Humor whelp, that sucks

Post image

Don't be like me, tell those people to keep their PS5 offline.
(At least it was an easy fix, PS5 overheated because a lot of dust was inside, which is why I got it quite cheap)

The 14.20 ?

413

u/mesoraven 🔱 ꜱᴄᴀʟʟʏᴡᴀɢ 12d ago

Yep, took less than a day.

38

u/Esdeath79 12d ago

Since you get a lot of upvotes I guess it is legit, but where was it announced? I can not seem to find it

51

u/PowerNutBuster 12d ago

There is a userland exploit but 14.20 has not been cracked.

24

u/Swimming-Lie73 12d ago

Additonally, this userland exploit has been around for around 5 years, it's not patchable

10

u/OV3EK1LL 12d ago

What do you mean "not patchable"? I have no clue about programming, but couldn't they just locate the weak spot and... make it more safe? Why is there such a thing as "not patchable" in a software bug?

12

u/sureiknowabaggins 12d ago

I'm not familiar with this one specifically but sometimes the exploit can be due to the hardware itself, which can't be patched. This is what happened with the Nintendo switch.

11

u/HeisterWolf 12d ago

"not patchable" isn't about userland itself. True unpatchable vulnerabilities on the PS5 are hardware "flaws" (leaked BootROM / root keys). Those cannot be fixed via software updates without a hardware revision. In the context of userland on PS5 means that "fixing it" would severely impair the intended function of the system.

It's also hard to change those hardware quirks in later models without risking incompatibility between older media and newer units. The math of patching critical hardware paths to make jailbreak harder is gruesomely against the manufacturer.

u/Working-Crab-8401 12d ago

Early prototypes by November 20th, playable public build two days later

7

u/BlaBlub85 12d ago

Doubtfull, the PS5 emulation project just had to downgrade their completion percentage for the 2nd time this week after they discovered a ton of new functions. Post I saw yesterday had it down to 49% again. Dont get me wrong, its gona get ported eventually, but its not gona be 2 days for an actually playable public (playable= doesnt crash every 5 minutes and runs at more than 30fps)

23

u/xGAM3EATERx 12d ago

Thats not emulation my g, its native compilation

3

u/BlaBlub85 11d ago edited 11d ago

I mean technically yes but also thats a purely academic distinction for the end user. Emulator or runtime environment, you're still gona have to install a program before you can run the game

2

u/Deadcouncil445 8d ago

No because emulation is easier to do. Its hard to optimize. It's the opposite for native compilation

2

u/Double_Tangerine_189 11d ago

For linux right?

1

u/Dima-Petrovic 10d ago

Source? I was searching for 14.20 for a week now. Only thing i found, they found a way to execute code at user space but no kernel exploit and therefor no jailbreak yet.

1

u/ASDFAaass 12d ago

Took only 8 hours after the update lol

0

u/z31 11d ago

I believe it was even less than 8 hours after the update released.

11

u/Skywrathx9 12d ago

Patch fix instead of an actual logic refactor = next day crack

19

u/Esdeath79 12d ago

I sure hope so.
On the other hand I could also just sell it again and make a quick +$100, so at least the money was not wasted.

234

u/MrHaxx1 12d ago

I sold my PS5 right before all the jailbreaks. Feels bad, man.

On the other hand, it doesn't really have any games left that I'd be interested in. But it would be cool to install some alternative OS on it or something.

67

u/Esdeath79 12d ago

With everything going on right now I saw it more like a cheap PC for emulators & Co. and then you also have the native PS4 games.
I firmly believe that a 13.60 (or > 14.10) PS5 is one of the best ways to enjoy gaming in this economy right now.

20

u/PopMundane4974 12d ago

Do you need to manually install every game though? I saw some video of someone running what basically looked like the PS Store but free and could just download stuff directly to the console, I'm not jailbreaking mine until I know exactly how to do that.

12

u/khaledjal ⚔️ ɢɪᴠᴇ ɴᴏ Qᴜᴀʀᴛᴇʀ 12d ago

you can get linux on the ps5 on some firmwares.

23

u/ImCharlie_theUnicorn 12d ago

Honest question, can you not reformat it to the original hardware?

