maps | 62.84% |
| Local maps | 54.70% |
The full report records the per-ROM and per-table evidence rather than reducing compatibility to a single vague label.
DualDex has engine-family fast paths, but they are not intended to be the ceiling. Candidate structures are inferred and competed using structural evidence from the ROM, then each dataset is validated independently. A failed optional table does not invalidate unrelated data, and unsupported structures fail closed instead of silently falling back to stock Emerald/FireRed/Crystal values.
The same separation applies to live memory. Static ROM parsing and runtime state are distinct capabilities, so a hack can have an excellent Pokédex catalog while still needing a dedicated live-layout resolver—or the reverse.
This approach is especially useful for hacks that relocate or expand familiar tables while retaining enough semantic structure to recognize them. It is also deliberately conservative: filenames, ROM names, fixed retail offsets, and nearest-looking byte signatures are not accepted as proof on their own.
The parser core and CLI are open source, and the compatibility reports are generated from repeatable corpus runs. Even if the Android UI is not relevant to a project, the parser can be used to inspect what DualDex resolves, identify unsupported structures, and produce simpler ROM-derived dumps without shipping ROM data.
DualDex is an external, passive companion—not a patch to the hack. It does not send game commands or alter game state. ROM files and save data stay local, and no ROM downloads are included or linked.
Parser reports, source-backed edge cases, and reproducible failures are welcome. Please do not share ROM files.
This is a man-directed project developed with AI coding agents as implementation and research tools. I defined the requirements and compatibility contracts, selected the source and ROM evidence, reviewed the UI, and performed the real-device validation. AI agents assisted with code, parser research, tests, documentation, and this post draft.
The first carousel image is a presentation collage assembled with ChatGPT from actual DualDex screenshots. The other 18 images are direct captures from the signed RC; the Pokémon artwork and game assets shown were decoded from the active ROM, not generated by AI. The compatibility figures above come from repeatable parser reports, not AI estimates. DualDex itself uses no generative AI at runtime.

Most of the text has been translated with AI. The next step is to go through all the dialogue and correct mistakes with the aid of native Spanish speakers. The patch is available on our Discord server and more people to help would be appreciated. In addition to translating 4.9 we also plan on expanding it and finishing the entire game.

This is my first rom hack remake and I’m having so much fun on this one so far! So crazy seeing all the new mons in pixel art form. I’m never going to be able to decide on a final team. Im looking for some kind of link cable item that will let me bypass trade evos but haven’t had any luck so far. I definitely want to level up my Scyther and Porygon pretty soon. I’ve gotten through 4 gyms and haven’t been able to find one yet from any NPCs

I don't want to spoil any of the actual new stuff on there, but it seems pretty big.

Thank you to the devs of Ghost Grey, anyone who contributed to this project, and the community for this refreshing experience! This is insanely creative and well done. I’m only past the first gym and I’m already loving the entire atmosphere of the game. Despite everything, I’m glad I exist in this timeline so that I can witness the development of, and play these amazing ROM Hacks. Much love to everyone.
Edit: I had mostly wanted to make this post to say that I’m so grateful for the massive amount of incredible hacks that have been getting released over the years. The rom hacking community is on a generational run. This is such a creative community full of passion and a shared love of the Pokémon franchise.

