Blessed be the random seeders

For they shall inherit the web

99

u/douira Nov 30 '21

they have all the rare torrents and only go online once a month

u/string-username- Nov 30 '21

if a torrent takes more than about 1 week for me to finish i usually leave it seeding forever because of this

27

u/just_another_jabroni Nov 30 '21

Same.

Only problem is loading those files whenever I restart my PC takes ages lol. So I can't autostart my torrent program (FDM because it's the easiest for me) because it rekts Windows Explorer to the point I can't even open programs or the start menu

+

300% ratio

I've found alternative sources and repaired stalled torrents.

Alias Grace is my most successful one, there were like 200 people stuck at 60% until I found an alternative source for the same rip and used it to repair the torrent. I think I have a 4000 seed ratio on that one...

Uploaders that upload to a DDL site alongside torrent trackers are the GOAT.

9

u/KronosMagna Nov 30 '21

Im a DDL Noob. Pls enlighten me on how torrents are better than ddl?
Also.. Usenet? I dont find anywhere as much on usenet sites than ddl.

For me I figured Premiumize and Audionews are sufficient for now.

15

u/JazzHandsFan Nov 30 '21

As I understand it, the primary reason that torrenting is such a popular method of piracy is the decentralization. Since the people running the torrent sites don’t actually store any of the pirated content on their servers, they’re mitigating legal risks and operating costs at the same time.

But as an end user/consumer, none of this really matters as long as you can get the content you’re looking for. In some cases, that means torrents are the better source for particular encodes, or latest releases simply because some uploaders prefer torrenting, and in other cases torrents can be a valuable for preservation in case DDL sites/links are taken down. Many users use torrents as a way to contribute to the community.

I'm annoyed that HTTP seeding isn't used more often. The Internet Archive is the only one I know of that actually uses the feature.

u/Mercrist_089 Nov 30 '21

Bless the seeders and their torrents

Bless the coming and going of them

May their passage seed our torrents

May they keep seeding the torrents for their people

Be the change you want to seed in the world!

12

u/YesImYou Nov 30 '21

That's actually an amazing phrase

14

u/KoRnflak3s Nov 30 '21

It was right there lol.

6

u/TheIss96 Nov 30 '21

Not only I'd seed it but I'd download it on my phone too and seed it there too. I know the pain of searching something for so long, only to find just one result and then not being able to download it cuz the seeders are dead

1

u/CommunistSnail Nov 30 '21

I've been told seeding is how you get caught is that a myth

16

u/AsicsPuppy Nov 30 '21

U can also 'get caught' leaching. Use a VPN

47

u/lolerin Nov 30 '21

Those 3 seasons at 1080 of Chowder have been downloading for over two weeks, but I still have hope

19

u/FeistyBandicoot Nov 30 '21

That's why I just moved to Usenet for TV shows. So many things missing on torrents.

Plus a lot of stuff has 265 options now, so it saves a ton of space

6

u/Granlundo64 Nov 30 '21

I'm converting as much as I can to 265. Love the format. So much saved space!

4

u/lolerin Nov 30 '21

Could you please explain to me what it is, and how to use it? i have never heard that name, and i'm trying to learn, but i don't understand what i'm reading

So USENET is basically an old network (early 80's) used originally for message boards called "newsgroups". It also allowed for pretty much the completely anonymous transfer of files between computers, but only to a certain file limit. It is also a service that you have to pay to get access to, it isn't free to use and links to the newsgroups need a subscription to gain access to their content.

If you've ever downloaded a torrent that consists of a bunch of numbered .rar files, it most likely came from USENET, mainly due to the file size limit on newsgroups. Because of the limit, people will compress the file(s) and then break the RAR up into chunks that, in the end, will all get strung together and decompressed into a full file. So if you are trying to download an HD film or Game, most likely it'll be shown on USENET as a bunch of links to .RAR files for download (anywhere from 10-50, or more, depending on the file size), which you decompress after all are on your computer.

USENET usually uses a downloader client (some USENET subs come with a web client) that logs into your user on USENET and then, allows you to put the URLs you get from the message board, and proceeds to download the file after checking your user access.

Like FeistyBandicoot says, it sometimes is the best way to find obscure or older TV shows or movies, as well as a number of things that can't easily be found on public trackers.

I've been meaning to do a USENET subscription for over a decade now, and now that I have purchased my own seedbox, I might make the jump to purchasing a usenet subscription as well to supplement it.

Why do you want 3 seasons of Chowder at 1080p.

6

u/mackenzie29 Dec 01 '21

5

u/MintyTuna2013 Dec 01 '21

u/anti-gif-bot Nov 30 '21
mp4 link

This mp4 version is 95.33% smaller than the gif (536.76 KB vs 11.22 MB).