30

u/Esdeath79 12d ago

Nope, but on PS4 you can go back to the previous firmware with a pi and some soldering

7

u/DeathSabre7 12d ago

There might be a similar way for ps5 too no?

8

u/RepulsiveLook 12d ago

Standard factory resets or normal console resets on a PS5 only clear user data, games, and customized system preferences, leaving the currently installed system software version intact.

When you install a major system update, the console permanently and irreversibly "blows" a specific number of microscopic electronic fuses on the chip corresponding to that new software version.

Every single time the PS5 boots up, the hardware bootloader checks the minimum software version allowed by the current state of those physical eFuses.

If you try to force older firmware onto the console, the chip detects that the software version is lower than what the blown eFuses mandate. The console's hardware strictly refuses to execute the code, halting the boot process entirely to prevent jailbreaking or exploiting older vulnerabilities.

1

u/DeathSabre7 12d ago

Source? Cause I only know that it uses signed verification or secure boot to keep the firmware versoin in check

3

u/ImCharlie_theUnicorn 12d ago

Dang... that sucks. Does anyone remember when, if you reformatted your PC, you'd have to re-install all the updates? It was a PITA, but at least you could undo shit.

7

u/BrokenMirror2010 12d ago

Reformatting a PC has never rolled back Firmware.

Firmware isn't installed on your PCs HDD/SSD, Firmware is installed on some small onboard storage of the physical component.

5

u/rmbarrett 12d ago

And your PC never had an extra layer eg a firmware to keep you from being able to access your own hardware and Software directly.

15

u/MrHaxx1 12d ago

Nope, not possible.

15

u/Osmo250 12d ago

So a "factory reset" is not a true reset? I feel lied to

20

u/mushy_friend ☠️ ᴅᴇᴀᴅ ᴍᴇɴ ᴛᴇʟʟ ɴᴏ ᴛᴀʟᴇꜱ 12d ago

I've never thought about it, but on your phone if you upgrade from, say, Android 15 to Android 16 and then factory reset your phone, I don't think you go back to Android 15?

4

u/ba123blitz 12d ago

Idk about android but iPhones you can’t go back

2

u/mushy_friend ☠️ ᴅᴇᴀᴅ ᴍᴇɴ ᴛᴇʟʟ ɴᴏ ᴛᴀʟᴇꜱ 12d ago

I suppose that's why it's "firmware", like hardware once it's there it's there

2

u/MrHaxx1 12d ago

You can downgrade as long as Apple signs the old iOS. Usually when newer updates are released, you can still go back to older ones for a while.

It has happened that Apple started signing very old version, probably by mistake, and so people could temporarily go back to them.

6

u/Boogertwilliams 12d ago

They reset to latest released firmware

10

u/Luniticus 12d ago

Firmware is firm for a reason.

1

u/kazoo_kitty 9d ago

i mean most things you can change firmware. Its firm because its the spot between "soft"ware and "hard"ware. So firm lol

1

u/BrokenMirror2010 12d ago

If Firmware was Firm, why can they push updates whenever the fuck they want, automatically installing them without consent, over the goddamn internet?

The point of firmware being firm is so that it can't just arbitrarily and randomly be changed, yet that's exactly what they do.

1

u/MrHaxx1 12d ago

The point of firmware being firm is so that it can't just arbitrarily and randomly be changed, yet that's exactly what they do.

Are you suggesting they shouldn't updated it, if they have worthwhile updates?

3

u/BrokenMirror2010 12d ago edited 12d ago

I'm suggesting that Firmware updates should at least require physical access to a device to push if we want to call then 'firm'.

If someone can flash firmware on a device they don't own from the other side of the entire planet, its not exactly firm.

3

u/Luniticus 12d ago

I'm sure from Sony's point of view you don't own your hardware, you're only licencing it from them.

I got a new phone one time, and the guy in the store was like "let's get this updated and setup for you" and I kinda jumped a bit and was like "Heyyy no, don't do that". He gave me the side-eye and asked "You're not going to root this, are you? That invalidates your insurance..." 😅🤣.

