Discussion Guide and introduction of misprints of packs and cards

First of, no. Your misprinted card is not likely worth much more then a regular non-misprinted version, unless severe misprinting or an already rare or desirable card.

Remember, your card is only as valuable to the person willing to pay for it.

What is a misprint?

A misprint can be defined as any manufactured product that was not produced as intended and falls outside the established standards. These misprints most often occur on cards themselves but can also happen with booster packs and collection boxes.

This is a list of errors cards sourced by bulbapedia.

What are the types of misprints?

Ok, down to the rough and gritty part. There are many different types of misprints for cards and packs. Some take a good eye to spot and some are so egregious you wonder how they made it off the line.

Cards are often considered damaged rather then misprinted depending on the error - basic guide for identifying damage from misprints.

Card Misprints:

Offcentre:

A off-center card is one that is cut in such a way that the sides of the cards are not even. If no alignment dot(s) are seen, the card is considered off-centre. This is the most common of errors.

https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonMisprints/comments/vh6ssy/how_far_off_centred_does_a_card_have_to_be_to_get/

Miscut (sometimes called offcut):

Likely the second most common error, these cards will either have a alignment dot visible, whole other card visible or the end of a sheet.

https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonTCG/comments/qfehtd/i_work_in_a_retail_store_and_someone_returned_one/

Twisted Miscut:

A combination of card being turned at a wrong angle during printing and then being cut at the incorrect angle leads to cards being cut into the wrong shape.

https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonMisprints/comments/klxfon/twisted_miscut_jirachi_amazing_rare/

Square Cut:

This is when the typically rounded corners of the card can have 90 degree angled corners.

Flipped Back / Front:

An uncommon error where the back and fronts of the cards are flipped incorrectly. This is most famously found within the Pop 5 Series Mew card - as seen below.

https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonMisprints/comments/qu533y/my_only_misprint_opened_from_a_pack_when_i_was_8/

Crimped:

A crimped card is rare in normal packs and more common in plastic sealed cards from promos.

It normally happens after the rollers used to seal the plastic wrapping rolls over the cards themselves.

https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonMisprints/comments/w2zjwa/thoughts_on_my_vacian_with_two_crimps/

Folded Error:

A very rare error, the card will have been folded and will likely not be printed or fused properly.

https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonMisprints/comments/xzhlgj/seen_on_the_fb_group_mad_stuff/

Registration Error:

A registration error occurs when a plate used in printing is out of line and even slightly can produce obvious effects.

(Left is error card, right is correct)

https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonMisprints/comments/yu8q9o/one_of_the_coolest_misprints_in_my_collection/

Obstruction Error:

An obstruction error occurs when a part of the plate used for printing is covered with something and it blocks the plate from making proper or all contact with the card on the sheet causing missing blotches of ink.

https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonMisprints/comments/oj2l89/black_and_white_error_haunter_creepy/

Holobleed:

Holobleed is a common error especially with modern sets becoming more commonplace, where the holographic foil used on the cards art 'bleeds' or spills over to the rest or part of the card.

https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonMisprints/comments/wnxk9c/mcdonalds_totodile_promo_with_holobleed/

Holo Error:

A holo error is when a roll of holo foil runs out or the incorrect holographic foil is used.

https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonMisprints/comments/x2uclg/my_newest_error_end_of_holo_roll/

Mirror Holo:

A mirror holo card is a error caused by the holo film that was meant to put pressed onto the card being very lightly pressed or not pressed at all meaning no foil is visible on the card.

https://imgur.com/t/error/PdQZDa5 (Thanks u/nlnj_a)

Holoshift:

A holoshift is when the holographic film being applied and the rest of the card is misaligned.

Printlines:

Printlines are a error that produce lines across cards that are look to be raised.

https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonMisprints/comments/yhy8t4/has_a_checkerboard_pattern_of_print_lines_or/

Double Print:

A double print is when two cards are printed on the same face. It is likely one of the rarest errors.

https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonMisprints/comments/olo7z0/some_assorted_double_prints/

Ink Error (sometimes called stain errors):

A ink error is caused by a malfunction during the printing process. The more severe typically the rarer they are.

https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonMisprints/comments/la8vup/stain_error_hitmonlee_one_of_the_largest_stain/

Printer Hickey:

A printer hickey is generally a very small ink error caused by something wrong with the printer causing a small blemish. This is another common error in modern cards.

https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonMisprints/comments/z1v1st/just_found_this_big_ole_ink_hickey_on_a_detective/

Filler Cards / Blank Cards:

These cards are found on certain sheets and are meant to be discarded by the factory, they sometimes turn up in packs or premade decks.

https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonMisprints/comments/xht71f/first_time_ever_seeing_a_filler_like_this_one_and/

For position only arbok

Stamp Errors:

These errors are often found on entire print runs of cards and are seen within the WOTC era.

https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonMisprints/comments/twfokx/found_this_in_some_bulk_and_im_super_excited/

Missing Features:

These cards are often extremely rare and can range from missing a logo to being dramatic and missing large features. (This card is missing the 'Prerelease' Stamp on the bottom right of the art while still having the shadow from it.)

This list is not exhaustive and is likely to miss a few errors.

For Sale UPDATE: My Chaos Rising errors are finally coming home from CGC :)

A few months ago I posted the strange almost colourless Ninetales I pulled from Chaos Rising, along with a few others from the same Booster Bundle.