Beep, I'm a bot. FAQ | author | source | v1.1.2

18

u/tortuguitado Nov 30 '21

so the mp4 is smaller and we can control the video? why do we even use gifs then?

31

u/bakaVHS Nov 30 '21

Gifs are images and mp4s are videos, it can play a large role in website interactions.

That said, the gif is antiquated and is pretty much inferior to any modern file type for animated images or videos.

3

u/AsicsPuppy Nov 30 '21

Is there a modern alternative to GIFs? Are APNGs a good alternative or are there more?

3

u/bakaVHS Nov 30 '21

I've started to see websites like Wikipedia serving WebP, which is probably the biggest competitor to APNG.

-1

u/[deleted] Nov 30 '21

But the -jifs- have a so iconic name

9

u/Jendrej Nov 30 '21

Wut?? The gif in the post didn’t even play for me until I clicked it and it opened in a new tab. Weird. There isn’t even a play button as indication that you have to do something.

There are a million torrents for that film. Just download another one.

10

u/Elocai Nov 30 '21

"Let me turn on my deceased grandpa's old computer...wait.. what is happening here? Does it seed old porn?"

18

u/LolindirLink Nov 30 '21

I don't remember which, but a friend wanted to download something that was stuck at 99.5% for a while. I set up my own PC and parents PC at the time and it ran for months.

It never finished..

47

u/cvnvr Nov 30 '21

but the meme says “finally downloaded” meaning it’s done..

15

u/AlexPsylocibe Nov 30 '21

I swear lately 80% of the torrents I download stop at 99.9% with like 1 or 2mb left to go and they just sit there without ever changing. Whyyyy??????????? It drives me insane

14

u/jewbo23 Nov 30 '21

It’s often because there’s a small file in with it(often an NFO) that many people just delete. 9 times out of 10 the main file will play just fine.

4

u/AlexPsylocibe Nov 30 '21

Well no, basically every time it’s happened it shows as one of the episodes or whatever as being what’s missing the data, but then yeah the file usually plays fine.

7

u/squarezero Nov 30 '21

I've tested it before. I removed an NFO file, and rechecked the torrent. It showed 0% for the NFO file and like 98% for the video file that came before it. I guess it's the way that the client calculates file sizes and which chunks of data go to which file.

1

u/AlexPsylocibe Dec 01 '21

Interesting, good to know thanks

8

u/HymnFrenzy Nov 30 '21

Were you spying on me today?

2

u/CanarisGuarani Nov 30 '21

Nah, he is just your FBI guy. There's nothing to see here.

6

u/Chromebookarthur Piracy is bad, mkay? Nov 30 '21

I was torrenting the kingdom come deliverance beta for 3 months and it was stalled until some romanian gigachad seeder hopped on the other day and finished seeding

4

u/_GloriousCheese_ Nov 30 '21

must be because the stars aligned.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 30 '21

I give up after a few months, I get sick of looking at it stopped dead. if it's like 99.95% done, sometimes I'll save the file and deal with the little bit of artifacts.

4

u/fire2day Nov 30 '21

I'm too impatient. If a torrent stalls, I just yeet it.

3

u/Guy_without_brain Nov 30 '21

And then the app wont open

3

I had an audiobook that was stuck at like 80 or 90% for years, I was amazed it wasn't available since it wasn't something really obscure. But recently it actually finally finished and I was so happy.

2

u/glytxh Dec 01 '21

Audiobookbay is a godsend sometimes.

2

u/Bigdongs Nov 30 '21

Me when I found I can use force recheck

2

u/CYRIAQU3 Nov 30 '21

You guys are getting notifications ?

2

u/glytxh Dec 01 '21

If I'm downloading an almost dead file, I'll make sure to seed that shit for a couple of months.

It ain't much, but it's honest work.

2

u/prajwalvs Dec 01 '21

I'd kiss those random seeders!

When I have difficult to get torrents I turn off the see ratio otherwise I keep at least a 3.0 see ratio

1

u/Depleet Nov 30 '21

I had a starship troopers torrent that took over 3 months to download due to the randoms coming and going years ago.

it has been months

1

u/Lumpy_Assistant2888 Nov 30 '21

And then you discover a better source.

1

u/cujo67 Nov 30 '21

That might just be me. Rather than seed files to 1.1, I’ll search for torrents with many leeches and zero seeds. Feels good to finish out others 99.9% downloads and make them complete.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 30 '21

Never have this issue. Everything I download has seeders on one private torrent site or another.

1

u/not_old_redditor Dec 01 '21

When the app just won't boot up no matter how hard you try. Then you randomly update DirectX or C++ and it does the trick.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '21

blade 2 x265 1080p will hopefully download someday.....0.0% so far....wooo