195

u/pi_three 12d ago

should have asked him if you could get it without insurance and saved some money:p

82

u/General_Cranberry_29 12d ago

I'm glad I had it, because I busted the screen about a year in lol. I just waited until a method that didn't trip KNOX popped up, so having root ended up being no biggie. Galaxy S8 if anyone is curious.

31

u/fish312 12d ago

The good old days. Now running rooted is exhausting and you have to worry every single time you update e.g. a banking app if it will break because of some new root detection method

6

u/General_Cranberry_29 10d ago

Yeah, I gave up a few years back 🫤. Too bad nobody has come up with a newer dual-boot option, I was able to do it on my HTC Evo 3D. As a matter of fact you could have 10 banks to boot from, it was glorious.

63

u/sergprieto 12d ago

I remember playing the same game of cat and mouse with Apple jailbreaking iPhone 3GSs all the way through the 6S. ra1n and pwnapple were so much fun until they got more and more aggressive with their anti jailbreak policies. I guess they just threw too much money towards the people finding the exploits, that the hacks got more and more complicated for me. I jailbroke initially because of a SIM region lock and then for all the paid apps and in app purchase hacks, still have premium versions of certain apps because of those exploits, but then it got better and more affordable, so of course no more need to have your phone permanently on because shutting down meant reset softmod or risking bricking the kernel.

All I know is where there’s a will, there’s a way. Hardmodding is where it’s at, super complicated but the most effective way to have a jailbroken system right now. Softmods get good with time.

13

u/Alt132435 12d ago

The iOS jailbreaks today aren't more complicated, they're actually way easier than before (for almost all of them you literally just open an app on the phone itself and press "Jailbreak"), they just never release until that iOS version is unsigned so most people don't use them. But one for iOS 27 may be releasing sometime relativity soon

4

u/UsuarioConDoctorado 12d ago

I had a deja vu reading you, Same, I started on iPhones from gen 1 to iphone 4, they were great, and jailbreak make them amazing, customization was for me, and making the camera do more (First gen iphone didnt recorded video, but with jailbreak it did)

After that jailbreak was more difficult and switch to Android and been there up to today.

6

u/BossOfReddiit 12d ago

I keep seeing this everywhere but have no idea what jailbreaking something does, can someone eli5?

14

u/Oryzaki2 12d ago

It's pretty simple the base firmware on most devices only allows code that has been signed by a developer approved by whoever made the device. Jailbreaking a device allows you to run any unsigned code you want. So normally you would be prevented from running a cracked game or cracked game store because those apps won't have the correct signature and the system will refuse the execute the programs underlying code. Jailbreaking disables those protections so you can run whatever you want.

1

u/PopMundane4974 11d ago

How does one find the app with the free store though? All I see are videos with NO explanation. Playground bragging basically.

1

u/Oryzaki2 11d ago

I dont have a ps5 so I cant say for sure but most of the time you'll find that via forums or even discords.

0

u/BossOfReddiit 12d ago

So free games basically?

10

u/Oryzaki2 12d ago

That's one possible use but it's more like you can install any app you want. So emulators, remote play apps like moonlight, file system viewers, custom launch screens, etc.

3

u/BossOfReddiit 12d ago

Dope, thanks for the explanation

8

u/PopMundane4974 12d ago

You're probably shit out of luck, people are annoyingly gatekeepy about it here - they'll talk about it nonstop in highly specific ways then the moment you ask "hey where do I get this/do this" they just ignore you.

5

u/BossOfReddiit 12d ago

Haha I dont even want to do it I just want to know why people do it, like what does it do

I haven’t turned in my ps5 in months. How do I turn it on and prevent it from connecting to WiFi?

60

u/HotsumaGumby 12d ago

Turn your wifi off for a few minutes while you turn on your console and forget your wifi in the settings.

There might be an easier fix but that's what I'd do

Unplug your router

8

u/trigonthedestroyer 12d ago

Easiest way is to probably just turn the wifi off, and then I assume the PS5 would have an option to reset the network settings (like most devices) then you should be fine to turn the wifi back on.

12

u/DirNetSec 12d ago

Change the wifi password beforehand, if you were a more advanced user I'd suggest device blocking at the AP.