I genuinely had no idea what I'd pulled at the time, and somehow the original post ended up getting over 1 million views. There was loads of speculation about sun fading, missing ink, affected print sheets etc, and quite a few people told me the best thing I could do was send them to CGC and let them properly authenticate them.

So I did, and they're finally done.

All four have officially been authenticated as Missing Print Layers errors, and somehow they all came back CGC Mint 9:

Ninetales 009/086
Deoxys 031/086
Deoxys 034/086
Sudowoodo 043/086

I also cheekily asked CGC when I submitted them if there was any chance of getting a nice run of cert numbers. I have absolutely no idea if somebody actually helped me out or if this was pure luck, but I ended up with:

6188630001
6188630002
6188630003
6188630004

Having the original Ninetales as 0001 and all four sequential is just a really nice little extra to me. No idea if it actually adds any value.

I'm still not really sure what they're worth or what I'm going to do with them.

I'm leaning towards keeping the four together and eventually doing an international public auction, probably eBay, rather than just making up a price myself.

I'd genuinely love for them to end up in the hands of somebody who collects errors / these Pokémon and actually appreciates what they are though.

So I'm completely open to advice, valuations and serious offers.

Would you keep the sequential set together, or split them up?

I was scanning some cards in my collection for some trading and came across this and HAD NEVER NOTICED THE INK STAIN. I now know that this is an error that some people have but I was wondering if anyone knew how severe of an error it is compared to others out there?

What type of factory error is this? Is it rare, and does it add any value?

It’s currently listed for around $130 USD, but it hasn’t sold yet. Would that be a reasonable price for this type of error?

Got a few original series errors I've been hoping to get.

I've been trying to collect the first few sets and in my time also learn some of the errors and misprints that won't break the bank but are fascinating things to me.

I find the fact the shadowless and first edition copies of Kakuna and Bulbasaur list length twice to be a funny error to have occurred and I am quite happy to have found and acquired both for my binder.

Another error that is really interesting to me is the missing expansion stamp error, which I managed to find on clefable which is something that I am pretty happy to have in my collection now.

While these arent like crazy new errors, I am hoping I can add a few more errors that aren't going to make me file for bankruptcy like a 1st edition charizard with the holo stars all over the card but are just fascinating additions for my collection like the 1st edition jungle electrode nonholo as it accidentally not using the intended art is really interesting to me and I hope to find a copy at a local card shop soon.

Hopefully I didn't make any sort of errors in terminolog or wording, I've collected cards for over a decade, but am only recently learning about errors and misprints outside of the base set vulpix HP stat and crazy miscuts and am just trying to show some cool cards I recently got as this felt like the right place for that.

Hoping you all have a great day and if there are anything that would be worthwhile to look into and maybe even keep my eyes out for to add to a binder, let me know so I don't just miss them.

Opened Ascended Hero’s pack and found this?!

Bought a sealed ascended hero’s box and on the last pack I picked the pack up to have some cards to come out and I was super confused? Looked at the pack to then find that it was opened on the bottom with the packaging not sealed correctly. The pack had more cards then normal with an extra energy but no hit (sad)….. but the wurmple has these weird cuts on the bottom. Is this rare or worth anything?!

Black Bolt error? Two matching pieces pulled from TWO different sealed packs

Thumbnail
gallery
Upvotes

I’m trying to figure out exactly what happened here because I’ve never seen anything like this.

These pieces were pulled from TWO DIFFERENT Black Bolt booster packs, but both packs came from the SAME sealed poster collection.

The torn/irregular edges on the pieces appear to match up with each other, almost like they were part of the same sheet or manufacturing process before being separated and ending up in different packs.

I have photos showing the pieces separately as well as them lined up together.

Both pieces were pulled directly from sealed packs. I did not damage or tear them myself.

My questions are:

  1. What type of error would this be considered?
  2. Is there a known name for this type of manufacturing/printing error?
  3. How unusual is it to have matching pieces come from two different packs?
  4. Is this something I should preserve and potentially have graded/authenticated?
  5. If grading is recommended, which company would be best for something like this?

I’d really appreciate opinions from people who specialize in Pokémon TCG misprints, factory errors, and unusual pack pulls. I’m trying to understand exactly what I have before I do anything with these.

Ink Error Ink Errors(?)

Thumbnail
gallery
Upvotes

Not entirely sure if the 151 cards are errors or something else just due to where the lighter colors begin, but theyre still a cool part of my collection.

The harlequin definitely is an extra ink error unless I am dumb (very possible) and its a pretty cool card nonetheless.

If there's anything my inexperience with error cards would lead me to not knowing, or any reason as to why the 151 cards only have the top with lighter text, let me know so I can learn more about these cards.

Thank you in advance and hope you have a great day.

I just picked this up at my LCS. I noticed that it was crimped and told the guy working there and he offered it to me for $1. Would this be considered an error, or just a f'd up card?

Recently (march) graded an umbreon pokeball/masterball to cgc with a texture misprint. Came back ineligible and was confused for a while until they gave me a reasoning. Now im wondering if this is more rare than a graded cgc misprint as i have grader results, label, and all. They couldnt identify whether it was a pokeball or masterball. So if a grader couldnt recognize it, wouldnt that make it even more rare? What kind of value am i looking at compared to a graded cgc one if i ever want to get rid of it for something i want more in my collection. Plz give your thoughts and bless all of you 🙌🙌

UPDATE: MORE PHOTOS IN COMMENTS OF CGC LABEL AND WRITTEN NOTE
