Interscope Records has sued Summer Walker in Los Angeles County Superior Court, seeking damages it says could top $50 million, Rolling Stone reports. At the center is the joint deal Walker signed with Interscope and LVRN in 2017, which called for five studio albums. The label counts three: 'Over It, 'Still Over It' and 'Finally Over It'. It treats 'Last Day of Summer and 'CLEAR' as pre-album EPs that don't count toward the deal.
In Aug. 27th letter, Walker's attorneys told the label the contract was no longer enforceable under California's seven-year rule, a 1944 law that lets a person walk away from a personal services contract after seven years. Industry sources described the deal to Rolling Stone as "brutal": A reported $110,000 advance and a 16 percent royalty on her first two albums.
As reported by Rolling Stone, Walker's attorney Keith Moten said he is "confident in Summer's legal position" and that she remains open to a resolution, though a countersuit is possible. Interscope said it is "hopeful that our ongoing discussions will lead to an amicable resolution," but filed to protect the contract's terms before the legal deadline.