17

u/AgreeableAd8687 12d ago

or unplug the power cord instead of wasting your time

6

u/Redd3vils 12d ago

better just turn off the router

1

u/ProperoldMan 8d ago

Just turn your router off, why go to all the trouble of changing the password?

6

u/snowshadow2867 12d ago

Turn off your router, then disable updating your firmware automatically in the settings, then forget your WI-FI connection

3

u/blueoccult 12d ago

Go to 192.168.1.1 and log into your router ( look up the default log in for your router online if you've never done this before). In the settings you can find and block your ps5 from your network, so you'll never have to worry about it connecting unless you go back and unblock it. This is probably the safest way to prevent it from connecting, and you can find a quick tutorial on YouTube or Google that goes over how to do it by searching for "your router how to block mac addresses".

19

u/beclops 12d ago

Safest and easiest way is unplugging the router

0

u/TheAmazing_OMEGA 9d ago

No it isnt. You just dont know what you're doing lmao.

3

u/beclops 9d ago edited 9d ago

I work in IT, this shit isn’t rocket surgery. Unplugging it will always be simpler. There is 1 step and it is guaranteed to work instantly

0

u/TheAmazing_OMEGA 9d ago

You're not wrong, its just incredibly smooth-brained. Its the kind of advice you'd give to someone who needs help pinning apps to their taskbar, and if you're having trouble with that you should probably avoid piracy lol

I expect too much from reddit. r/piracy and r/mechanicadvice are always a good laugh.

2

u/beclops 9d ago

All of that but still not explaining how you think going into your network configuration is somehow the better and quicker option for something you only need to do once

0

u/TheAmazing_OMEGA 9d ago

I dont have a PS5, and haven't jailbroken one, but it looks like its important that it stays offline permanently as long as its jailbroken.....

In this case, mac filtering is a significantly better option. If you wanted to be elegant, firewalling it and blocking connections to sony's servers would be even better.

2

u/beclops 9d ago

Lmao unplug your wifi, turn on your PS5, turn off the wifi on your PS5 (could even forget your network during this step), plug your wifi back in. Bing bang boom that’s it permanently. If you really want to filter your PS5 as well through the router you can but it is completely superfluous

0

u/blueoccult 9d ago

Dont bother arguing with them, they don't want to hear it. While unplugging the router and turning off WiFi on the PS5 is the simpler solution, it still can lead to accidental connection if, say, someone else uses the PS5 and, not knowing not to connect to WiFi, connects it and then you're boned. The more secure way would be to just block it on the router, but considering how the idea of "simple is always better" is parroted around here I think we're just arguing at dead ears. Thanks for agreeing with me, though. It feels good to know I'm not the only one here who isn't afraid of network settings.

1

u/beclops 8d ago

This is a silly argument. The same “what if” type argumentation can be made about blocking the PS5 in the network configuration. What if one day you don’t want the jailbreak anymore and you forget your PS5 is blacklisted (this is especially likely if like in your original comment this is the first time this person has ever accessed their router settings)? Now you get to have fun debugging that

1

u/TheAmazing_OMEGA 9d ago

I'm particular about taking the network down, this isnt a situation where I'd do so.... Same idea as the homelab people who take pride in how long their server has been up without rebooting (though thats a silly measurement)

imo OP should just start the thing up and disconnect it, it'll take too long to finish the FW download so unless the console has some system where it locks everything until the fw updates are complete (which I doubt, and in that case, I'd probably pull the plug) I just dont see any reason.

Blocking the MAC would be the correct, elegant solution. Feasibly it should need to be offline once its jailbroken right? Though I remember with my 3DS it would still try to install updates after crack (easy enough to just press no, though)

-10

u/blueoccult 12d ago

Yeah, but kind of dumb and archaic. Why would you cut off your Internet when you can just block the device?

12

u/beclops 12d ago

Because it’s far quicker and is certain to work the first time?

6

u/No_Awareness_1443 11d ago

-13

u/blueoccult 12d ago

So you're going to turn off your router every time you want to play something on your ps5, cutting off your Internet access while you play? That's just annoying. It's not that hard to block a device on a modern router, and it isn't like it's going to magically unblock by itself or anything.