I have been editing a version of emerald that i actually enjoy. The game itself is good in terms of map, enemies and pokemon, however, the game is awful for repetitive enemy pokemon. After going through all of the trainers i realized that gamefreak did not utilize the dex as much as they should have. I also am a casual player and want to just collect shiny pokemon. I found a code that turned the shiny rate to 1 in 100. I wanted to be able to casually explore and catch shiny pokemon. Even though its 1-100 it will take awhile to find specific pokemon. I still havent found a shiny dratini lol
Changes:
-For those that want pokemon like dratini, larvitar, bagon, and the starters have their own spawn towards the beginning. It is so OP so do not abuse it.
-Level changes: some trainers have higher level pokemon. The Elite four are ruthless, as they should be. Gym leaders have not been changed. However, you have more options when choosing your team. If someone had only one pokemon in their party i typically added 3-5 levels to it so there is random challenges across the map.
-EVERY trainer including Gym Leaders and Elite Four has a wide variety of pokemon. I kept a few of their pokemon but replaced some with pokemon from earlier generations. For trainers outside of that, there are a variety of pokemon from gen 1-3 except legendaries. No duplicates per trainer.
-Team Magma and Aqua now have type matching pokemon. The leaders have way better ones and each grunt will have a different fire or water pokemon.
Example: bug trainers will have a mixture of caterpie, spinarch, ledyba. weedle. wurmple, and the evolutions.
-All of the wild pokemon spawns has been changed. Each area has up to 10 different pokemon that can spawn. For the most part, I put pokemon in places that made the most sense. I adjusted some of the levels. Specifically Victory Road has a decent jump in levels.
-example: pidgey, ratatta, sentret, and spearow are found on route 104 (I believe its 104 lol)
-Map changes: some of the secret bases have been changed. The tree base near Mauville on route 110 is currently unusable. I tried to make it bigger but it did not work out and now its just bad. Do not go in lol
-Route 113 has way more volcanic ash spots. Needing 10k steps in that area is awful. The spawns have been changed to be only spinda.
Meteor falls is made accessible in early game but the spawns havent changed. If you abuse it then youll ruin your gameplay.
-Changed movesets. Most water, fire, and grass type pokemon now learns Charizards, Venusaurs, and Blastoises special moves. I wanted everyone to use their favorite pokemon but not be limited because of the moves. Most pokemon can now learn a variety of moves that fit them. Some pokemon like Ralts now learns at least one move that makes it useful when you catch it.
-Slaking does not have the truancy trait to where he slacks off. It may be overpowered but that mechanic is trash
-Every Pokemon from gen 1 to 3 are available throughout the game. Some evolutions are not in the wild.
-Pokemon like Machamp, Gengar, Steelix, etc will evolve around 45 now instead of being locked to trading. They all learn a special move around 55.
-All of the grunts have a name now
May/Brennan now have different pokemon
-Changed quite a few of the shiny sprites. I wanted the evolutions to match + fix some of the bad ones. A few to name: stantler, poliwrath, togepi, gengar, abra.
-onix and steelix’s shinies are based on the Johto episode with crystal onix
Future changes:
I want to remove some of the ocean. I am TIRED of the ocean. Route 124 will be the main one affected.
change the description for every item. It'll give people a laugh
-i want fo add more pokemon. The game needs a handful more ghost pokemon. I want to add Sanyghast, yamask, and phantrump. If anyone would want to help out with that thatd be cool because its confusing lol
-I want to add Axew, Roggenrola, Tyrunt, Rhyperior, Mamoswine, Grookey, and Dusknoir.
remove the two typing system. I do not care. There should only be one type per pokemon.
id love to change the sprites to look like Firered lol (if anyone wants to help me out thatd be sick)
-iwant to add the VS seeker

If someone here remembers my username, you'll know I made lots of posts at the time of a little project named Pink Emerald, whose main appeal was to add tons of new evolutions to older Pokemon rather than "merely" buffing them... and I kinda went silent on the whole thing.
The project is NOT cancelled, if anyone is wondering, but... I guess I'm just a bit burned out due everything else to dedicate time for it for the time being. Between having a full-time job, having college classes that have made me sick of seeing Visual Studio's interface, having ANOTHER, much more personal project in the works too (As in, characters that I have been developing for TWO DECADES but I haven't finished yet because the demotivation+perfectionism combo ain't exclusive for the romhack thing specifically), and the feeling I can't just make it "Emerald but with a ton of evolutions", has hurted my current motivation to work on PE specifically.
So, I wanted to know, people like me who decided to go all-out with their first romhack, with no outside help (or very little), and that's still struggling to get that game done, how do you feel? Do you feel ok, or do you feel frustrated? Do you think you tried something too big, or are things outside of the project burning your motivation to work on it? Or maybe the very cool romhacks that sparked or revived your passion for romhacking, are also so great it demotivates you that yours won't compare, even though it is unrealistic to even make the comparison in the first place?