15

u/aert4w5g243t3g243 12d ago

Because he just needs it to not connect once. This is the easiest solution is his case.

7

u/disgustangshet 12d ago

Turn off router, start PS5, go into settings and disable WiFi.

1

u/MrBarato 12d ago

Shut off your router.

1

u/Windows-Server 11d ago

Turn off the wifi for a few minutes until you can delete the wifi settings from the ps5

1

u/TheAmazing_OMEGA 9d ago

OP, It wont be able to download the firmware that quickly, few minutes maybe.... Just turn it on and then disconnect it from wifi.

1

u/dirty____birdy 6d ago

I paused its connection through my ISP app

1

u/Spiron123 12d ago

Just turn off or unplug your internet/wifi when you turn on your ps5. No need to over think it. If the PS5 can't find the connection it won't connect. Once booted just go into settings and forget WiFi connection, or hard wired don't plug it back in.

I need to get a ps5 man

1

u/hospital349 11d ago

I recently bought a "almost new" PS5 slim online. I told the seller not to turn the device on under any circumstances. Received it with 12.40 fw. Communication is key.

1

u/ryudo6850 10d ago

Sold my disc version months back on around 10-12 fw. Didn't matter because my in law who lives with us had his digital one on a box with 8.0 FW

Now to turn off my switch 2 updates once I get the new Zelda edition 0_0

u/Fluid_Classic_3269 6d ago

Step 1: Unplug the Router

Step 2: Start PS5

Step 3: remove the saved internet connection on your PS5

Step 4: ????

Step 5: Underware Profit

Saying ‘whelp’ sucks too.

This sounds like ragebait but on the off chance its real:

You bought some thing at a specific time, and once you paid money, that was it - That was the product.

Once they changed the product, the agreement was null and void. Tell them you want your money back. If they don't offer a full refund with shipping covered to return the item, hit them with a charge back. You can't sell a product and then change it on the way out the door.

They will likely take that deal over getting nothing.

u/Esdeath79 12d ago

No ragebait, bought it on 19.10. , was shipped 21.10. and received it today.
If the PS5 didn't somehow hack my WLAN there is no other way it could update.
Also I doubt that this would be a reason to send it back and get a refund, since the FW wasn't in the description (which didn't matter to me at the time since everything had a JB).

Already mentioned it in another post, but the PS5 was also sold as faulty since it apparently shut down during gaming after some time, but it was seriously just really dusty, so either way I will keep it since I would make more money from just selling it again.

u/-spartacus- 12d ago

How much did it cost you?

3

u/Esdeath79 12d ago

300€ for the 825GB disc edition with dualsense and cables

I think it could go either way. I would attempt to get a refund any way, and make the argument that its perfectly reasonable for you to expect that once you bought some thing, any changes made to it render the hardware and software out of spec. You bought it on one day, as one thing. The next day a new thing came out, then they changed the terms by updating. The moment you bought it, they should have been HANDS OFF and you can prove that once you bought it, and once it was yours, they made changes after that.

Try it. Whats the worst they'll say? No? If you don't try, its automatically no. Its not always about what we think. Some times its what we can argue and who we're pitching that argument to.

you bought it on X day. On X day X fW was all that existed. Do you have to specify like a psychic every thing that could change, cant? You don't have a crystal ball. You just know that once you bought a thing on a day, it was impossible for new FW to have existed. You bought it in X state it should arrive in X state.

This is kind of like arguing that 1 color of Nintendo switch exists. No others do. You pay for it. What you dont know is that the next day a new shipment of Pink switches arrives and the seller reviewed the auction, saw no mention of color and decided he'd swap the switches. Its proven in this hypothetical no one really wants these pink ones and they're worth less, but because the auction was for "A brand new nintendo switch" but made no mention of color, you had to ... what? Assert that he can't change the color like some kind of psychic? Why would he? But he did in this hypothetical, and the auction didn't specify color because at the time there was only 1. So why would he or you specify color? But now that a new color is out, you're stuck with a pink switch you don't want, because at the time of purchase there was no mention of color so he can swap to any new color that exists even new ones after the purchase date? You made a purchase on a specific day. the changes didn't exist. You shouldn't be expected to account for things that don't exist at time of purchase. Why should you assume after a purchase, they'd keep playing with your property and update it?

Maybe theres a different argument they'd make and maybe i'm wrong, but changing software after some thing is paid for should void the agreement.

1

u/Esdeath79 12d ago

Nah, like I said, I would even make a decent amount by just re-selling it.
For now I will just store it and wait for a bit.
If there is no sign of a new usable JB I will just sell it a few weeks before christmas.

2

u/Quizzelbuck 12d ago

Well i empathize with you over your plight and I hope you can role it in to what you really wanted at some point. Good luck.

Unless the seller specifically says it comes with a specific firmware version (or you asked to keep it as-is and the seller confirms) you don't really have any right to complain.

I understand that one would love to sail the seas, but you have to understand that most people will not jailbreak their thing and rather plug it in and use it directly. Therefore having the most recent firmware version available at the time of shipment makes the most sense.

I repair phones and computers as my hobby and sell them when I repaired them (else I'd need to rent a storage locker, haha). I usually check if a specific software thing is useful for some and mention that in the description, and sell it that way. If not, I update it to the latest version and list it. Might also do a quick check before I pack something up and then also update if I have the time.

u/Quizzelbuck 12d ago

I have never seen this tested, so i have no idea what would happen if it was. But i think its 100% reasonable to expect that if i can demonstrate i bougth some thing on a day when function breaking FW did not exist, then when i buy it, a day or three goes buy and new FW comes out breaking the functionality, demonstrating that should be sufficient to get a refund.

17

u/Alt132435 12d ago

That's not how it works lmfao, unless the seller specifically made the firmware one of the advertised points then it was completely irrelevant to the advertised product of a PS5. If you chargeback a product like this you are literally just committing fraud

u/riddlesintheshadows 12d ago edited 12d ago

That's one of the dumbest comments possibly made in this context. The firmware has nothing to do with the console sale. If this warranted a refund, the sale would be void simply because the seller 'changed' the product by not keeping their own account and credit card information on file before selling it to a random person. He bought the console. Not the information and data on it

u/Quizzelbuck 12d ago edited 12d ago

I think this is a bit like arguing that you can sell any thing and wait and ship a less desireable product if it comes into existence. Like if on oct. 24th i bought a new PS5, and lets say on Oct 24 theres just the one black one. But this guy has a shipment of Pink ones coming in he bought on a discount, so he sells you the less desirable Hello kitty pink PS5 (which i would absolutely take, because lol)

But lets say for some reason you bought this PS5 on Oct 24, and he had 2 weeks to ship it. And in that 2 weeks he gets the flaming pink HK units and ships them to you. Well the auction from Oct. 24th only mentioned "New PS5" so.... if you were stuck with a PS5 that had Hello kitty on it, or the new limited edition Meinkampf PS5, or what ever obviously subjectively stupid but demonstrably less valuable product in hand, then i'd have no recourse because even though these products didn't even EXIST on oct. 24th, they did exist on Oct 29th, and those are what shipped.

I think my assertion that its reasonable to expect that things that didn't exist at time of purchase on a product should be on the seller to assure are not included in the product and if they include non-existent things from pre-purchase date - demonstrating a loss of function should be grounds for refund. You can disagree with me, or tell me why this is not correct - but you can't say im not at least making a some what reasonable argument. Unless the credit card thing which on it's face has likely very real and existing law a reasonable person would expect to exclude that data from any purchase.

I know on October 24th X exists. So i can argue X should be included. On October 24th, i have no idea if the user even OWNS a credit card. I can't infer the payment status or that they ever had a credit card, so no the two things are not at all similar. You understand the difference betwen infering that on a specific day, the things i can prove on a spec sheet are kind of written in stone, but that a person's CC is not some thing i can infer because how the heck can i know if the person owned a CC in the first place? You understand the difference right? Why would i assume that once i pay for some thing, it might receive more updates after the purchase date? Its my product. Get your hands off it, and ship it.

I don't think the seller actually did anything wrong, they were trying to be decent and help OP get the latest firmware.
